La Storia non è solo quella che si studia sui libri di scuola. E’ storia tutto ciò che ha contribuito al nostro sviluppo sociologico e che ha segnato gli eventi culturali. Ogni contesto storico è stato accompagnato dalla musica, colonna sonora che ha “battuto il tempo” e raccontato in modo indelebile la storia, fissandola a colpi di note nella nostra memoria. Nasce così la rubrica “33 giri di ricordi”, la musica che ha fatto la storia. Proseguono gli appuntamenti con i 33 giri di ricordi, quelli che hanno segnato un’epoca: oggi parliamo del capolavoro assoluto dei Supertramp, “Breakfast in America”. 1979 Iran: dopo mesi di proteste popolari, lo Shāh Mohammad Reza Pahlavi lascia il paese. Even in the Quietest Moments… Dividendo il tempo tra il Colorado e la California, la band inglese ha trascorso oltreoceano gli ultimi cinque anni, e realizzato due dischi: una full immersion nella realtà “Made in USA”, che volente o nolente, influenzerà tutto il nuovo album. Parecchi critici musicali, hanno individuato nei testi una satira, a volte pesante, verso la cultura americana, anche se la band ha sempre negato questa circostanza. Dirà Roger Hodgson al riguardo: “Scegliemmo quel titolo perché era divertente. Era appropriato all’animo divertente dell’album“. Satira o divertimento che sia, ci troviamo davanti, ad uno dei pochi, veri “masterpiece” della storia della musica contemporanea; un album senza tempo, etichettato forse frettolosamente come “art rock”, che racchiude le anime dei due autori principali, lo stesso Roger Hodgson, e Rick Davies, una progr, l’altra pop. “Breakfast in America” può tranquillamente considerarsi un disco progressive, alla portata di tutti: suoni aperti e caldi, arrangiamenti raffinati, voci gioiose e soprattutto il suono del piano elettrico Wurlitzer, che si rivelerà un vero e proprio marchio di fabbrica. Nove mesi di gestazione, missaggi fatti e rifatti, demo su demo, e litigi di vario genere, sono serviti per partorire un album stellare: dieci tracce di altissimo livello, quattro singoli estratti, milioni di copie vendute. L’immagine mostra l’attrice Kate Murtagh, nei panni di una cameriera chiamata “Libby”, nella caratteristica posa della Statua della Libertà, che regge con una mano un piattino con un bicchiere di succo d’arancia (al posto della torcia della statua), e con l’altra mano un menù pieghevole del ristorante su cui è scritto “Breakfast in America”. Sullo sfondo si vede una città composta da una scatola di cornflake, posacenere, posate (per i pontili), tazzine da caffè, cassette per le uova, aceto, ketchup e bottiglie di senape, tutte con vernice bianca. Le torri gemelle del World Trade Center sono disegnate come due pile di scatole e il piatto della colazione rappresenta Battery Park, il terminal di partenza dello Staten Island Ferry. La foto posteriore, raffigura i membri della band mentre fanno colazione e leggono i rispettivi giornali (inglesi), ed è stata scattata in un ristorante chiamato Bert’s Mad House. La copertina di “Breakfast in america” dei Supertramp Almost true Ma c’è di più, e questa teoria farebbe la felicità di Carlo Lucarelli. La copertina dell’album, preconizzerebbe l’attacco alle Torri Gemelle, ben 22 anni prima. Se si posiziona l’album dabvanti ad uno specchio (pratica davvero usuale…) si può notare “chiaramente” che la U e la P di Supertramp, nascoste dietro il disegno delle torri, diventano la tragica data dell’11/9, mentre il bicchiere di succo d’arancia, diventerebbe la palla di fuoco che attraversa le torri stesse. Dieci tracce, tutte da ascoltare, dove, a parte la maestria dei due fondatori, Rick Davies e Roger Hodgson, che si dividono equamente pianoforte, chitarre e voci, è da segnalare la prova superba di John Helliwell, mai abbastanza celebrato, polistrumentista e fiatista sopraffino, il vero “collante” tra i membri della band, e una sezione ritmica da paura, ovvero Dougie Thomson al basso e Bob Siebenberg alla batteria, capaci come pochi di scandire ritmi e battute, anche nei giri più complicati. Canzoni come la title track, piuttosto che “The logical song”, o “Child of vision” (riconoscibile fin dal primo accordo di piano), sono entrate a far parte della storia della musica, e non c’è film, ambientato in quegli anni, che sistematicamente non ne proponga qualcuna, come soundtrack. Giochi di voce, armonie tra il melodico e il progressive, lunghe, ma compatibili col contesto “canzone”, digressioni strumentali: quando si dice, la ricetta vincente. …famous last words… Gli anni ’80 sono ormai alle porte, David Bowie ha già pubblicato “Heroes” facendo praticamente nascere la “New Wave”, e i tempi sono maturi per il cambiamento, e niente sarà più come prima. “Breakfast in America” dei Supertramp, rimane l’ultimo baluardo della musica pop intesa come tale, dove la parola “elettronica” risultava quasi una bestemmia. Livello comunque mai più raggiunto rispetto a “Brakfast in America”, che rappresenta la cima più alta mai toccata dalla band inglese. La cima più alta e insuperata. Třebaže jejich první album vyšlo už v roce 1970, na respekt hudebních kritiků si musela kapela nějaký ten rok počkat. Tehdy je zastínily jiné progresivní kapely jako Pink Floyd, The Who, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath – převážně tvrdší hudba. Jejich stylové směřování se dalo označit jako blue-eyed-soul. V českém prostředí by se jejich hudba nazývala bílý soul. Sestava Supertramp prošla personálními pro- měnami až se ustálila v sestavě Roger Hodgson (kytara, klavír, elektrické piano, zpěv) Rick Davies (elektrické piano, klavír, varhany, fou- kací harmonika, zpěv), John ní.
