PREVENTING DRUG-RELATED DEATHS AT MUSIC FESTIVALS: WHY THE “RAVE” ACT SHOULD BE AMENDED TO PROVIDE AN EXCEPTION FOR HARM REDUCTION SERVICES ROBIN MOHR INTRODUCTION Amid flashing lights and pulsing beats, nearly 100,000 electronic dance music fans attended Electric Zoo on New York’s Randall’s Island in August 2013.1 Unfortunately the party was cut short. Following the deaths of two young fans, the final day of the three-day music festival was can- celed at the request of city authorities.2 In separate incidents, Olivia Ro- tondo, a twenty-year-old University of New Hampshire student, and Jeffrey Russ, a twenty-three-year-old Syracuse University graduate,3 died after collapsing at Electric Zoo with high body temperatures.4 Toxicology results revealed that Ms.

  • European Identity: Symbols to Sport
) European identity: symbols to sport Commission of the European Communities Directorate-General for Information. Communication and Culture 6/87 Rue de Ia Loi 200- B-1049 Brussels March 1987 t is 30 years since the signature, in Rome on 25 March 1957, of the treaty which I is more or less the constitution of the European Community. The Community continues to strengthen its identity and to make progress towards one of its fundamental objectives: a Europe that is more united and closer to its people. Symbols and the gestures of sport can help. There is a clear need for steps to strengthen the Coriununity's identity. It will be remembered that in the last European elections in June 1984, only 60% of the electorate actually voted; many people felt little involvement and preferred to go fishing or whatever. Perhaps even more worrying is the fact that Europe and the European Parliament were often ignored in the election campaign. Some days after the elections, at Fontainebleau on 26 June 1984, the Heads of State or Government of the Coinmunity celebrated the success of their 'summit'. They had not only solved current problems but had laid the foundation for the Com munity of tomorrow. The aims: to initiate new common policies, to move forward with the political unification of the Old Continent and also to make its people more aware of the European Community. To give concrete expression to these grand designs, the participants at Fontaine bleau set up an 'ad hoc' committee on a People's Europe. This body was chaired by Pietro Adonnino, representing Bettino Craxi, the President of the Italian Council of Ministers.

  • 360° Deals: an Industry Reaction to the Devaluation of Recorded Music
360° DEALS: AN INDUSTRY REACTION TO THE DEVALUATION OF RECORDED MUSIC SARA KARUBIAN* I. INTRODUCTION In October of 2007, Radiohead released In Rainbows without a record label. The band’s contract with record company EMI had been fulfilled in 2003, and Radiohead did not bother finding a new deal as they began recording their seventh album.1 Radiohead then made the album available at www.inrainbows.com, where fans were instructed to “pay-what-you- want” for the digital download.2 Shortly after the album’s release, the band’s front man, Thom Yorke, said “I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one. And, yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say ‘F___ you’ to this decaying business model.”3 It was no surprise that Radiohead received critical acclaim for the artistic merits of the album,4 or that millions of fans found a way to acquire the music. Its financial success, however, was less predictable. Radiohead declined to release statistics related to its pay-what-you-want model, but a conservative estimate suggests that the band’s profits from this digital release exceeded six and a half million.5 Furthermore, when Radiohead contracted with iTunes and a distributor to sell the album on iTunes and in stores, its high sales pushed it to the top of traditional album charts6 in early * J.D. The venue industry’s scale and dynamism is enormous. Think opera houses and traditional concert halls are a stagnant, no-growth part of the economy? How’s this for a factoid: For the last two decades in the U.S. alone, an average of more than one opera house or concert hall a month has opened its doors for the first time, some of them costing hundreds of millions of dollar apiece. Add to that the countless smaller venues that house artists of every level and every genre, and the opportunity is obvious. Venue Contracts As we’ve seen in other parts of the music business, contracts are the glue that sets the rules for relationships between parties working together to achieve mutual success. And how the rules are written largely depends on the clout of the various parties.
