Presents Compiled and designed by the teachers of New Horizon Public School Festivals are very important. They make us forget our cultural and religious differences. They unite people and they come together for the sole purpose of celebration and happiness. Other than that, festivals also help us embrace our culture and religion. They are very helpful in breaking the monotony of life. FESTIVALS WE CELEBRATE India is a country of colours and festivals. It is said that there are seven days in a week but nine festivals. They mark the grand and happy occasions in the life of Indian People. Great preparations are made well in advance to observe festivals. These are the occasions of family gatherings, exchange of greeting and sweets. Festivals come round the year and add colour , joy, happiness, variety and spice to life. INDIAN FESTIVALS FESTIVALS ARE VERY IMPORTANT. THEY MAKE US FORGET OUR CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES. THEY UNITE PEOPLE WHO COME TOGETHER FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF CELEBRATION AND HAPPINESS. OTHER THAN THAT, FESTIVALS ALSO HELP US EMBRACE OUR CULTURE AND RELIGION. THEY ARE VERY HELPFUL IN BREAKING THE MONOTONY OF LIFE IN INDIA THERE ARE MORE THAN THOUSANDS OF FESTIVALS CELEBRATED BUT APPROXIMATELY 33 TO 35 FESTIVALS ARE POPULAR IN INDIA. TYPES OF INDIAN FESTIVALS NATIONAL FESTIVALS RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS National Festivals include : • Republic Day • Independence Day Popular Religious festivals in India include Ramadan Onam Krishna Holi Janmashtmi Raksha Diwali Bandhan Christmas Durga Puja Dussehra Easter Ganesh Chatuthi Ram Navami Navratri Mahavir Jayanti Sankranti is celebrated in almost all parts of India with distinct names. Here are some examples. Rites, Rituals, Festivals and the Pilgrimage of Baladevjew Cult in Odisha
Abstract: The Baladev cult of Odisha also known as Balaram and Balabhadra bears a special identity in the annals of religious history of Odisha. Cults are studied here in the context of a particular ritualized tradition, colouring the faiths and beliefs of a particular people. Rites, rituals and festivals play a major role in the life of every person, irrespective of religious affiliations. Therefore, it has a greater role in Baladevjew temples of Odisha. However, this is more prominent in the case of the Hindus. Right from the time of conception and birth, up to a person’s passing away and even after it, rites and rituals follow a Hindu at all times, much like a shadow. Indeed, there is one or the other rite, ritual or custom that comes into play for Hindus three hundred and sixty five days of the year. However, unlike other religions where many customs are mandatory, the Hindu way of life is comparatively flexible, with people in different regions following a variety of customs and traditions in Odisha. The study of practices and rituals associated with the Baladev cult as well as the pilgrimage to Baladevjew, show that if the Jagannath worship was a royal cult that came to express Orissan identity and nationalism, the Baladeva cult can be seen as a sub cult of the Jagannath cult, visible in certain places in northern and western Odisha. LUHADIA JOINT DIRECT.OR OF CENSUS OPERATIONS RAJASTHAN FOREWORD Apart from the decennial enumeration of population the Indian Census is steeped . in the tradition of undertaking a variety of studies of topical in~erest. In fact, the publications brought out iO connection with the earlier censuses contained veritable mines of information on racial, cultural, linguistic and a number of other aspects of life of the people ot this country. With the advent of freedom, however, the scope and dimension of these special studies had to be restructured in a manner that would provide the basic feedbacks on the processes of development taking place in different spheres of life of the people especially under planned development. Thus, in connection with the 1961 Census, a massive programme was launched inter-alia to conduct socia-economic survey of about 500 villages selected from different parts of the country. The main objective of this study was to know the way of life of the people living in Indian villages which accounted for 82 per cent of the total population as per the 1961 Census. There was, however, an imperative need to extend the area of the study to urban centres as well, to provide a complete coverage of the people JiviQg"irf diverse socio-economic conditions. DICTIONARY INTRODUCTION Dictionary Introduction In a cramped Quito apartment in the late 1990s, the first draft of this dictionary, in Kechwa and Spanish, was written by my brother, Nematni Baltazar Masaquiza Ch. In the fall of 2004, with my beginning Kechwa students at Kansas University, and then with my Kechwa II students in the spring of 2005, we added many words and the English meanings to make it a tri-lingual Kechwa-Spanish-English dictionary. Kechwa is the most widely spoken indigenous language of the Americas. It is spoken today in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. There are dialectical differences between regions. Within Ecuador, where I grew up, one finds minor letter changes between regions. In one dialect people might say kanda instead of kanta; ufiana instead of uvyana; caca instead of q’aqa; maskana, instead of maxkana. Kechwa speakers and students will notice that I have not strictly followed the pronunciation and spelling conventions of Ecuadorian Unified Kechwa, but rather have applied vocabulary and conventions from Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Why did I do this? In part, I have taken advantage of a language that is not yet standardized— Ecuadorian Kechwa isn’t—to experiment in using other indigenous’ peoples’ letters. For example, Mayans and Aztec intellectuals have been reclaiming their own languages and using their original codices as guides. Borrowing words and letters from other language is happening all the time, but there is often a forced quality the way European languages and letters have come into indigenous languages. Why can’t Kechwa borrow letters from other indigenous cultures? Or words from cousin languages like Aymara? To reclaim ownership of our language, we need to re-assume authority over it.
