On behalf of our community, I would like to thank the outgoing members of the Executive Board and Advisory Committee for their contributions to Hindu Society of North East Florida. I would also like to welcome the new Executive Board and Advisory Committee members. With the community help and EB and AC leadership we hope to build on prior year successes and make 2017 another successful year. This year we will achieve an important milestone – 10th year of our temple at the current loca- tion. We want to thank the countless individuals whose contributions helped create HSNEF and built the temple as a place for us to congregate and offer worship. These 10 years have signifi- cantly increased the size of our congregation. In order to accommodate the increased size of the congregation we have embarked on a temple expansion plan. During the Annual General Body meeting conducted on November 12th, the temple expansion plans were presented and approved. The approved plan is included in this magazine. In 2017 one of the goals is to complete the park- ing lot expansion and the temple needs your financial support to achieve the goal. A big thank you to all the members that are working on the temple expansion plan. We have started implementing the new safety and security procedures during major religious events to enhance both the religious experience and the safety of the devotees. The response from the congregation has been highly complementary. We will continue to evaluate this policy after each major religious event and make adjustments as necessary. Thanks to the generosity of the community we raised close to $60,000 during the annual gala event that took place on December 3rd at UNF Robinson Theater. Others have done their part to raise funds as well. Mata Rani devotees raised over $10,000 and Navratri celebrations raised over $3,500. Eat for a good cause (EFGC), an effort started in 2015 to raise funds for a new kitchen, raised over $16,000 in 2016. A big thank you to everyone who is contributing to the success of HSNEF. Ripples, the youth volunteer organization started in 2015, successfully conducted a children’s day carnival on November 12th at the temple premises and raised over $4,000 for HSNEF. More im- portantly over 50 young adults volunteered at the event. These young adults are going to be the future of HSNEF. Thank you Team Ripples. Please renew your annual temple membership ($121) for 2017 or consider upgrading to a life member ($5000). Your support helps HSNEF provide the religious, social, educational and other services to the community. Please also consider supporting the temple expansion plan by sponsor- ing a brick for $1001. You can become a member and donate by going to the temple website www.hsnef.org, by calling the temple office at (904) 268-7630, or by visiting the temple. Member- ship and donation forms are included in this magazine. A list of life members, 2016 annual mem- bers and 2016 donors is included in this magazine. Thank you for your continued support of HSNEF. Please consider volunteering at the temple. We are always looking for individuals who can help with temple maintenance activities, parking and temple setup for major religious events and other activities. Please send an email with your availability and interest to [email protected]. Finally change is coming to our beloved Sandesh magazine. Starting from this issue, Sandesh is only going to be available online and can be found on the HSNEF website www.hsnef.org under Services. • Rites, Rituals, Festivals and the Pilgrimage of Baladevjew Cult in Odisha
Abstract: The Baladev cult of Odisha also known as Balaram and Balabhadra bears a special identity in the annals of religious history of Odisha. Cults are studied here in the context of a particular ritualized tradition, colouring the faiths and beliefs of a particular people. Rites, rituals and festivals play a major role in the life of every person, irrespective of religious affiliations. Therefore, it has a greater role in Baladevjew temples of Odisha. However, this is more prominent in the case of the Hindus. Right from the time of conception and birth, up to a person’s passing away and even after it, rites and rituals follow a Hindu at all times, much like a shadow. Indeed, there is one or the other rite, ritual or custom that comes into play for Hindus three hundred and sixty five days of the year. However, unlike other religions where many customs are mandatory, the Hindu way of life is comparatively flexible, with people in different regions following a variety of customs and traditions in Odisha. The study of practices and rituals associated with the Baladev cult as well as the pilgrimage to Baladevjew, show that if the Jagannath worship was a royal cult that came to express Orissan identity and nationalism, the Baladeva cult can be seen as a sub cult of the Jagannath cult, visible in certain places in northern and western Odisha. Key words: - Rites, Rituals, Ceremonies, Festivals, Identity and Nationalism, Culture & Tradition. hese ancient cities are like living symbols continual addition to the Puranic list. CENSUS OF INDIA 1971 SERIES 18 ..ARAJASTHAN PARTVI- B SPECIAL SURVEY REPORT ON SELECTED TOWNS 2. NATHDWARA S. R. LUHADIA JOINT DIRECT.OR OF CENSUS OPERATIONS RAJASTHAN FOREWORD Apart from the decennial enumeration of population the Indian Census is steeped . in the tradition of undertaking a variety of studies of topical in~erest. In fact, the publications brought out iO connection with the earlier censuses contained veritable mines of information on racial, cultural, linguistic and a number of other aspects of life of the people ot this country. With the advent of freedom, however, the scope and dimension of these special studies had to be restructured in a manner that would provide the basic feedbacks on the processes of development taking place in different spheres of life of the people especially under planned development. Thus, in connection with the 1961 Census, a massive programme was launched inter-alia to conduct socia-economic survey of about 500 villages selected from different parts of the country. The main objective of this study was to know the way of life of the people living in Indian villages which accounted for 82 per cent of the total population as per the 1961 Census. There was, however, an imperative need to extend the area of the study to urban centres as well, to provide a complete coverage of the people JiviQg"irf diverse socio-economic conditions. It was with this objective in view anc418rY studies on towns were launched as part of the social studies programme in connection with the 1971 Census. The programme of soclal studies taken up in connection with the 1971 Census, was continued without any major change at the 1981 Census as well.

  • Kechwadictionary.Pdf
DICTIONARY INTRODUCTION Dictionary Introduction In a cramped Quito apartment in the late 1990s, the first draft of this dictionary, in Kechwa and Spanish, was written by my brother, Nematni Baltazar Masaquiza Ch. In the fall of 2004, with my beginning Kechwa students at Kansas University, and then with my Kechwa II students in the spring of 2005, we added many words and the English meanings to make it a tri-lingual Kechwa-Spanish-English dictionary. Kechwa is the most widely spoken indigenous language of the Americas. It is spoken today in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. There are dialectical differences between regions. Within Ecuador, where I grew up, one finds minor letter changes between regions. In one dialect people might say kanda instead of kanta; ufiana instead of uvyana; caca instead of q’aqa; maskana, instead of maxkana. Kechwa speakers and students will notice that I have not strictly followed the pronunciation and spelling conventions of Ecuadorian Unified Kechwa, but rather have applied vocabulary and conventions from Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Why did I do this? In part, I have taken advantage of a language that is not yet standardized— Ecuadorian Kechwa isn’t—to experiment in using other indigenous’ peoples’ letters. For example, Mayans and Aztec intellectuals have been reclaiming their own languages and using their original codices as guides. Borrowing words and letters from other language is happening all the time, but there is often a forced quality the way European languages and letters have come into indigenous languages. Why can’t Kechwa borrow letters from other indigenous cultures? Or words from cousin languages like Aymara? To reclaim ownership of our language, we need to re-assume authority over it.
