Recent field trips to Lundayeh villages in these two districts have confirmed the group as rich in various forms of traditional dance music namely busak bunga, busak paku, alai sekafi and gong beats that serve a diverse range of purposes and functions in their daily life. Different types of traditional dance music are produced by a variety of traditional musical instruments. This preliminary study intends to explore and analyse the intricacies of Lundayeh traditional musical instruments found in Tenom and Sipitang, the aspects of the community's musical instruments and their functions, and the music transcriptions produced from selected instruments. -

Stop Raising Issue of Candidate Lineup, Says Dr Masing
26 AUG 2001 Sarawak-Polls STOP RAISING ISSUE OF CANDIDATE LINEUP, SAYS DR MASING KUCHING, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Leaders of Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS), a component party of the Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN), should stop raising the issue of the party's candidate lineup, its publicity chief, Datuk Dr James Jemut Masing, said today. "As far as I am concerned, the candidate lineup is final as announced by party president Datuk Amar Leo Moggie yesterday," he told reporters after opening a contemporary ceramics exhibition on "Bunga Terung" at a gallery at the waterfront here. He said the leaders should now close ranks and ensure that the BN won the state election. Moggie had said that the list, which had been endorsed by the party's supreme council, was official and only awaiting endorsement from BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Moggie's announcement put to rest speculations that PBDS deputy president Datuk Daniel Tajem was attempting to make a comeback to active politics. It also meant that Tajem will not be getting PBDS's ticket to contest in the upcoming election despite speculations that he would be replacing Mong Dagang for the Bukit Begunan state seat, which was once Tajem's stronghold for 22 years. Moggie had also said that incumbent Datuk Sng Chee Hua (Pelagus) would be replaced by his 22-year old son, Larry, a new trend for PBDS which is to inject the youth spirit into politics. The other PBDS incumbents retained are Dublin Unting (Batang Ai), Gabriel Adit (Ngemah), Joseph Entulu (Tamin), John Sikie Tayai (Kakus), Datuk Dr James Jemut Masing (Baleh) and Stanley Ajang (Belaga). -

We measured specimens belonging to 54 mammal species that are shared between Borneo and any of the other areas in order to determine whether there is an intraspecific tendency for Bornean mammals to evolve small body size. Using data on diet, body size and geographical ranges we examine factors that are thought to influence body size. -

Due to the fact that Katibas region is in high rainfall areas and has a river profile that similar to known potential sites, hydrokinetic power should be considered for electrification in this region. Thus, this study reviews the latest literature on the potential of hydropower for rural electrification. To investigate the potential of hydrokinetic power in this region, current status of energy and electrification in Katibas region has been presented. The challenges and benefits of hydrokinetic development to the region and local community also have been and discussed. Introduction Katibas region located along the Katibas River which is a tributary of the Rajang River, located in the district of Song in the Seventh Division, Kapit Sarawak. 12,400 of people estimated residing the long house along the river and other tributary such as Tekalit River, River Musah and Bangkit River. Katibas River is the only access to the most remote settlements in the region which only can be accessed by long boat, took up to 6 hours of journey. -

Email: [email protected] Introduction Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calo- pterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese spe- cies has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the super- family in South China. In 2009, two series of surveys were conducted to Southwest China-Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces. The two provinces are characterized by karst limestone arranged in steep hills and intermontane basins. The climate is warm and the weather is frequently cloudy and rainy all year. This area is usually regarded as one of biodiversity “hotspot” in China (Xu & Wilkes, 2004). Many interesting species are recorded, the checklist and photos of these sur- veys are reported here. And the progress of the research on the superfamily Calopterygoidea is appended. Methods Odonata were recorded by the specimens collected and identified from pho- tographs. Sains Malaysiana 43(10)(2014): 1461–1470 Deforestation, Forest Degradation and Readiness of Local People of Lubuk Antu, Sarawak for REDD+ (Penyahhutanan, Dedgrasi Hutan dan Kesediaan Penduduk Tempatan dari Lubuk Antu, Sarawak bagi REDD +) MUI-HOW PHUA*, WILSON WONG, MEA HOW GOH, KAMLISA UNI KAMLUN, JULIUS KODOH, STEPHEN TEO, FAZILAH MAJID COOKE & SATOSHI TSUYUKI ABSTRACT Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation-plus (REDD+) is considered as an important mitigation strategy against global warming. However, the implementation of REDD+ can adversely affect local people who have been practicing shifting cultivation for generations. We analyzed Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper images of 1990 and 2009 to quantifying deforestation and forest degradation at Lubuk Antu District, a typical rural area of Sarawak, Malaysia. The results showed significant loss of intact forest at 0.9% per year, which was substantially higher than the rate of Sarawak. There were increases of oil palm and rubber areas but degraded forest, the second largest land cover type, had increased considerably. The local people were mostly shifting cultivators, who indicated readiness of accepting the REDD+ mechanism if they were given compensation. We estimated the monthly willingness to accept (WTA) at RM462, which can be considered as the opportunity cost of foregoing their existing shifting cultivation. The monthly WTA was well correlated with their monthly household expenses. Instead of cash payment, rubber cultivation scheme was the most preferred form of compensation. Pakistan Abstract Twelve Bornean species of Cyt~ut~drcrconstitute a new section, Section Ple~msd~isn~u,the name derived from an important diagnostic character, namely the unique fruit with a median septicidal split on each side (not reaching either apex or base of the fruit). Two species recognized remain nameless because the material is inadequate to typify a name. Introduction There are already 40 sectional names in Cyrtandru and the limits and interrelationships of the groups so designated are far from being understood; the addition of yet another sectional name to the list may seem somewhat irresponsible. Nevertheless, the fruit characters that are used to diagnose this section - the smooth fruit wall (due to a thin layer of sclerenchyma beneath the epidermis, Fig. 3), and the septicidal splits with inrolled margins (Fig. 1) form a unique combination in this small group. It is the lateral splits in the fruit-wall that form the basis for the sectional name Pleul-oscAisnza; these splits, it should be noted, are septicidal and there is some reason to suppose that septicidal dehiscence may have been the primitive condition in the family as it is found in Ranlondu, H(xheiYcu, in the type species of Corwliodisc~us,all on the northern fringe of the subfamily Cyrtandroideae, and in the tribe Coronantherae, a basal tribe of subfamily Gesnerioideae found in New Caledonia, E. -
Restoration Planning of Degraded Tropical Forests for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
Restoration planning of degraded tropical forests for biodiversity and ecosystem services Sugeng Budiharta Bachelor of Forestry Master of Science in Conservation Biology A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in January 2016 School of Biological Sciences Abstract Forest restoration has the potential to mitigate the impact of deforestation and forest degradation. Various global policies have been sought to put restoration into the mainstream agenda including under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the program for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+). The Aichi Target of the CBD set a target for at least 15% of degraded ecosystems to be restored by 2020 for key goals including biodiversity conservation, carbon enhancement and the provision of livelihoods. A theoretical framework to underpin decision- making for landscape-scale restoration has been slow to emerge, resulting in a limited contribution from science towards achieving such policy targets. My thesis develops decision frameworks to guide the restoration of degraded tropical forests to enhance biodiversity and the delivery of ecosystem services. In this thesis, three critical questions on how to make better decisions for landscape-scale restoration are addressed by: (a) considering landscape heterogeneity in terms of degradation condition, restoration action and cost, and temporally-explicit restoration benefits; (b) leveraging restoration within competing land uses using emerging policy for offsetting; and (c) enhancing feasibility by accounting for the social and political dimensions related to restoration. I use Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) as a case study area, as it represents a region that is globally important in terms of biodiversity and carbon storage.
