They have evolved a great variety of adaptations to achieve pollination by a diverse group of pollinators. Many orchids reward their pollinators, typically with nectar, but the family is also well- known for employing deceptive pollination strategies in which there is no reward for the pollinator, in the most extreme case by mimicking sexual signals of pollinators. In the European flora, two examples of these different pollination strategies are the sexually deceptive genus Ophrys and the rewarding genus Gymnadenia, which differ in their level of pollinator specialization; Ophrys is typically pollinated by pseudo-copulation of males of a single insect species, whilst Gymnadenia attracts a broad range of floral visitors. Here, we present and describe the annotated floral transcriptome of Ophrys iricolor, an Andrena- pollinated representative of the genus Ophrys that is widespread throughout the Aegean. Furthermore, we present additional floral transcriptomes of both sexually deceptive and rewarding orchids, specifi- cally the deceptive Ophrys insectifera, Ophrys aymoninii, and an updated floral transcriptome of Ophrys sphegodes, as well as the floral transcriptomes of the rewarding orchids Gymnadenia conopsea, Gym- nadenia densiflora, Gymnadenia odoratissima, and Gymnadenia rhellicani (syn. -

Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Schinz & R. Keller, H. vasconicum Martrin-Donos, Onobrychis arenaria (Kit.) DC., Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud., Vicia loiseleurii (M. Bieb) Litv. and the exotic Oenothera speciosa Nutt. Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula). The physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula has been transformed since European settlement, and Part 3: Physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula describes the geology, soils, topography, shoreline and drainage as they would most likely have appeared to the first Europeans to set foot there. -

Rain 2 24th Campitello to Canazei and back. Bright sunshine 3 25th Campitello via Pian into the Val Duron and back. Warm and dry 4 26th Campitello to Col Rodela with lift. Warm and dry 5 27th Bus to Pera and walked up the Val di Vaiolet 6 28th Bus to Alba di Canazei and lift to Ciampac. Explore high level area. 7 29th Fields above Campitello, then after lunch in the woods on the other side of the river. Cloudy, warm 8 30th Last look around local woods and then transfer to Marco Polo Venice airport. Late afternoon arrivals from London and Manchester at Marco Polo airport in Venice where we were met by Yiannis and our bus. We then transferred to our destination Campitello di Fassa through the dramatic scenery of the Dolomites. 24th June. Bright sunshine greeted us on our first day in Campitello, unlike yesterday’s rainy weather. We set out from Campitello in the morning on our first walk towards Canazei through meadows and woodland. We soon met the first of the banks with a riot of colourful plants, and we started identifying the commoner ones: the pink Onobrychis montana, blue Salvia pratensis, pink Aster alpinus, white Leucanthemum daisies, Scabiosa dipsacifolia, yellow Rhinanthus and many other lower growing plants such as Acinos alpinus and Thymus serpyllum. -

Upon our arrival, just after 5pm and passing through passport control we collected our luggage and on to arrivals where we met up with Paul T, our local tour leader. With our luggage loaded into the minibuses, we set off towards Istria with the aim of passing through the very attractive historic centre of Trieste and then on along the motorway beyond the city towards Koper-Capodistria, the main port in Slovenia. Many, indeed most of the place-names in this report are in two languages, Croatian (or Slovene) and Italian. At the crossroads of Europe where the three main language groups meet (Romance, Slav and Germanic), the area is an ethnic mix with large areas of bi- (and even tri-) lingualism. Taking the road for the centre of Trieste along the Costiera we stopped at the Galleria naturale for views across the Gulf of Trieste and towards the Slovenian and Croatian coast of Istria. -

Based on natural selection, mutation and genetic drift, speciation occurs simultaneously in organisms linking them in complexes webs called ecosystems. Clarify what a species is, it is the first step to understand the biology of orchids and start protection actions especially in a fast changing world due to human impact such as habitats fragmentation and climate changes. I use the biological species concept (BSC) to investigate the presence and eventually the strength of mechanisms that limit the gene flow between close related taxa.
