namesake, and great-granddaughter of Town Founder Isaac Roop, received the recognition along with Dennis Wobbe, of Doyle. Zellamae was a Lassen Historical Museum docent and has served as president for the Historical Society. When her two children were growing up she was active in Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts, and was an active member in the Methodist Church. “She is a true shining star and a wonderful asset to Lassen County,” read the Old Timers nomination sheet for Miles. “She makes a difference in a lot of people’s lives.” As the years go on, the tradition remains for the annual Old Timers of the Year award. Starting in 1969, the award helped guide newcomers to those who knew the area best. Now, it stands to honor the selfless service so many give to Lassen County, its people and its organizations. There’s still plenty of time to get in late summer/early fall crops of lettuce, spinach, kale and other similar greens. It’s just getting out there to do it. He moved to Lassen County in 1855. Peter and fellow prospector Edward Clapper were murdered April 26, 1859 in Nevada in Clapper Canyon (then known as Black Rock Canyon) while searching for silver. A third prospector, Americus (Lemericus in some accounts) Wyatt, survived the attack, but the facts of the murder remain in dispute to this day. According to some accounts, Americus said his partners where shot by a sniper, but others say he reported Native Americans killed Peter and Edward — an allegation they vehemently deny. Why, Americus himself has even been considered a suspect. Some have even pointed fingers at disgruntled Mormon emigrants! Peter’s last words reportedly were, “They have killed me.” Many historians question the assertion Native Americans are responsible for the murders.
