Date: 20040331 Docket: T-292-04 Citation: 2004 FC 488 Ottawa, Ontario, this 31st day of March, 2004 Present: THE HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE von FINCKENSTEIN BETWEEN: BMG CANADA INC., EMI MUSIC CANADA, A DIVISION OF EMI GROUP CANADA INC., SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT (CANADA) INC., UNIVERSAL MUSIC CANADA INC., WARNER MUSIC CANADA LTD., BMG MUSIC, ARISTA RECORDS, INC., ZOMBA RECORDING CORPORATION, EMI MUSIC SWEDEN AB, CAPITOL RECORDS, INC., CHRYSALIS RECORDS LIMITED, VIRGIN RECORDS LIMITED, SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT INC., SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT (UK) INC., UMG RECORDINGS, INC., MERCURY RECORDS LIMITED AND WEA INTERNATIONAL INC. Plaintiffs and JOHN DOE, JANE DOE AND ALL THOSE PERSONS WHO ARE INFRINGING COPYRIGHT IN THE PLAINTIFFS’ SOUND RECORDINGS Defendants REASONS FOR ORDER AND ORDER Page: 2 [1] The plaintiffs (collectively hereinafter called CRIA) are all members of Canada’s recording industry and are bringing this motion to seek disclosure from five Canadian internet service providers, namely Shaw Communications Inc., Rogers Cable Communications Inc., Bell Sympatico, Telus Inc. and Vidéotron Ltée. (hereinafter collectively called ISPs) of the identity of certain customers who, it is alleged, have infringed copyright laws by illegally trading in music downloaded from the internet. [2] The plaintiffs are unable to determine the name, address or telephone number of the 29 internet users in question as they operate under pseudonyms associated with software which they use; e.g., Geekboy @KaZaA. However, they have conducted an investigation, through which, they submit, it was discovered that these individuals used Internet Protocol addresses (IP addresses) registered with the ISPs which are the respondents to this motion. The plaintiffs are now seeking an order, pursuant to Rules 233 and 238 of the Federal Court Rules, 1998, SOR/98-106, to compel the ISPs to disclose the names of the customers who used the 29 IP addresses at times material to these proceedings. -

The Dynamics of Legal and Illegal Digital Music Distribution Christian Syvertsen
Master thesis The dynamics of legal and illegal digital music distribution Christian Syvertsen 1 Preface This paper was written as a Master thesis in Informatics for Christian Syvertsen at the University of Oslo. The Master studies were started spring 2005, and the thesis is to be delivered November 2007. This Master thesis has been realized at the department of Information Systems at the Institute of Informatics at the University of Oslo, with great assistance and advice by supervisors Jennifer Blechar and Ole Hanseth. November 2007 University of Oslo, Department of Informatics Page 2 of 86 Master thesis The dynamics of legal and illegal digital music distribution Christian Syvertsen 2 Abstract In this thesis I give an overview and background of the current digital music landscape, analyse it through Actor Network Theory and see the complexity of the network as making it difficult to break down into less holistic parts. Every part of the network influences the other. As illegal downloads of illegally copyrighted music only increases, it seems apparent that the record industry have taken a wrong strategy. Copyright laws have been tightened, DRM systems have been applied and lawsuits have been made, but it seems that it has no decreasing effect on the illegal downloads. I believe what the record companies must to is to put more efforts into making a better legal music download service, that actually can offer a better product than the P2P networks, because then increasing numbers of users will prefer that legal alternative. But for something like this to be achieved, there is a long way to go. -

Review of the EU Copyright Framework
Review of the EU copyright framework European Implementation Assessment Review of the EU copyright framework: The implementation, application and effects of the "InfoSoc" Directive (2001/29/EC) and of its related instruments European Implementation Assessment Study In October 2014, the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) requested from the European Parliament Research Service (EPRS) an Ex Post Impact Assessment on Directive 2001/29/EC on the harmonisation of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society (InfoSoc). This EPRS publication was originally commissioned in the context of JURI's own- initiative implementation report, which was adopted in Plenary in July 2015, Rapporteur Julia Reda MEP. However, it is also relevant to the work of JURI Committees' Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright (CWG), chaired by Jean Marie Cavada MEP. Furthermore, this request was made in the wider context of the Commission's review of the EU legislative framework on copyright, and the ensuing legislative proposals, which have been a long time in the planning and which are now expected for the 4th quarter of 2015. The objective of these proposals is to modernise the EU copyright framework, and in particular the InfoSoc Directive, in light of the digital transformation. Accordingly, in response to the JURI request, the Ex-Post Impact Assessment Unit of the European Parliament Research Service decided to produce a "European Implementation Assessment on the review of the EU copyright framework". Implementation reports of EP committees are now routinely accompanied by European Implementation Assessments, drawn up by the Ex-Post Impact Assessment Unit of the Directorate for Impact Assessment and European Added Value, within the European Parliament's Directorate-General for Parliamentary Research Services. -

Mathematical Tripos Part III Lecture Courses in 2020-2021
Mathematical Tripos Part III Lecture Courses in 2020-2021 Department of Pure Mathematics & Mathematical Statistics Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics Notes and Disclaimers. • Students may attend any combination of lectures but should note that it is not possible to take two courses for examination that are lectured in the same timetable slot. There is no requirement that students study only courses offered by one Department. • The code in parentheses after each course name indicates the term of the course (M: Michaelmas; L: Lent; E: Easter), and the number of lectures in the course. Unless indicated otherwise, a 16 lecture course is equivalent to 2 credit units, while a 24 lecture course is equivalent to 3 credit units. Please note that certain courses are non-examinable, and are indicated as such after the title. Some of these courses may be the basis for Part III essays. • At the start of some sections there is a paragraph indicating the desirable previous knowledge for courses in that section. On the one hand, such paragraphs are not exhaustive, whilst on the other, not all courses require all the pre-requisite material indicated. However you are strongly recommended to read up on the material with which you are unfamiliar if you intend to take a significant number of courses from a particular section. • The courses described in this document apply only for the academic year 2020-21. Details for subsequent years are often broadly similar, but not necessarily identical. The courses evolve from year to year. • Please note that while an attempt has been made to ensure that the outlines in this booklet are an accurate indication of the content of courses, the outlines do not constitute definitive syllabuses.
