FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS: A YOUNG PEOPLES EDITION PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Ron Powers, Michael French, James Bradley | 224 pages | 01 Sep 2006 | Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group Inc | 9780440229209 | English | New York, NY, United States Flags of Our Fathers: commemorating Iwo Jima | The Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus He has hired Japanese-American writer Iris Yamashita to write the script and reportedly intends to hire some of the cream of Japanese acting. And was a box office hit in Japan. But the star got a taste of potential problems with the project when he met Governor Ishihara, under whose jurisdiction the island falls. I was scared to death, and angry but I was also thinking what a place America must be, what a culture, and how different from Japan. Then I heard other planes but no machine guns this time; they were Zeros in pursuit, and their insignia was the Japanese flag. I felt like reaching up to embrace that rising sun. Memorials to Iwo Jima dot the country, including one on Mt. After six decades of negative portrayals of the Imperial Army, right-wingers like Ishihara and Shindo want Eastwood to show that Japanese troops were no better or worse than their US counterparts. Like them, they obeyed orders and fought to the death. Eastwood to correct that misunderstanding. But even those who do accept that the Imperial Army committed brutal crimes during its conquest, colonization and battle for Asia, wonder whether the movie will show how the battle looked from the Japanese side. When they landed they expected it to be easy but we hid and waited before attacking, which is so why so many of them died. It was the only place in World War II where they suffered so many casualties, and I think that is why we have earned this reputation of being so barbaric. I threw myself into a bomb crater and there were two marines there and I realized I was the only one alive. By the time he got to Suribachi four days after D-Day, the flag had already been planted on the summit. The Marines decided to restage the event using a larger flag. Rosenthal clicked the most famous image of the war, but the kinetic spontaneity that made the shot such a potent and mythological propaganda weapon has always been suspect. Suribachi was about the only place they could have done it. You could see the result of this during the 40th anniversary of Iwo Jima, when America first suggested a joint memorial service that honored both the victims and survivors. As he casts around for inspiration, he could do worse than read the poetry of US veteran Bill Madden, who lost friends and much of his hearing on Iwo Jima before later writing: Jim is gone, mortar- blasted Iwo blasted, evil-blasted; Just two survive, Al and me. Then Al is gone. This is a revised and expanded version of an article that appeared in The Independent on Dec. Published at Japan Focus on January 9, January 4, Created by DataMomentum. Tells the story of the battle and the stories of the 5 men who raised the flag in the iconic picture. Should be required reading for school kids. Nov 24, Casey rated it really liked it. I accidentally reserved the young adult version of this book from the library rather than the normal version and I ended up being very glad that I did. I don't know how the young adult version differs from the original, but I definitely felt like I got all of the key information and it was a quicker read, which I appreciated. My Mom read the last chapter with me and she was bawling even though she hadn't even read the rest of the book! Amazing to hear what those men survived through. Reminder to I accidentally reserved the young adult version of this book from the library rather than the normal version and I ended up being very glad that I did. Reminder to all of us how important it is to remember!! Jan 20, Aaron Cochrill rated it really liked it. I am glad I read this book and was able to reflect on the events of Iwo Jima and the men who gave up everything for us. The author did a phenomenal job relating how even surviving this battle was a loss in many ways. I believe he did a great job reflecting the thoughts and feelings of the men whose stories he related. It was extremely well done. Apr 09, Michelle rated it it was amazing. Incredible read. A must. View 1 comment. Jul 13, Elli Williams added it Shelves: didn-t-finish. Not appropriate in a YP edition especially. May 05, Linda Dexheimer added it. Linda Dexheimer Informational This book was adapted from it's original version for young adults. The book is written about the flag raising at Iwo Jima and the 6 men that raised the flag. The author, James Bradley, is the son of one of the men. He researched the lives of the 6 men and describes the events leading up to the raising of the flag and the days after. Interesting read and perspectives. It seemed well-researched and is told in a narrative that's easy to read. Feb 21, Santiago Estrada rated it it was amazing. In , the narrator talks about an island called Iwo Jima, the death of his father, John Henry Bradley, who actually took his story into his grave, so he wasnt really identified by a lot. In , John would write letters and send them to the Iwo Jima island saying that hed give his left arm to have a shower and a shave. John hasnt had food or water for days straight at that time. John also claimed that having to do a bit to raising a flag with the happiest moment of his life, but he never mentioned it to his family. The narrator started to get curious and learn more about Iwo Jima, since his father was able to get it to be conspicuous to his family. He bought many many books about Iwo Jima he even lost count how many books he had been reading. He found out the names of the people who were shoving a flagpole aloft. He then wanted to trace them, he even phoned everyone and everywhere to find the boys. He even wishes to know the surviving veterans at Iwo Jima too. Eventually he started to travel to a lot more different places to get to know more, where more people lived. Later on the Japanese bombs would spread among those who would raise the flag at Iwo Jima, but the first flag would break so a replacement flag would arrive. The Common Virtue, the men of Easy Company were in their sixties. All of their families have grown, their stories are coming near to an end. Everyone is trying to get to know eachother one more time until the end. I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 due to Really great details on events and great story line with multiple characters. The major theme was that greed is destructive, there were attacks on islands, fights on a summit, and even some war details. These ideas of having violent events was common for books like these. The Japanese had bombs and they even attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing a lot. The Japanese were sometimes the main enemies at some points as they would keep their own air force but there was an American Air Force protecting Iwo Jima. Some people were at the beach of Iwo Jima, and one of the Americans shot one of the Japanese men with a rifle. Some also came in empty handed though. In conclusion, a lot of these parts have fighting and even attacks on peaceful islands. The narrator of the story is kind of relatable to me and is my favorite. He gets shocked whenever he finds out about his dad saying that raising a flag was the happiest moment of his life, but the dad never ever talked about it. Honestly, I would be shocked myself if my father kept something from me that could be interesting at the same time. Since the father kept a lot of things as a secret, his story was never really released to the world. The narrator was making a few assumptions about Iwo Jima since his father never talked about it much. The narrator got curious of Iwo Jima since his father never talked about it. Curiosity is part of a lot of lives and will never stop being part of it. I am actually someone who is curious a lot of times so I could relate of trying to find out about things I never knew when I was little. In conclusion, the narrator himself can actually represent part of my personality, he gets curious about the story of others, and he also tried to research about much of unknown places to him. I would rate this book as a 5 out of 5, this book had so many details about what was going on for Iwo Jima. This book had the stories for multiple characters and even in one book all those stories were able to be fit in. The story of an adventure to Iwo Jima is incredible to me.
