  • Our First U.S. Senator! WINTER 2005 • PLUS 2003–2004
THE MAGAZINE OF THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW Winter 2004 MEL MARTINEZ FSU LAW Our First U.S. Senator! • WINTER 2005 PLUS 2003–2004 ANNUAL REPORT 3 A National Law School We woke up one morning to discover that we have a national law school on our hands. Our primary loyalty is, of course, to the taxpayers of Florida, who provide us with substantial subsidy. The best way to honor their trust is to offer an academic program that is a credit to our students and to our alumni. We must maximize the value of a law degree from Florida State. To do that, we must offer a program that is held in high regard both regionally and nationally and is attractive to students from other states. This year, our 750 students come from 208 different colleges and universities and 37 different states. Although most of our students are and should be Florida residents, the out-of-state tuition of $27,500 a year (versus $7,500 a year for Florida residents) has not deterred the thirty percent of our students who hail from other states. Our average LSAT has risen to 159 (79th percentile), and 25% of our from the dean students have LSAT scores of 161 (85th percentile) or above. On the downside, we are forced to turn away many fine applicants. On the upside, the students we enroll are extraordinarily bright, hardworking and impressive in many ways. Our minority enrollment in this fall’s entering class is 25%, with Asian Americans now making up 5% of our student body.
