Bigelow Masculinity
Networking Knowledge: Journal of the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network, Vol. 4, No. 1 (2011) Article TOUGH GUY IN DRAG? HOW THE EXTERNAL, CRITICAL DISCOURSES SURROUNDING KATHRYN BIGELOW DEMONSTRATE THE WIDER PROBLEMS OF THE GENDER QUESTION. RONA MURRAY, De Montford University ABSTRACT This article argues that the various approaches adopted towards Kathryn Bigelow’s work, and their tendency to focus on a gendered discourse, obscures the wider political discourses these texts contain. In particular, by analysing the representation of masculinity across the films, it is possible to see how the work of this director and her collaborators is equally representative of its cultural context and how it uses the trope of the male body as a site for a dialectical study of the uses and status of male strength within an imperialistically-minded western society. KEYWORDS Counter-cultural, feminism, feminist, gender, masculinity, western. ISSN 1755-9944 1 Networking Knowledge: Journal of the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network, Vol. 4, No. 1 (2011) Whether the director Kathryn Bigelow likes it or not, gender has been made to lie at the heart of her work, not simply as it figures in her texts but also as it is used to initiate discussion about her own function/place as an auteur? Her career illustrates how the personal becomes the political not via individual agency but in the way she has come to stand as a particular cultural symbol – as a woman directing men in male-orientated action genres. As this persona has become increasingly loaded with various significances, it has begun to alter the interpretations of her films. -

Political Reelism: a Rhetorical Criticism of Reflection and Interpretation in Political Films
POLITICAL REELISM: A RHETORICAL CRITICISM OF REFLECTION AND INTERPRETATION IN POLITICAL FILMS Jennifer Lee Walton A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2006 Committee: John J. Makay, Advisor Richard Gebhardt Graduate Faculty Representative John T. Warren Alberto Gonzalez ii ABSTRACT John J. Makay, Advisor The purpose of this study is to discuss how political campaigns and politicians have been depicted in films, and how the films function rhetorically through the use of core values. By interpreting real life, political films entertain us, perhaps satirically poking fun at familiar people and events. However, the filmmakers complete this form of entertainment through the careful integration of American values or through the absence of, or attack on those values. This study provides a rhetorical criticism of movies about national politics, with a primary focus on the value judgments, political consciousness and political implications surrounding the films Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), The Candidate (1972), The Contender (2000), Wag the Dog (1997), Power (1986), and Primary Colors (1998). iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank everyone who made this endeavor possible. First and foremost, I thank Doctor John J. Makay; my committee chair, for believing in me from the start, always encouraging me to do my best, and assuring me that I could do it. I could not have done it without you. I wish to thank my committee members, Doctors John Warren and Alberto Gonzalez, for all of your support and advice over the past months. -

The set design for the 88th annual production, For the Record, called for a massive 11-foot-diameter rotating globe suspended above the stage and wrapped in the masthead of the show’s fictional newspaper, the Chicago Offering. Northwestern’s set, scenery, and paint shops are located in the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts, but Waa-Mu is performed in Cahn Auditorium. How to pull off such a planetary transplant? By deflating Earth. The globe began as a plain white (albeit custom-built) inflatable balloon, but after its initial multisection muslin wrap was created (to determine shrinkage), it was deflated, rigged, reinflated, motorized, map-designed, taped for a paint mask, primed, painted, and unpeeled to reveal computer-generated, to-scale continents. -

2020 Newsletter Issue 1 Term 1 Week 2
St Michael’s Primary School Newsletter 3–5 Chapel Lane, Tel: 9865 1600 Fax: 9865 1699 Baulkham Hills Email: [email protected] Issue 1 Term 1 Week 2 Thursday 6 February 2020 From the Principal Dear Parents Welcome to St Michael’s A very warm welcome to our new school year, which promises to be a very exciting one. I hope all families enjoyed a safe and relaxing holiday. It was wonderful to see so many smiling and eager faces arrive last week, particularly our new Kindergarten students and our new children in Years 1-6. A very special welcome to all our families. Being a parent is a special job. One of the many aspects of parenthood is that you are your child’s first teacher. In joining St Michael’s school community you enter into partnership with your child’s teacher as together you share a common goal—a happy and successful school year for your child. Parents and teachers are partners in helping each child develop to their full potential. I encourage all parents to become involved in the life of the school where at all possible. Teachers welcome helpers in the classroom, sporting events and excursions. Please note at any time you enter school grounds during the day, you need to report to the school office first. You must not go directly to classrooms. A reminder that all parents who wish to assist in any capacity at the school need to have completed the online Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta child protection training and undertaking.
