  • Many Readers Have “Go-To” Authors, Writers They Turn to When No One Else Grabs Their Attention
SUMMER READING GUIDE 2018 Many readers have “go-to” authors, writers they turn to when no one else grabs their attention. This summer we’d like to help you find a “go-to” writer of your own. Below is a list of authors who have many titles to their credit. Some have written a series with recurring characters; some have written books with similar themes; some have written exclusively within one genre (mystery, fantasy, and so on); and some have just produced lots of good, lively writing over the years. In addition, we have included some individual titles, recommended by students, by faculty, and by the library staff. THE HEADMASTER’S CHOICE THIS YEAR IS BEARTOWN BY FREDRIK BACKMAN, WHICH BEGINS LIKE THIS: “It’s a Friday in early March in Beartown and nothing has happened yet. Everyone is waiting. Tomorrow, the Beartown Ice Hockey Club’s junior team is playing in the semi-final of the biggest youth tournament in the country. How important can something like that be? In most places, not so important, of course. But Beartown isn’t most places.” Backman’s novel explores the hopes that a small community pins on a group of teenaged athletes, and it explores the secrets that can tear a small town apart. Backman’s characters—coaches, athletes, parents, and local fans—are often flawed, often heroic, and always fully human. In addition to Beartown, you are to read two other books from the list below. You may choose two books by the same author, or two books by different authors.

S. Byatt’s Possession: A Romance Liv Christina Varen III © Liv Christina Varen 2012 Ladies of the Ivory Tower: Academic Feminism and Feminist Academics in Carol Shields’s Swann, David Lodge’s Nice Work, and A. S. Byatt’s Possession: A Romance Liv Christina Varen http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: Kopianstalten AS, Kristiansand IV Abstract This thesis explores the representation and negotiation of academic feminism and feminist academics in three best-selling campus novels: Carol Shields’ Swann (1987), David Lodge’s Nice Work (1988), and A.S Byatt’s Possession: A Romance (1990). It is based on the assumption that academic fiction may function as a significant contribution to academic and social debate, allowing for other modes of staging and exploring feminist issues than those offered by academic non-fiction. The close-readings of these three novels are supplemented by discussions concerning interpretive possibilities and reception in relation to the authors’ public profiles, as these possibilities arguably entail a particular emphasis on representational responsibility in terms of reception. The latter is here assumed to depend, in part, on the cognitive interaction of the author’s public profile and the reader’s interpretive horizon.

Russell) 256-234-4644 (Mamie’s Place) — Website: www.alexandercityal.gov/library Director: Amy Huff MARCH 2020 Edited by John M. Taylor From the Director: The Alexander City Chamber of Commerce presented the annual State of the City event at Central Alabama Com- munity College’s Betty Carol Graham Technology Center on February 26, 2020. John Taylor, Assistant Library Director, and Robert Bradford, Library Assistant, represented both Adelia Russell and Mamie’s Place at the event along with library board member Sheralyn Belyeu. Mayor Tommy Spraggins and other city officials enlightened the audience on the positive aspects of the city. The renovation of the old Russell Main Office building and the progress of the new City Complex was one of the popu- lar topics shared. It is great to see historical places restored and progress being made for our City so that our City Government can run smoother and more effectively. Alexander City is a wonderful community with aspirations of progress. Its small town demeanor and welcoming charm make it a great place to live and work. We appreciate all the effort, research and elbow grease that helps produce good outcomes for this community. Robert’s Take: From the pen of Robert Bradford The American Standard version of the Bible in Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2 reads in part, “For Everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven: a time to be born; And a time to die…,” Authors seemingly live on for- ever through their works, but they too eventually pass from this life.

  • Addition to Summer Letter
May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays.

  • Protest and Resistance in the Crime Writing of Anne Perry Abstract
4 Protest and resistance in the crime writing of Anne Perry JOANNE DRAYTON Abstract Anne Perry writes to re-write herself, to protest women’s condition, and to explore and re-imagine her own. This paper will examine how the essentialising label of evil became the established reading of Anne Perry (Juliet Hulme) and Pauline Parker and their crime, and how as a result of this vilification, protest and resistance became key provocations for Perry’s adult writing. It will show how Perry uses her fiction to protest women’s position generally, and as a means of resisting the label of evil and re-writing self. It will examine her crime detective fic- tion writing following the development of both her Pitt and Monk series, and will explore themes in her work of forgiveness and redemption through compassion and positive endeavour. It will show how Perry’s books have helped create a different ending. They are a form of redemption in themselves: a re-configuring for Perry of the construction of evil to that of writer and published author. Key words: crime fiction, biography, murder, lesbianism, adolescence, evil, redemption Introduction On 22 June 1954, Honorah Parker was bludgeoned to death in Victoria Park, Christchurch, by her teenage daughter, Pauline Parker, and Pauline’s school friend, Juliet Hulme. In the days after the Parker-Hulme murder, newspapers across New Zealand were ablaze with the story. Overnight Pauline Parker was arrested and 14 exercise books, including her diaries, were con- fiscated. The next day Juliet Hulme would also be charged with murder.
