His family and friends are honoring his memory by establishing an interdisciplinary study of veterans’ issues at Adler’s alma mater, Harvard University. The endeavor strives to create a prestigious field of study to formulate the best public policy for our nation’s veterans. Congressman Adler’s wife, Shelley and his three sons Jeffery, Andrew, and Oliver spoke at the event. His fourth son, Alex, a student at Cornell was unable to attend due to mid-semester testing. Also in attendance was US Senator Bob Menendez, US Congressman Frank Pallone, US Congressman Leonard Lance, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The poll finds 41% of registered voters prefer Republican State Senator Leonard Lance while 37% support Democrat Assemblywomen Linda Stender. Among likely voters, Lance leads Stender by 43% to 39%, with 4% choosing a third party candidate and a sizable 14% who are undecided. The seat, which has been held by outgoing GOP Congressman Mike Ferguson since 2001, is one of a number of districts nationally that Democrats have targeted this year. In 2006, Stender came within 3,000 votes of unseating Ferguson. Lance holds a 76% to 6% lead among his fellow Republicans, while Stender has a 74% to 11% advantage among Democratic voters. Independent voters prefer Lance by a slim 34% to 31% margin, although 27% of this voter group are still undecided. Lance’s overall position in the race is bolstered by a strong show of support in his home county of Hunterdon, where he holds a commanding 55% to 31% lead. He is also slightly ahead in the Somerset County portion of the district by 36% to 33%.

In the 114th Congress, Lance serves as New Jersey’s only member of the Energy and Commerce Committee -- he calls it the most important committee in the House because of its wide jurisdiction. On that panel he’s pushed for construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline and opposed the Federal Communications Commission’s net-neutrality rules, which prohibit Internet service providers from blocking or slowing online traffic or offering faster service in return for payment. The FCC’s plan is the “most dramatic government intervention in the Internet in two decades,” Lance said in February 2015. Along with New York Democrat Grace Meng and Texas Republican Joe Barton, a former Energy and Commerce chairman, Lance has promoted legislation to strengthen a prohibition against “caller ID spoofing” by entities that knowingly transit false caller identification information. The House passed their bill in September 2014, though the Senate didn’t act on it.

    NATURAL and CULTURAL FEATURES of MONMOUTH COUNTY Background Reading for Environmental Health Investigations MCHD Rev. 07/29/13 INTRODUCTION Monmouth County in central New Jersey is entirely located within the Inner and Outer Coastal Plain, part of the Atlantic Plain geology that extends 2200 miles from Cape Cod to the Yucatan Peninsula (USGS, 2003). There are 53 municipalities within a land area of 471.74 square miles of highly erodible soils that were originally deposited as runoff from the slopes of the Appalachians (MCPB, 2005). Some County History Following Henry Hudson’s exploration of the Sandy Hook shoreline in 1609, Monmouth County was predominantly under Dutch influence from about 1614 to 1664 (Colts Neck Historical Society, 1965). The New Jersey coastline had previously been sited and claimed for England (Giovanni Caboto, 1497), France (Giovanni de Verrazano, 1524), and Spain (Estevan Gomez, 1525); and had been Scheyichbi, Long Land Water, to the Lenape Indian Nation (Colts Neck Historical Society, 1965). Four major trails used by Native Americans terminated at the Navesink River: the Achkinkeshacky (Hackensack) Trail from the Hudson River; the Minisink Trail from the Great Lakes region; the Raritan-Lopotcong Trail from the west, and the Crosweeksung Trail from the southwest. This last trail entered NJ at Trenton, passed through Freehold to the Yellow Brook at Colts Neck, where it split into a northern path to Tinton Falls and Red Bank, and a southern path to the Shark River and Manasquan (NFECA, 2009). The first settlers in Middletown, the oldest settlement in NJ, are reported to have arrived as early as 1613, seven years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts; Middletown was originally called Shaquaset by the Lenape (Boyd, 2004; Mandeville, 1927).

    Protect Our Care April 4, 2017 April Recess: Reject Repeal and #ProtectOurCare The next congressional recess is right around the corner. Between Friday, April 7 and Sunday, April 23, members of the Senate and House will leave Washington and return home for two weeks. We cannot let up the fight to protect our health care - Speaker Paul Ryan is promising to bring forward another bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And just days before recess is set to begin they have promised to make their already bad bill worse. Their latest repeal effort would allow states to eliminate protections for those with pre-existing conditions. We need to send a strong message over the next few weeks to #ProtectOurCare: Do not take away our care. Stop trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Here’s where things stand right now: (1) The House had to pull their health care repeal bill after at least 30 Republicans refused to vote for it. (2) At that time, Paul Ryan admitted, “Obamacare is the law of the land. [...] We are going to be with it for the foreseeable future.” (3) Flash forward and Paul Ryan and other House Republican leaders are back at it, talking about bringing their even worse repeal back after recess. President Trump and Republican operatives are urging him on and there will be tremendous pressure on House members to go along, even those who publicly opposed the Ryan bill before. So what does that mean: The Affordable Care Act is still under threat and we need to intensify pressure to ​ make sure Republicans get the message that repeal has been rejected and it’s time to give up on repeal.
