He began donating to the museum when it opened in 1913 and continued to bequeath objects as well as papers until 1932. His contributions included costumes, paintings, and the table used for the signing of the agreement by which the Californians surrendered to the United States at Campo de Cahuenga, January 13, 1847. PREFACE. No country or section during the first decade following the conquest of California, has been more prolific of adventure than our own bright and beautiful land; and to rescue from threatened oblivion the incidents herein related, and either occurring under the personal observation of the author, or related to him on the ground by the actors therein, and to give place on the page of history to the names of brave and worthy men who figured in the stirring events of the times referred to, as well as to portray pioneer life as it then existed, not only among the American pioneers, but also the California Spaniards, the author sends forth his book of Reminiscences, trusting that its many imperfections may be charitably scrutinized by a criticising public, and that the honesty of purpose with which it is written will be duly appreciated. How California Was Won: Race, Citizenship, And The Colonial Roots Of California, 1846 – 1879 Abstract The construction of California as an American state was a colonial project premised upon Indigenous removal, state-supported land dispossession, the perpetuation of unfree labor systems and legal, race- based discrimination alongside successful Anglo-American settlement. This dissertation, entitled “How the West was Won: Race, Citizenship, and the Colonial Roots of California, 1849 - 1879” argues that the incorporation of California and its diverse peoples into the U.S. depended on processes of colonization that produced and justified an adaptable acialr hierarchy that protected white privilege and supported a racially-exclusive conception of citizenship. In the first section, I trace how the California Constitution and federal and state legislation violated the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This legal system empowered Anglo-American migrants seeking territorial, political, and economic control of the region by allowing for the dispossession of Californio and Indigenous communities and legal discrimination against Californio, Indigenous, Black, and Chinese persons.

We think of them waiting for the call to arms, Fighting to save their families and farms; We picture the furrow where the dropped plough lies, The women watching them go with quiet eyes. Is it because they died so many springs Ago that we forget the other things They did from day to day? They must have wept, Laughed, talked of the future. I think they kept Their dreams tended as gently as their corn, And planned great things for children yet unborn. And as I watch the spring unfold each year, I think that they held beauty almost as dear As freedom. The battle won, they heeded her command, And planted dogwood in their promised land.
