Also portraits of city department heads, including auditors, library directors, and other positions like jailer. Many of the photographs were given to Prudhomme by individual owners; Prudhomme in turn gifted the entire collection. The container list has titles and descriptions primarily based on the donor accession record (the [AR] notation); or based on written notations on the verso of the photographs by Prudhomme or the original owner; or in some cases based on research notations by a museum curator. When a description includes, i.e. “By George Hildebrand”, the named individual was the original owner. The photographer name or studio is provided in the container list where available. Titles and descriptions may contain Spanish names spelled interchangeably with an “I” or “Y”; women’s names may include “nee” before their maiden name; or “de” to connect their surnames, particularly if a woman married twice or three times. Titles include abbreviations for Señor, Señora, and Señorita (Sr., Sra., Sta. and Srita.) and Mr., Mrs., and Miss. Biographical Note: Prudhomme (1854-1934) was the son of Frenchman Leon Victor Prudon and a Californio mother, Mercedes Tapia. He was an active member of the Historical Society of Southern California, and he was a collector of historical artifacts and photographs. He began donating to the museum when it opened in 1913 and continued to bequeath objects as well as papers until 1932. His contributions included costumes, paintings, and the table used for the signing of the agreement by which the Californians surrendered to the United States at Campo de Cahuenga, January 13, 1847. Prudhomme’s father took part in the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846.
