Modern Australian jazz followed this musical path and in Melbourne, , and Brisbane musicians eschewed the traditional 1920s-30s movement and progressives including Errol Buddle, Splinter Reeves, Ron Falson, Bryce Rohde, Frank Smith, Jack Bro- kensha, Ralph Mallen, Les Welch, Brian Brown, Keith Hounslow, John Pochee and friends championed the new music. These young moderns played in clubs, coffee lounges and pubs, appeared on the popular jazz concert platforms and created an enthusiastic follow- ing. As the music became popular dedicated venues opened to support it including The Basement and El Rocco in Sydney and Jazz Centre 44 and The Embers in Melbourne.

EITHER YOU HAVE THE FEELING OR YOU DON’T………….. HAWK DAVIES

LET US REMEMBER ………….. ROBERT EDGAR Outside of work Robert loved jazz and didn’t miss a Mildura Jazz Festival for thirty odd years. Many of his greatest friendships evolved through jazz. .Robert was also a tireless worker organising the Festival for many years and received life membership of the Jazz Club in acknowledgment of his efforts. Some of the best times in Eileen and Robert’s lives were attending jazz festivals all over Victoria and sometimes interstate. Robert loved to get out and dance and Eileen and Marie Ballantine were his two favourite dance partners . One abiding memory is of Robert leading the jazz pa- rade down Mildura’s main street at the start of the Festival ,in his brown striped jacket and jaunty jazz hat captured him in his element doing what he Loved . Eileen and Robert weaved their love of jazz into their business by hold- ing several jazz nights at the cafe which are remembered as incredibly fun events loved by the musos and attendees alike. Pam and Bill Lawler are among the great friends they met in the cafe and they bonded over their mutual love of jazz.. Our condolences to Eileen on the passing of Robert. BAND REVIEW ……………… “About the Band”

Formed in 1984, Chris Ludowyk hand picked the cream of Melbourne’s jazz talent to form the ‘Society Syncopators’. Now known as ‘The Syncopators’, they achieved the pinnacle of Australian jazz within a few years. With their versatility (the guitarist plays banjo, the bassist plays tuba, the clarinetist plays alto and tenor sax and the trombonist plays bass), they cover a wide range of styles and material. The vocal harmonising talent of the front-line also lends itself to the performance of ‘popular jazz’ material a la ‘Mills Brothers’ and ‘Boswell Sisters’. Although their repertoire stems from the roots of traditional jazz, they play everything from classic jazz through mainstream to pre-rock rhythm and . This guarantees a much broader audience and wider appeal than that of a ‘straight’ jazz group. Arguably, few other groups are perceived to possess the range of material and individual talent of this group. The instrumentation also allows total flexibility for formats ranging from pin-drop concerts to caba- ret and dinner dances. At concerts, virtuoso solo spots also highlight the talents of the individual artists. By excelling at the music they love and loving the music they excel at, they are recognised as one of the leading classic/ groups in Australia by critics and jazz fans alike. Arguably they are regarded as the leaders in their field in the world. This, plus their superb musicianship, stage presence and keen sense of humour invariably draw standing ovations worldwide.
