Although it is not being done in person, all parishioners are asked to generously help the charitable group that has been assigned to us. This year our parish mission appeal calls us to focus on the Missionary Congregation of the Evangelizing Sisters of Mary. The Evangelizing Sisters of Mary work in desert areas, in wartorn areas & in remote places such as TanzaniaZanzibar, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan & Cuba. The Evangelizing Sisters of Mary work directly with single parents, slum dwellers, desperate youth, street children, refugees, parents & children affected with HIV/Aids. Additionally, they help women & men to create small projects such as sawing, gardening, baking bread & cookies for sale, in order to help them feed their families, pay for their medical expenses, & pay tuition for their children to get a basic education. Please generously support the wonderful work being done by the Evangelizing Sisters of Mary. Donations can be made by placing a check in the regular weekend collection basket or by mail to the Parish Office. Checks should be made out to the parish, with the memo line reading Parish Mission Appeal. Thank you in advance for your charitable support. Mary went to help her cousin Elizabeth who was with child. While still in Elizabeth’s womb, John the Bap- tist recognized Jesus hidden in the womb of Mary, the first tabernacle of the Lord. We now recognize Jesus hidden in the Eucharist. With each Hail Mary we pray for charity to love God and others.” ~The Eucharistic Rosary “The Bread of Life will help the body as well as the soul, if we but touch the hem of His garment . .and how much more have we than that. • Venerable Edel Quinn
Venerable Edel Quinn Edel Quinn was born in Kanturk, Co. Cork, Ireland on September 14th, 1907. As a girl, her desire was to enter a Contemplative Convent, but she was prevented from doing so by ill health. At the age of 20, Edel Quinn joined the Legion of Mary in Dublin and gave herself entirely to its apostolate. In 1932, she became seriously ill and spent a long period in hospital. Edel later resumed her Legion work, though with her health permanently impaired. Edel Quinn was appointed Legion of Mary Envoy with the commission to establish the organization in the vast territories of East and Central Africa. She encountered great obstacles in this pioneering work. As against every difficulty and her wretched health, Edel Quinn brought to her task an absolute faith in God's love and a limitless trust in the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin. Edel Quinn was gifted with a clear practical mind, notable organizing ability, an indomitable will, a deep fund of warm, human sympathy and an infectious joyousness of spirit that never failed her. Everyone who knew her, including her parents, her three sisters and a brother, describe Edel as having been totally unselfish, giving herself to others without consideration of herself. Edel had a concern for everyone and shared in their sufferings, but never revealed her own. She was truly patient in her suffering, which was considerable, but she never gave evidence of pain or worriment. She was always cheerful, even when she was in intense pain or extreme discomfort. She was known for her joy and for her love of jokes as much as she was for her holiness.

HOMILY ON THE OCCASION OF THE CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF THE BIRTH OF THE SERVANT OF GOD, VENERABLE EDEL QUINN AT OUR LADY’S SHRINE AT KNOCK, Co. MAYO ON 30 TH SEPTEMBER 2007. PEACE BE WITH YOU. Dear friends we are gathered today to praise God the creator on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of servant of God venerable Edel Mary Quinn. We are gathered at this shrine to celebrate the mystery of our redemption through the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We have also congregated here to affirm the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives as Christians and believers. Out of her 37 years, eight were spent as a Missionary of the Legion of Mary in Kenya. It is for this reason that I feel privileged to be honoured to be the main celebrant during this Mass. I bring with greetings and prayers from all the Christians of the Archdiocese of Nairobi and all the Legionaries of the Senatus of Kenya. I want to thank the Concilium Officers for facilitating this pilgrimage for me and the Spiritual Director of the Senatus of Kenya. The Legion of Mary in Kenya. The Apostolate of the Legion of Mary is very dear to us in Kenya and in particular to the Archdiocese of Nairobi. Little was it known that the small group founded by Frank Duff on that beautiful evening on September 7th, 1921 as a new impetus in the Church was to extend her tentacles all over the world! The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic organization at the service of the Church, under ecclesiastical guidance.

  • Allocutio Concilium Por Fr. Bede Mcgregor O.P.

FRANK DUFF-THE SPIRITUALITY OF A LAYMAN MICHAEL O'CARROLL, DUBLIN The spiritual outlook of Frank Duff was formed from two sources: experience and the teaching of others. It wasfrom a rather exceptiona!'experience in his case. So we should look at the main facts of his life, the phases through which he worked and thought his way. St. Augustine, who loved interpreting numbers, would have delayed on the importance of "7" in Frank Duff's case. He was born on 7 June, 1889; he founded the Legion of Mary on 7 September, 1921; he died on 7 November, 1980.1 It was a long span of time, but (I am in a position to testify) the man's mental powers were unimpaired to the very end. I met him for the first time in 1937; I attended a meeting of the Pauline Circle, an inter-faith group, where he spoke-and with some vigour-three days before he died.

In his immense desire to share this insight with others and in filial dependence on Mary he formed her Legion to be a sign of her maternal love for the world and a means of enlisting all her children in the Church's evangelizing work. We thank you Father for the graces conferred on him and for the benefits accruing to the Church from his courageous and shining faith. Ephemerides Carmeliticae 17 (1966/1-2) 477-490 EDEL QUINN LAY APOSTLE AND MISSIONARY IN THE CHURCH OF TODAY S u m m a r iu m . - Edel Quinn, iuvenis hibernica nostri temporis (1907-1944) considerari potest sub multiplied aspectu ut exemplum apostoli et missionarii laici. Vita et spiritualitas eius in mysterio Ecclesiae Corporis Mystici — cardine totius organizations apostolicae « Legionis Mariae» — veluti resumuntur. Labor apostolicus, primum in Hibernia et Anglia dein in Africa, fuit ma gnum servitium Ecclesiae praestitum; etenim « signa temporis» praevidens Iaicos apostolos ubique suscitavit efformavitque. Ipsa ergo ut apostolus missionarius et apostolorum efformatrix est donum Dei pro Ecclesia hodierna, quam virtutibus illustrat et peculiari charismate ditat. Each epoch has its saints, raised up by the Lord in His Church and endowed by the Holy Spirit with a special mission. They bring a clear message from Heaven to their fellowmen and are given a particular work to do according to the needs of the times. To them is confided the work of preparing the means of interior reform at the cross-roads of history and pointing out the way to genuine re newal. Among the heroines of sanctity our own days, we must count Edel Mary Quinn. This young Irish woman consumed her existence in the heart of East Africa, as an Envoy of the Legion of Mary. Her life, a veritable poem of heroism, is a compelling example of the lay and missionary apostolate, and is all the more attractive be cause of the spirit of joviality and absolute self-forgetfulness which characterized her. The fame of sanctity which surrounds Edel Quinn has reach ed far beyond the bounds of the Legion of Mary and her native counttry, and is already truly worldwide.
