CHF 2500 Jost Amman’s famous book of coat-of-arms in its rare first edition, published before its German translation (Stam- und Wapenbuch). The illustrations are generally family arms on the versos, and allegories, mythological figures, social types, etc., on the rectos. The allegorical interpretations of both are by the historian Philipp Lonitzer (-1599), a brother of the physician and botanist Adam Lonitzer. The last 14 p. before the colophon have blank shields, four to a page. The preceding 40 p. mostly have full-page blank shields with figures, alternating with allegorical figures, both without text. The woodcuts are by Jost Amman (some signed IA) and other artists represented by the initials MF, LF, MB, MT(?), CS. The History of Modern Painting Volume 2 by Richard Muther The History Of Modern Painting BOOK III THE TRIUMPH OF THE MODERNS CHAPTER XVI THE DRAUGHTSMEN INASMUCH as modern art, in the beginning of its career, held commerce almost exclusively with the spirits of dead men of bygone ages, it had set itself in opposition to all the great epochs that had gone before. All works known to the history of art, from the cathedral pictures of Stephan Lochner down to the works of the followers of Watteau, stand in the closest relationship with the people and times amid which they have originated. Whoever studies the works of Dürer knows his home and his family, the Nuremberg of the sixteenth century, with its narrow lanes and gabled houses; the whole age is reflected in the engravings of this one artist with a truth and distinctness which put to shame those of the most laborious historian. Dürer and his contemporaries in Italy stood in so intimate a relation to reality that in their religious pictures they even set themselves above historical probability, and treated the miraculous stories of sacred tradition as if they had been commonplace incidents of the fifteenth century. Or, to take another instance, with what a striking realism, in the works of Ostade, Brouwer, and Steen, has the entire epoch from which these great artists drew strength and nourishment remained vivid in spirit, sentiment, manners, and costume. Every man whose name has come down to posterity stood firm and unshaken on the ground of his own time, resting like a tree with all its roots buried in its own peculiar soil; a tree whose branches rustled in the breeze of its native land, while the sun which fell on its blossoms and ripened its fruits was that of Italy or Germany, of Spain or the Netherlands, of that time; never the weak reflection of a planet that formerly had shone in other zones. -
The Academy of Athens

Friedrich Overbeck's 'Portrait'
AUF DEN SPUREN DER NAZARENER: Re-reading Vittoria Caldoni: Friedrich Overbeck’s ‘Portrait’ in the Neue Pinakothek by Charles Davis One of the indubitable masterpieces of the somewhat uneven collection of paintings displayed in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich is Johann Friedrich Overbeck’s seemingly perfect Vittoria Caldoni. During a recent Sunday morning visit to the museum, undertaken with the intention of looking at the Nazarene paintings in the collection, the portrait of Vittoria Caldoni exercised its curious fascination, and, as pictures often do, it appeared increasingly puzzling upon prolonged inspection. Only much later did I come across Keith Andrews’s conclusion to his brief commentary upon this painting in his seminal book of 1964, The Nazarenes, a work instrumental in reviving a more widespread interest in these long-neglected and often disparaged painters. Of Overbeck’s Vittoria Caldoni, the author writes: “The frontal disposition draws the spectator into the picture and forces him, intentionally, to seek a meaning beyond mere portrait representation” (pp. 113-114). Nowhere does Andrews enlarge upon what this ‘meaning’ might be, but nevertheless his observation, if inadvertently, corresponds to the agendum of the present essay. Although a book published in 2011 by the Akademie Verlag in Berlin describes Andrews as a ‘Scottish scholar’ and a ‘non-German art historian’, it might be remembered that he was born as Kurt Aufrichtig in Hamburg on 11 October 1920. 2 Friedrich Overbeck, Vittoria Caldoni, 1821. Some years ago, a chance meeting with my collaborator elicited the mutual query: "Have you a copy of Fagan's Collectors' Marks?" We had reference to a little volume compiled and pub- lished at London in 1883, containing 671 'marks," and designated in Bourcard's Bibliography as "de toute rarete." We agreed that this excellent compendium deserved a place of honor in the literature of the Collector, and that the task of bringing it to more general notice was well worth the labor. As we ourselves had included this volume among our chief "desiderata," we believed that it would be esteemed by collectors generally, and therefore we decided to reprint the original and subjoin an appendix of the more recent "marks." Plans were developed for the publica- tion, correspondence was initiated with foreign museums, collectors and dealers, when, in an evil hour, the war supervened. Thereupon, the restrictions of censorship operated to place an embargo on all communications containing "marks" and ciphers, with the result that our appendix can be offered only in its fragmentary and incomplete state. -
