Wantage c.3miles Oxford c.16.4miles M4 J14 c.11.3miles Didcot Rail c.11.9miles Oxford c16.4miles Abingdon c.12.1miles White's Farm House is a gorgeous Grade 2 Listed, late 16th Century farm- house set on the edge of Letcombe Bassett, a small picturesque Downland village nestling below the Ridgeway and referred to in Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure as Cresscombe. The grounds of approximately 3.5 acres include outbuildings, two historic Grade 2 listed barns (with consent for conversion to dwellings) and a chalk stream with tranquil watercress beds for which the village was once so re- nowned that the cry "Bassett Cress!" would ring out in markets as far away as Old Covent Garden, London. The house has been in the same family for almost 60 years and has a welcoming charm and natural warmth that comes from decades of being a much loved family home.

In the 1970s a priest hole was discovered in the central Downland chalk- stone chimney along with a primer in Latin dated 1631. The book was in good condition and carried annotations from a previous reader. White's Farm's beautiful gardens were based on designs by Col John Co- drington, soldier, diplomat, alleged spy and garden designer celebrated for his work at Emmanuel College Cambridge and Penshurst Place in Kent. The family still have the original water colour paintings of the designs created by Col Codrington, showing views of the garden before and after, a technique employed by the famous C18th landscape designer Humphry Repton. The owner, a plant physiologist and knowledgeable plantsman, started creating these remarkable and spectacular gardens in the 1960's with his wife and family as a place for fun and adventure, as a tranquil idyll for visitors and as a beautiful space situated in and connecting with he Downs though borrowed views'. The gardens were open for several years under the National Garden's scheme.
