It is a memorable live action moment from the Steven Spielberg motion picture, which widened our view of what is real and what is make believe. Spielberg’s scene was taken from Michael Crichton’s best selling novel, set on an imaginary island off the shore of the Central American nation of Costa Rica. But it was shot on the island of Kauai, in the Hawaiian archipelago. The picture grossed $920 million. Outsized creatures, of course, were not new to the movies or to Hawaii when Spielberg's velociraptors were running wild on Kauai and Oahu. Dino deLaurentis and Paramount had filmed the Jessica Lange remake of King Kong on Kauai's Na Pali Coast in 1976. In 1997, Disney remade Mighty Joe Young against the backdrop of the Kaaawa Valley, demonstrating for the umpteenth time that Hawaii does a beautiful job of standing in for Equatorial Africa. And TriStar used rural areas of Honolulu County as Tahiti, Panama, and Jamaica for a new Godzilla.

Petersen Date: 15 October 2019 Article Number: 319-2019-17 Besides Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune and most all Sports, the two regular TV shows I like to watch are NCIS and Criminal Minds. I decided to write this article about someone from these shows and I picked Mark Harmon because I find his life to be the most interesting. Family Thomas Mark Harmon was born in Burbank, California on September 2, 1951, which makes him 68 years old. He was the youngest of three children. His parents were Heisman Trophy–winning football player and broadcaster Tom Harmon and actress, model, artist, and fashion designer Elyse Knox. Harmon’s two older sisters are the late actress and painter Kristin Nelson, who was divorced from the late singer Rick Nelson, and actress and model Kelly Harmon, formerly married to car magnate John DeLorean. Yes, Mark’s dad was a famous football player at the Mark Harmon’s Parents University of Michigan. He played the halfback position Tom Harmon and wife from 1938 to 1940. He led the nation in scoring and was Elyse Knox a consensus All-American in both 1939 and 1940 and won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Associated Press Athlete of the Year award in 1940. His nickname was "Old 98" which I find somewhat unusual for a halfback! He played in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams for a couple of seasons. He was also a military pilot and a sports broadcaster. He died at age 70 in Los Angeles.

    Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen.
