Box 2359 | Honolulu, HI 96804 | Phone (808) 586-2570 | Fax (808) 586-2572 | [email protected] Hawaii’s Film & Television Legacy __________________________ More than a century of Made-in-Hawaii films and television shows. The sleek helicopter began its descent against a backdrop of breathtaking tropical mountains and rain forests, finally hovering in the face of a plunging waterfall, then settling on the landing pad of Jurassic Park. It is a memorable live action moment from the Steven Spielberg motion picture, which widened our view of what is real and what is make believe. Spielberg’s scene was taken from Michael Crichton’s best selling novel, set on an imaginary island off the shore of the Central American nation of Costa Rica. But it was shot on the island of Kauai, in the Hawaiian archipelago. The picture grossed $920 million. Outsized creatures, of course, were not new to the movies or to Hawaii when Spielberg's velociraptors were running wild on Kauai and Oahu. Dino deLaurentis and Paramount had filmed the Jessica Lange remake of King Kong on Kauai's Na Pali Coast in 1976. In 1997, Disney remade Mighty Joe Young against the backdrop of the Kaaawa Valley, demonstrating for the umpteenth time that Hawaii does a beautiful job of standing in for Equatorial Africa. And TriStar used rural areas of Honolulu County as Tahiti, Panama, and Jamaica for a new Godzilla.

  • New on Video &
New On Video & DVD Yes Man Jim Carrey returns to hilarious form with this romantic comedy in the same vein as the Carrey classic Liar Liar. After a few stints in more serious features like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Number 23, Carrey seems right at home playing Carl, a divorcé who starts out the film depressed and withdrawn, scared of taking a risk. Pressured by his best friend, Peter (Bradley Cooper), to get his act together or be stuck with a lonely life, Carl attends a New Age self-help seminar intended to change "no men" like Carl into "yes men" willing to meet life's challenges with gusto. Carl is reluctant at first, but finds the seminar to be ultimately life-changing when he's coerced into giving the "say yes" attitude a try. As the first opportunity to say yes presents itself, Carl hesitantly utters the three-letter word, setting the stage for a domino effect of good rewards, and giving Carrey a platform to show off his comic chops. But over time Carl realizes that saying yes to everything indiscriminately can reap results as complicated and messy as his life had become when saying "no" was his norm. The always-quirky Zooey Deschanel adds her signature charm as Carl's love interest, Allison. An unlikely match at first glance, the pair actually develop great chemistry as the story progresses, the actors play- ing off each other's different styles of humor. Rhys Darby also shines as Carl's loveable but clueless boss, and That 70s Show's Danny Masterson appears as another one of Carl's friends.

  • Et Tu, Dude? Humor and Philosophy in the Movies of Joel And
ET TU, DUDE? HUMOR AND PHILOSOPHY IN THE MOVIES OF JOEL AND ETHAN COEN A Report of a Senior Study by Geoffrey Bokuniewicz Major: Writing/Communication Maryville College Spring, 2014 Date approved ___________, by _____________________ Faculty Supervisor Date approved ___________, by _____________________ Division Chair Abstract This is a two-part senior thesis revolving around the works of the film writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen. The first seven chapters deal with the humor and philosophy of the Coens according to formal theories of humor and deep explication of their cross-film themes. Though references are made to most of their films in the study, the five films studied most in-depth are Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, and A Serious Man. The study looks at common structures across both the Coens’ comedies and dramas and also how certain techniques make people laugh. Above all, this is a study on the production of humor through the lens of two very funny writers. This is also a launching pad for a prospective creative screenplay, and that is the focus of Chapter 8. In that chapter, there is a full treatment of a planned script as well as a significant portion of written script up until the first major plot point. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Chapter - Introduction VII I The Pattern Recognition Theory of Humor in Burn After Reading 1 Explanation and Examples 1 Efficacy and How It Could Help Me 12 II Benign Violation Theory in The Big Lebowski and 16 No Country for Old Men Explanation and Examples
