2 WATER ROUTES, WALKING TRAILS AND THE ROUTES OF THE PLACES TO VISIT IN ŠIRVINTOS DISTRICT

WATER ROUTES Spring is the best time for canoeing down the river Musė - one of the most interesting tributaries of the River Nėris and well-known by the lovers of water tourism. Beautiful nature, rollicking stream and a variety of hurdles: the remains of water mills, slashings, and shoals - everything you need to create indelible memories. In summer the river abates and is suitable for canoeing only after huge downpours. River Musė starts its way from the Lake Musia (near the town Glitiškiai, district) and near Čiobiškis fl ows into the River Nėris. If one still has a desire, the trip can be continued down the River Nėris. The most convenient place to start the trip down the River Musė is the 38th km of the highway Vilnius-Ukmergė. Here, at the 31st kilometer from Vilnius, the river goes underneath the bridge. If one has time and desire, he can start a trip at a higher point: from the old road bridge of Širvintos (42nd km), or even from the village Antanėliai (45th km), below of which two little rivulets Tola and Juodė catch up Musė and join into one stream just before the mouth. If you take this route you will visit Bartkuškis Manor, the remains of Bajoriškiai Mill (23 km from the mouth), Barbora Chapel, Grebliaučizna hill-fort, Janioniai hill-fort, Darius and Girėnas Bridge, Čiobiškis Watermill.

3 WATER ROUTES, WALKING TRAILS AND THE ROUTES OF THE PLACES TO VISIT IN ŠIRVINTOS DISTRICT

The trip down the river Širvinta The River Širvinta is the longest and most beautiful tributary of Šventoji, its length - 128 km. Canoeing trips are usually started from the bridges of Širvintos, Viesiai, Družai, Vindeikiai, or Liukoniai, but each group of tourists can choose a segment they like. The length of the entire route from Širvintos to Upninkai is 83.5 km, the duration of the trip - 4 days, canoeing season - from April to September. Canoeists can choose not only 4, but also 3, 2 or 1 day trip. The route runs through the districts of Širvintos, Jonava and Ukmergė. Fellow countryman journalist Petras Naraškevičius in his book ‘Alksniai prie Širvintos’ (Alders near Širvintos) wrote: “the banks of the river are quite high in some places, the river brinks did their best to entangle themselves in trees and bushes, so that a traveler couldn’t make out what is beyond that thick brush, even if he wished to. You fl oat down the river amid beautiful living walls, sometimes hear a mooing cow, sometimes a barking dog or human voices, but not seeing anyone alive on the bank. Only a fi sh splashes near a drowned stump, young beaver swims away leaving a trail of disturbed water, quacking ducks rise from a calm pool or a long-tailed magpie chirps in dense bushes.“ While beyond that indiscernible thick of the trees a lot of sight-worthy things are hiding: Pasodninkai hill-fort, Lapšiai manor (it is a private estate, visits must be agreed in advance with the owners), huge cross and mythological stones of Liukoniai, Maskoliškiai hill-fort, Širvinta Landscape Reserve. Those who wish to see the beautiful and full of surprises curves of the rivers Musė and Širvinta can rent canoes. 4 WATER ROUTES, WALKING TRAILS AND THE ROUTES OF THE PLACES TO VISIT IN ŠIRVINTOS DISTRICT

WALKING TRAILS IN ŠIRVINTOS DISTRICT Kernavė touring-recreational trail ‘Ateik, žmogau, tyla priglausiu’ (Come, I’ll cuddle you with silence) A trail of 2.6 km length, installed by the foresters in Kernavė, near the Baltasis Hill, wanders through the picturesque pinewoods and along the old barrows of the X-XI centuries. The resting places are arranged, the trail is decorated with wood carvings. In order to minimize the impact on the forest, the natural materials were selected for the path coating - gravel, stone grit. When you walk this path a feeling overcomes as the one that is aroused by the poem “The Forest of Anykščiai” by A. Baranauskas: “you hear each leaf and fl ower grow”, you see “from under their blanket shyly peep the chanterelle funnels wakening from sleep”, you feel the harmony and tranquility, smell the fresh air of pinewood. You wish to come back again and again, to get re-acquainted with the pinewood.

ŠIRVINTOS TOWN St. Michael the Archangel‘s Church Vilniaus str. 112, Širvintos. No on the map - 2 The relatives of landlords Astikai, landowners of Paširvintis and Šalkovščizna and sisters Kotryna, Agnieszka and Bogdana in 1475 built the fi rst wooden church. In 1674 Mikalojus Žakas built a new church. The third - masonry - church was built by the eff orts of the priest Viktoras Lupeikis and the parishioners in 1855-1860. Monsignor Priest Juozapas Dabravolskas, which had come to the Širvintos parish in 1986, renovated the church. In 1997 the church windows were decorated with stained glass (auth.K. Kurlianskas). A combination of Classicism and Baroque styles dominate in the Church.

The monument ‘Motina’ (Mother) Vilniaus str. 112, Širvintos. No on the map - 3 Behind the Church, in Vilnius street, Širvintos town, on the 15th of July, 1927 a monument by sculptor Robertas Antinis (senior) was built and sanctifi ed to com- memorate the ten-year anniversary of Lithuania’s Independence. In 1954 the local members of the Communist Youth League smashed and buried the monument in several places. In 1991 sculptor Robert Antinis (junior) built a copy of the original monument. Kneeling mother holding her dying son is placed on a rectangular base, on the front plane of which there is a cross and the reliefs of a shield with the cross and sword of Vytis. The rest of the planes hold the following inscrip- tions: “For those perished in Širvintos / warriors 1919-1922” (southwestward side), “Grateful / countrymen / 1927.VIII.15 (northeastward side), “built in 1927 / Sculptor R. The house where the NKVD (The People’s Commissariat for Internal Aff airs) tortured partisans Vilniaus str 114, Širvintos. No on the map - 5 The NKVD settled in the house of Colonel J. Plenta and tortured the partisans of the Great Battle Command. NKVD-ists used to violate the bodies of the partisans killed in battles or in the NKVD building at the foot of the Independence Monument. This house had (and still does) a rather big basement. Civilians, that off ended the Soviet government, as well as Lithuanian partisans, that were taken alive, used to be kept there. People also used to be imprisoned in the barn near the house. The arrested partisans Juozas Kudelis, Vaclovas Macijauskas, Juozas Bartosevičius and others, whose names, unfortunately, remain unknown so far, were imprisoned here and interrogated.

ALIONIAI SUBDISTRIC Juodiškiai manor Giedraičių str. 17, Juodiškiai village, Širvintos distr. No on the map - 6 The history of Juodiškiai manor dates back to the XVIth century, when this land belonged to Giedraičiai latifundia and administrative zone. In the XVIIth century Juodiškiai manor was purchased by Vladislavas Počobutas Odlianickis and later inherited by his descendants. In the middle of the XVIIIth century the manor was governed by the Monitor of - Ruščicas. The current residential building of the Juodiškiai Manor has inherited the layout structure and the fragments of stonework of the mid-XVIIIth century. The manor has preserved the ‘alkieras’ - reminiscent of ‘towers’, widely spread in the XVIIth century. The household center of Juodiškiai manor was modernized in the fi rst half of the XIXth century by Zigmantas Ruščica. At the time, some of the new outbuildings were built, a brewery. The entire household acquired a unanimous style of Late Classicism, now barely discernible in the remains of sparse details. After Zbignevas Ruščica left the manor, Primary School of Juodiškiai was established here, later Juodiškiai branches of Cultural Center and Public Library. To this day only the landlord house, distillery and ice-cream parlor remain standing.

ČIOBIŠKIS SUBDISTRICT The ferry of Čiobiškis (Padaliai village) No on the map - 8 Čiobiškis is located at the confl uence of the rivers Neris and Musė. It is surrounded by the pinewoods of an amazing beauty. During the summer near Čiobiškis a ferry is available to get across the River Neris.

The ensemble of religious buildings Neris str., Čiobiškis village, Širvintos distr. No on the map - 9 The ensemble of religious buildings was developed in the fi rst quarter of the XIXth century (the church) and in the middle of the XIXth century (the belfries and the chapels). The fi rst wooden church in Čiobiškis was built by Jesuits in the XVIITH century. The masonry church was started in 1810 at the landowner’s E. Švikauskienė expense. The church was built by the new owner of Čiobiškis Jonas Krizostomas Pilsudskis in 1825. The author of the project is unknown (there were presumptions that it was built according to the project of Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius). The walls of the church are broken down by the pilasters. In the main facade, near the entrance, between the pilasters, the niches are inserted and fi lled with wooden statues of the Evangelists of the XVIIIth century. On the inside of the church there are paintings of the Holy Apostles of the XIXth century, the portrait of church founder Jonas Krizostomas Pilsudskis. Čiobiškis church ensemble is perhaps the only one in Lithuania that has two same belfries of the XIXth century. They were built in the further corners of the churchyard. The belfries are of the Late Classicist style, eloquent and refi ned. The belfry of the north-east corner of the churchyard was dedicated to the clock, the one of the south-east corner – to the three bells. Besides, it is a rare case that a sanctum of a small village had an expensive clock mechanism as the one installed in one of the belfries. This in a way reminds the distant Magdeburgian past of Čiobiškis.

Čiobiškis Manor Vilties str. 1, Čiobiškis village, Širvintos distr. No on the map - 10 In the XVIIIth century Čiobiškis manor belonged to Švikauskai. In 1794 Jonas Krizostomas Pilsudskis bought the estate from them. The manor was designed by architect L. Stuoka-Gucevičius. The majority of the classicist buildings were built in the beginning of the XIXth century. After the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, children’s shelter was established in the ensemble. After the World War II, it turned into a special boarding school; new buildings were added, which destroyed the compositional unity of the ensemble. The manor is composed of the four remaining buildings of the manor times (the mansion, house for farm laborers, stables, and ice cream parlor) and the remains of the greenery. The ensemble of the manor formed in the mid-XIXth century and is ascribed to the period of Late Classicism. The mansion has the highest architectural value of all ensemble buildings, it is a distinctive and rare example of mansions with fl at portico in the Classicism architecture of Lithuania. 7 WATER ROUTES, WALKING TRAILS AND THE ROUTES OF THE PLACES TO VISIT IN ŠIRVINTOS DISTRICT

No on the map - 12 At the center of Gelvonai stands a tower-less neoclassical church with the shapes of Neo-Baroque style. The walls are of stone masonry combined with the details of red brick. In the churchyard stands a XIXth century chapel with a fi tted-in stone of 90x36 cm size with a mark resembling human foot. It is told that in ancient times, when the place was surrounded by dense woods, the Mother of God appeared in front of a woman passing by at night. When the vision vanished, the woman noticed a footmark stamped on the stone. The woods were cut around that place and a stone chapel was built there. In the churchyard There is a crypt of Counts Pliateriai.

High land) that partly preserved its original structure and uniqueness to this day. The village is called street- planned because homesteads were built on land strips that braced against the road or crossed it vertically, sometimes slightly sideways. The plans and space structures typical of ‘valakinis’ (valakas – land measuring unit of about 20 ha) countryside of the mid- XVIth century as well as living houses and some outbuildings of the fi rst half of XIX-XX centuries characteristic to Central Lithuania have survived. The homesteads are lined up along the street one alongside another. There are 6 monumental homesteads in the village, which contain 14 monumental buildings: 5 country living houses, 5 granaries, 1 living house with granary, 1 cowshed, 1 barn, 1 yard kitchen, and 6 solitary monumental houses. The street of the village is straight, of 700 m length and 8 m width, surrounded by tall old deciduous trees; it links the Gelvonai- Musninkai and Gelvonai-Čiobiškis roads. Later a distillery was built, its warehouse, cowshed, second cowshed (not survived). Later the manor went to the ownership of Gustavas Pliateris, who in 1913 sold the estate to the well-known lawyer from Warsaw, the fi rst envoy of Russian Duma, Aleksandras Lednickis (Pl. KERNAVĖ SUBDISTRICT Kernavė Archaeological Site No on the map - 17 Archeological site of Kernavė is a unique territorial complex of archaeological and historical valuables. The well-preserved archaeological monuments of Kernavė environs cover all epochs - all archaeological cultures that existed in this region. Cultural layers of prehistoric settlements, burial grounds, and the heritage of the medieval times have remained almost intact to this day. The traces of the fi rst inhabitants (the late Paleolithic hunters) – the fl int arrowheads of the Swiderian culture discovered in the Pajauta Valley - are dated back to the XIXth millennium BC. The warming climate and the convenient place to live determined that the Pajauta Valley remained inhabited since the VIIIth millennium BC. Since the middle of the Ist millennium AD Kernavė settlement rapidly developed and in the XIIIth century had become one of the fi rst cities in Lithuania – the ancient center of Lithuanian Statehood. In the written sources Kernavė was mentioned for the fi rst time in 1279, in the rhymed Livonian and Herman Wartberge’s Chronicles, as the land of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Traidenis (1269-1282). The medieval heritage – the cultural layers of the town and the hill-forts are closely related to the important events in the history of Lithuania and to the specifi c dates. From the cultural perspective, the heritage of the medieval Kernavė is important as a phenomenon of the urban culture of the last pagan state in Europe. In 2004 the State Cultural Reserve of Kernavė was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, thus the signifi cance of this area was recognized. In the territory of the Cultural Reserve (of 194.4 ha.) the entire complex of the cultural heritage is preserved, which currently consists of 18 known and validated archaeological, historical and cultural valuables. Since 1999 the festivals of Experimental Archaeology ‘Days of Live Archaeology in Kernavė’ are organized in the area to commemorate the King Mindaugas Coronation Day - Lithuania State Day. The museum is equipped with an educational class-workshop, where theoretical and practical sessions of the program ‘Live Archaeology - Journey to the Past’ are held. Since 1967 the traditional summer solstice festival ‘Rasos šventė’ has been organized in Kernavė.
