The new atmospheric entry guidance system resulted in an orbit determination paradigm shift during final approach when compared to previous Mars lander missions. The evolving orbit determination filter strategies during cruise are presented. Furthermore, results of calibration activities of dynamical models are presented. The atmospheric entry interface trajectory knowledge was significantly better than the original requirements, which enabled the very precise landing in Gale Crater. Introduction On August 6, 2012, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) and the Curiosity rover successful performed a precision landing in Gale Crater on Mars. A crucial part of the success was orbit determination (OD) during the cruise from Earth to Mars. The OD process involves determining the spacecraft state, predicting the future trajectory and characterizing the uncertainty associated with the predicted trajectory. This paper describes the orbit determination process, results, and unique challenges during the final approach phase. -

The Journey to Mars: How Donna Shirley Broke Barriers for Women in Space Engineering Laurel Mossman, Kate Schein, and Amelia Peoples Senior Division Group Documentary Word Count: 499 Our group chose the topic, Donna Shirley and her Mars rover, because of our connections and our interest level in not only science but strong, determined women. One of our group member’s mothers worked for a man under Ms. Shirley when she was developing the Mars rover. This provided us with a connection to Ms. Shirley, which then gave us the amazing opportunity to interview her. In addition, our group is interested in the philosophy of equality and we have continuously created documentaries that revolve around this idea. Every member of our group is a female, so we understand the struggles and discrimination that women face in an everyday setting and wanted to share the story of a female that faced these struggles but overcame them. Thus after conducting a great amount of research, we fell in love with Donna Shirley’s story. Lastly, it was an added benefit that Ms. Shirley is from Oklahoma, making her story important to our state. All of these components made this topic extremely appealing to us. We conducted our research using online articles, Donna Shirley’s autobiography, “Managing Martians”, news coverage from the launch day, and our interview with Donna Shirley. We started our research process by reading Shirley’s autobiography. This gave us insight into her college life, her time working at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and what it was like being in charge of such a barrier-breaking mission. -

InSight: RIVIER ACADEMIC JOURNAL, VOLUME 14, NUMBER 1, FALL 2018 EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE: Meet Kevin Gill ‘11G Michelle Marrone (From Rivier Today, Fall 2018) From the comfort of his lab chair in sunny, southern California, Kevin Gill ’11G has a view into outer space. As a Science Data Software Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), he spends his time planning and designing technology in support of environmental science and space exploration, as well as data visualization and planetary imaging. His recent work not only produced the first-ever close views of Saturn, but also contributed to NASA’s team winning an Emmy Award. Kevin earned his M.S. in Computer Science at Rivier and has been designing software to render the unique images he gathers ever since. He used an algorithm he developed during his program at Rivier to generate hypothetical images portraying Mars as a vibrant planet with oceans, an oxygen-rich atmosphere, and a green biosphere. The images went viral and within a week his work was featured on major media networks—Discovery News, Fox News, Universe Today, and the Huffington Post. His work captured NASA’s attention and paved the way for his career move. “Rivier taught me many of the algorithms and development practices I still use today at NASA,” says Kevin. “In fact, I can trace the lineage of code currently running on NASA systems directly to my final master’s project at the University.” The systems and tools he develops support a range of scientists specializing in the areas of climate, oceanography, asteroids, planetary science, and others. -

January 15, 2006 Five Aerojet Boosters Set to Lift New Horizons Spacecraft Aerojet Propulsion Will Support Both Launch Vehicle and Spacecraft for Mission to Pluto SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Aerojet, a GenCorp Inc. (NYSE: GY) company, will provide five solid rocket boosters for the launch vehicle and a propulsion system for the spacecraft when a Lockheed Martin Atlas® V launches the Pluto New Horizons spacecraft January 17 from Cape Canaveral, AFB. The launch window opens at 1:24 p.m. EST on January 17 and extends through February 14. The New Horizons mission, dubbed by NASA as the "first mission to the last planet," will study Pluto and its moon, Charon, in detail during a five-month- long flyby encounter. Pluto is the solar system's most distant planet, averaging 3.6 billion miles from the sun. Aerojet's solid rocket boosters (SRBs), each 67-feet long and providing an average of 250,000 pounds of thrust, will provide the necessary added thrust for the New Horizons mission. The SRBs have flown in previous vehicle configurations using two and three boosters; this is the first flight utilizing the five boosters. Additionally, 12 Aerojet monopropellant (hydrazine) thrusters on the Atlas V Centaur upper stage will provide roll, pitch, and yaw control settling burns for the launch vehicle main engines. Aerojet also supplies 8 retro rockets for Atlas Centaur separation. Aerojet also provided the spacecraft propulsion system, comprised of a propellant tank, 16 thrusters and various other components, which will control pointing and navigation for the spacecraft on its journey and during encounters with Pluto- Charon and, as part of a possible extended mission, to more distant, smaller objects in the Kuiper Belt. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

In the course of this plan some anomalies have been found that cannot, in principle, be explained in the context of the most accurate orbital models including all known effects from classical dynamics and general relativity. Of particular interest for its puzzling nature, and the lack of any accepted explanation for the moment, is the flyby anomaly discov- ered in some spacecraft flybys of the Earth over the course of twenty years. This anomaly manifest itself as the impossibility of matching the pre and post-encounter Doppler tracking and ranging data within a single orbit but, on the contrary, a difference of a few mm/s in the asymptotic velocities is required to perform the fitting. We list the scores for the 2308 public ratings in NA that are within the scope of our corporate methodology, accompanied by charts that show the distribution of aggregated scores. We believe that the list and charts enhance benchmarking across industries and rating levels for all market participants. We disclose these scores in line with the information we provide in our rating research publications, such as research updates and full analyses. By releasing all scores for public corporate ratings in NA, S&P Global Ratings confirms its commitment to deliver greater transparency and insight into the ratings process and simplify access for all market participants. Ratings are organized alphabetically by industry sector. The scores reflect the building blocks of the corporate ratings framework (see chart 1). Modifiers and components related to our group rating methodology or government-related entity methodology are indicated only where they have a positive or negative effect on the rating. The report reflects corporate credit ratings and scores as of Oct. 31, 2020. This document will not be updated for future rating actions or score revisions. To keep it concise, the list only discloses scores for the main rated entity of larger corporate groups. ELOY – „The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre“ (Part 1) Interview mit Frank Bornemann Frage1: Ein großes Konzeptwerk zum Thema Jeanne d´Arc schwebt Dir ja schon lange vor. Geäußert hast Du das schon zu Beginn der Neunziger Jahre. Warum hast Du solange damit gezögert? Frank: Weil es aus Zeitgründen einfach nie möglich war, mich früher in angemessener Weise so einer komplexen Aufgabe zu widmen. In den Neunzigern hatte ich als Produzent noch zahlreiche Auftragsproduktionen im eigenen Studio zu machen, entweder für diverse Plattenfirmen oder unseren Verlag. Zudem stand mit dem Album „The Tides return forever“ bei ELOY die Reunion von einer nunmehr wieder kompletten Band und eine Anniversary-Tour an, sowie der immer wieder glühend verlangte Nachfolger von „Ocean“, den unser damals neues Label GUN/BMG unbedingt haben wollte. In den 2000 er Jahren sah es mit Freiräumen für so ein großes Werk kaum besser aus. Allein, um in diesen Jahren beginnender Marktrezession als Produzent und Studioinhaber bestehen zu können, habe ich ohne Punkt und Komma viele Bands und Künstler produziert, und konnte erst am Ende dieses besonders turbulenten Jahrzehnts wieder daran denken, mich eigener Musik zu widmen. Frage2: Warum dann erst „Visionary“, und nicht gleich Jeanne d´Arc ? Frank: Weil ich zunächst unserer Fancommunity, die selbst nach dieser Riesenpause von 10 Jahren noch immer so vehement hinter der Band stand, sofort erst einmal wieder ein Bandalbum in Originalbesetzung präsentieren wollte, welches sich im Vergleich zu einer Rock Opera in kürzerer Zeit umsetzen ließ. Quasi als Antwort auf diese enorme Fantreue, aber auch als Dankesgeste für die bemerkenswerte Wertschätzung, die ELOY aus allen Teilen der Welt entgegen gebracht wird. -
