Just when you think you know what kind of story it is, it turns that notion on its head, and the surprising places it takes you are exciting. Nick Spencer does a fantastic job of introducing these characters. It's like the writer Nick Spencer just watched "Ocean's 11" and woke up thinking he imagined it all. The story, dialog, and art are crisp and this book reads like a damn movie. The setup is more than a little convoluted, but it all is necessary to make sense in the end and that it wasn't quite compelling enough to have me completely hold my interest, that's a major knock against it. But neither will I turn my nose up at it. I did not like the colors -- Technicolor, Photoshop-y. But it's a pleasure to read Conrad's shenanigans especially towards the end of the book. There is character development and the characters actually move from point A to point B. And I think the transition between writers went pretty smoothly. An excellent heist type caper book featuring an experienced thief, perhaps the best there is as he is trying to get out of his old life and patch up relationships he's lost because of his work.     1 From The Newgate Calendar to Sherlock Holmes Heather Worthington In Arthur Conan Doyle ’ s fi rst Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet (1887), Dr Watson is introduced to Holmes by Stamford, an ex - colleague from Bart ’ s (St Bartholomew’ s Hospital, London). Stamford and Watson fi nd Holmes conducting an experiment which, he declares, will reliably identify bloodstains. Such a discovery would have proved the guilt of any number of murderers, he tells them: “ Von Bischoff … Mason … Muller … Lefevre … Samson … I could name a score of cases in which it would have been decisive. ” Stamford responds by saying that Holmes seems “ to be a walking calendar of crime ” (Doyle 1986 : 1.8), using “ calendar ” to mean a list or directory and admiring Holmes ’ s encyclopedic knowledge of criminal biography. But the word is also applicable to the list of prisoners for trial at an assizes and it is in this sense that, in the eighteenth century, the title “ The Newgate Calendar ” came into being. DOI: 10.22148/16.005 The concept of genre is as old as literary theory itself, but centuries of debate haven’t produced much consensus on the topic.1 Part of the reason is that genre looks like a different thing at different points in the life of a text. Scholars of rhetoric tend to focus on the patterns of communicative action that produce memoranda or tragedies. 2 Sociologists are sometimes more interested in institu- tions that organize reception. 3 Literary scholars, for their part, have traditionally been preoccupied with the patterning of the texts themselves.     Manga Bibliography Unlike Western Graphic Novels which generally follow the narrative tradition found in written literature, Manga stories are written because the authors (or Manga-ka) have a targeted audience they would like to reach and some stock characters they would like to present. In Manga, the characters are created first for a specific audience. Those characters are then used to tell stories which (the Manga-ka hopes) are of interest to the targeted audience. Therefore, a good way to divide the broad world of Manga into manageable genres is to first determine the audience type, then establish the theme of the stories or the special characteristics of the protagonists. Because of this focus on the intended audience, the most common launching platform for manga stories is in periodicals intended for specific audiences. The bibliography which follows will highlight some of the leading magazines aimed at each type of audience as well as give examples of some of the more popular stories which have gained enough of a following to take on a life of their own and be published as stand-alone (often serialized) works called “tankobon”.
