Kempthorne has not listed a single species as endangered during the 472 days he has served as secretary, the center said, thereby passing the previous record held by former Interior Secretary James Watt, who placed no plants or animals on the endangered species list for 376 days during his term between 1981 and 1982. "Kempthorne is eminently deserving of the first annual Rubber Dodo award," said Kieran Suckling, policy director for the center, which established the award. "His refusal to protect a single imperiled species in more than 15 months gives him the worst record of any interior secretary in the history of the Endangered Species Act. His policies should go the way of the dodo as soon as possible." The award is named for the dodo bird, a three-foot-tall, flightless bird discovered on the uninhabited island of Mauritius by Dutch sailors in 1598. Within less than a century, the bird had been wiped out -- hunted by humans and other animals it had before never encountered nor developed a natural fear of. HUME Bird Group, Department of Life Sciences, The Natural History Museum, Tring, UK Abstract — The isolated Mascarene Islands of Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues are situated in the south- western Indian Ocean. All are volcanic in origin and have never been connected to each other or any other land mass. Despite their comparatively close proximity to each other, each island differs topographically and the islands have generally distinct avifaunas. The Mascarenes remained pristine until recently, resulting in some documentation of their ecology being made before they rapidly suffered severe degradation by humans. The first major fossil discoveries were made in 1865 on Mauritius and on Rodrigues and in the late 20th century on Réunion. However, for both Mauritius and Rodrigues, the documented fossil record initially was biased toward larger, non-passerine bird species, especially the dodo Raphus cucullatus and solitaire Pezophaps solitaria. This paper provides a synopsis of the fossil Mascarene avifauna, which demonstrates that it was more diverse than previously realised. Therefore, as the islands have suffered severe anthropogenic changes and the fossil record is far from complete, any conclusions based on present avian biogeography must be viewed with caution. ALISTAIR CROMBIE Copyright © The British Academy 1998 – all rights reserved Alistair Cameron Crombie 1915–1996 ALISTAIR CAMERON CROMBIE, one of the most influential historians of science of his generation, died at his home in Oxford on 9 February 1996. He was born on 4 November 1915 in Brisbane, Australia, the second son of William David Crombie and Janet Wilmina (nee´ Macdonald), both of Scottish extraction. His grandparents had made the move from farms in Scotland to very remote properties in Queensland, where they raised sheep in truly pioneering circumstances. From the beginning they were heavily dependent on the vagaries of the weather, and there is one family story of how their fate on the original trek had hung in the balance, depending entirely on their success in locating a river, which they managed to do with very little time to spare. By the time Alistair Crombie was born, the sheep stations were prospering. After school at Geelong Grammar School, he began his uni- versity career at Trinity College, Melbourne University, as a medical student, and took his first degree there in zoology in 1938. Most of his adult life, however, was spent in England, and more than half of it in Oxford. Leaving Melbourne, he continued his studies at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he took his doctorate in 1942 with a dissertation on population dynamics—a fact that explains his lifelong interest in the history of Darwinism. In a survey of the history of insect ecology by H. G. Andrewaka and L. C. Birch, his zoological work from this period is said to have greatly stimulated other research on interspecific competition. -

The Cultural Impact of Science in the Early Twentieth Century
In the early decades of the twentieth century, engagement with science was commonly used as an emblem of modernity. Its first champion was Robert T. Gunther, the son of a keeper of zoology at the British Museum and a graduate of Magdalen College who took a first there in the School of Natural Science in 1892, specializing in zoology (figure 1). As tutor in natural science at Magdalen (and subsequently a fellow) from 1894 until his retirement in 1920, at the age of 50, Gunther showed himself to be a fighter, both for the cause of science in the university and for the preservation of Oxford’s scientific heritage. His first work, A history of the Daubeny Laboratory (1904), reflected his devotion to the memory of the laboratory’s founder and Magdalen’s greatest man of science, Charles Daubeny, who had held chairs of chemistry, botany and rural economy at various times, for long periods simultaneously, between 1822 and his death in 1867.1 Supplements, bearing the main title The Daubeny Laboratory register, followed in 1916 and 1924,2 but it was Gunther’s Early science in Oxford, published in 14 substantial volumes between 1920 and 1945, that signalled his definitive move from science to history.3 World War I brought home to Gunther the vulnerability of Oxford’s scientific collections, in particular the many early instruments that survived, largely disregarded, in the colleges.
