(Pindar) Water. There's too much of it, or too little. It's too salty, or too sweet. It wells up from the ground, carves itself a way through the land, and then it's called a river or a stream. It descends from the heavens in a variety of forms - as dew or hail, to mention just the extremes. And then, of course, there is the all-encompassing water which we call the sea, and which reminds us of the beginning of all things. The English once labelled the Netherlands across the North Sea ‘this indigested vomit of the sea’. But the Dutch went to work on that vomit, systematically and stubbornly: ‘... their tireless hands manufactured this land, / drained it and trained it and planed it and planned’ (James Brockway). As God's subcontractors they gradually became experts in living apart together. Look carefully at the first photo. The water has struck again. We're talking 1926. Gelderland. The small, stocky woman visiting the stricken province is Queen Wilhelmina. Without turning a hair she allows herself to be carried over the waters. -

Leunissen May 2015 DALMI Working Paper No. 15231 The Artistic Migration Between Mechelen and Delft (1550–1625) Fiene Leunissen DALMI Working Paper No. 15231 May 2015 ABSTRACT Mechelen (Malines) is a small city in present-day Belgium, positioned between Antwerp and Brussels, along the river the Dijle. While most people today have never heard anything about this city or its history, this small town was once one of the most important cities in the Low Countries. It was also hub for the production of watercolor paintings. During the religious turmoil in the second half of the 16th century a large portion of artists fled the city to find a better life in other European cities. One of these places was Delft, were a group of 24 Mechelen artists settled. In this paper we look at the lives of these artists to better understand the knowledge circulation between the north and the south at the turn of the 17th century. Am amy golahny y golahny r Rembrandt’s lthough rembrandt’s study of eading the Bible has long been recognized as intense, his A interest in secular literature has been relatively neglected. Yet Philips Angel (1641) praised Rembrandt for “diligently seeking out the knowledge of histo- ries from old musty books.” Amy Golahny elaborates on this observation, reconstructing Rembrandt's library on the evi- dence of the 1656 inventory and discerning anew how Rem- brandt’s reading of histories contributed to his creative pro- cess. Golahny places Rembrandt in the learned vernacular cul- ture of seventeenth-century Holland and shows the painter to have been a pragmatic reader whose attention to historical texts strengthened his early rivalry with Rubens for visual drama and narrative erudition. rembrandt’s Amy Golahny has written numerous articles on and around Rem- brandt, and edited a book on the reciprocity of poetry and painting, The Eye of the Poet (1996). JACEK TYLICKI Three Paintings Reattributed to Pieter Isaacsz. Early in Dr.Gode Kramer of the Kunstsammlungen der Stadt Augsburg kindly sent me an ektachrome of a painting, St.John the Baptist Preaching in the Wilder- neH (fig. i), in the Bob Jones University Collection in Greenville, South Carolina, suggesting that it might be a work by Bartholomaus Strobel the Younger, a Sile- sian-Polish yth-century painter (1591 - after 1647), with whose work I was inten- sively involved at that time.2 I decided, after taking an investigative look at the photo, that it was not a picture by this Breslau artist, and put the slide into a draw- er. I recalled the painting at the sight of Pieter Isaacsz.'s (1 ,69 - I6z,) Rising of the LYlomenof Rome (fig. 3) at the exhibition 'Dawn of the Golden Age' in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum Back in Poland I began to assemble iconographic material and pulled out Dr. Kramer's letter too. In it, he associated the American painting with a Feast of Herod (fig. 5) in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, a widely published picture4 whose attribution had frequently changed until it was given to Strobel, an attribution of fairly long standing now, but one that has to be firmly rcjccted. ' I now realized that the Augsburg art historian had been right: the two fascinating pictures were by the same hand. Not from Silesia or Poland, however, but by a much better known hand, that of a Dutch artist who spent many years working for the artistic court of Denmark. The painter in question, Pieter Isaacsz., was a truly international personality - so 7 much so, in fact, as to call his loyalty into question. -
