Many people believe that the Yosemite National Park consists principally of the Yosemite Valley and its bordering heights. The name of the park, indeed, would seem to justify that belief, yet noth ing could be further from the truth. The Yosemite Valley, though by far the grandest feature of the region, occupies only a small part of the tract. The famous valley measures but a scant 7 miles in length; the park, on the other hand, comprises no less than 1,124 square miles, an area slightly larger than the State of Rhode Island, or about one-fourth as large as Connecticut. Within this area lie scores of lofty peaks and noble mountains, as well as many beautiful valleys and profound canyons; among others, the Iletch Hetchy Valley and the Tuolumne Canyon, each scarcely less wonderful than the Yosemite Valley itself. Here also are foaming rivers and cool, swift trout brooks; countless emerald lakes that reflect the granite peaks about them; and vast stretches of stately forest, in which many of the famous giant trees of California still survive. The Yosemite National Park lies near the crest of the great alpine range of California, the Sierra Nevada. -

Fractures Caused by North-South Compression, Eastern Llano Uplift, Central Texas; A Field Guide David Amsbury, Russell Hickerson, and Walter Haenggi Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, Austin, Texas, October 8, 1994 The field trip leaders gratefully acknowledge support for this trip from: Conoco Inc., Finding Functional Excellence,for defraying costs for refreshments; and Union Texas Petroleum for subsidizing costs of printing the guidebook. 1 Preface The leaders of the field trip want you, the participants, to consider three ideas: The fracturing that shattered the Central Texas crust during mid- Pennsylvanian time may have been strike-slip, not extensional; Compression responsible for the fracturing may have been oriented north-south, not east-west; and The implications of these two ideas include hypotheses about plate- tectonic history and predictions about the distribution of rock bodies on the surface and within the subsurface, that can be tested by future observation. We will visit a handful of exposures where fracture patterns are consistent with strike-slip movement in response to north-south compression. Our main "evidence" consists of 1) regional patterns of mapped faults plus 2) very local features such as sub-horizontal slickensides and mullions, and diamond-shaped sets of vertical fractures. Neither type of evidence is conclusive, only suggestive. AesrnA.ct Allanite from Barringer Hill, Llanc County, Texas, has been analyzed, with especial attention to the "lead-ratio " The resulting value, 0.428, indicates either a large accumula- tion of "common" lead or extensive alteration. A cornplete analysis, petrographic studies, and other data are given. The pegmatites of Barringer Hill, Llano County, Texas, have yielded many specimensof radioactive minerals, a number of which have been analyzed with especialattention to the "lead-ratio." This work has been summarizedby A. Holmes (1931)and (1937),so detailedreferences and discussionneed not be given here.It shouldbe pointed out that only one mineral from this locality, an uraninite analyzed by Hillebrand and by Mackintosh, yielded a "lead-ratio" that was completely acceptable to Holmes. Most of the other minerals thus analyzed mackintoshite, yttrocrasite (from Burnet County), thorogummite, yttrialite and fer- gusonite,-he considered either to be in the metamict condition or to be alteration products. fn the early studiesof the "lead-ratio" method of geologic time determination, the varying results obtained from the analyses of Barringer Hill minerals were used to discredit the method temporarily, though, as Holmes has shown, part of the difficulty has since been removed by the discovery of the correct r6le of thorium as a radioactiveelement in the production of iead. No correctionsfor "com- mon" lead have been applied to any of the work, as in some casesnot enough material for isotope studies was available, and most of the work was done before the need for this correction was realized. -

These landforms are all created by glaciation, especially the Wisconsion glaciation. (Kiver and Harris) Domes such as the Lembert Dome and Half Dome are strongly influenced by plucking and abrasion. (Wikipedia website) The U shape valleys and cliff such as El Capitan is also carved by glaciers. (Wikipedia website) Thus, Yosemite National Park is the masterpiece of glaciation. 1. Yosemite National Park Yosemite National Park located in California, reaching across the western slope of Sierra Nevada. It’s 747,956 acres in size. It belongs to the National Park Services. Specially, Yosemite is famous for its “granite, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves and biological diversity” (Wikipedia website). Yosemite Park was generated from Yosemite Valley. In 1864, Yosemite grant was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. Later on, John Muir built a much larger National Park which included much more than Yosemite Valley alone. In 1984, the Park became a “World heritage site” (Wikipedia website) Yosemite National Park is the home for a large variety of plants and animals including some rare ones because of the unique geology formations and the composition of soil. Besides, 89 per cent of the National Park was characterized as “Yosemite Wilderness”, which is a highly protected area. People have made huge effort to protect the “Yosemite wilderness”.
