2013PieRun Thatwas

 by: Alec Cherwenuk

Oh, so close! If the snow had only waited another day or so the run portion of the 2013 Pie Run could have gone off as planned. But such was not to be so, like 2012, the run was cancelled but the pies were served to those who braved the elements and came out for the socializing.

A sizeable group of members and friends gathered on the afternoon of Sunday, November 3, 2013 to taste the pies and spend a couple hours chatting and enjoying themselves. This year the pies on offer were crabapple, lemon meringue, pumpkin and raisin. Resident pie tasting experts Howard Jewell and Matt Romanow declared that the pies met their rigorous taste standards. But, just to be sure, Howard made a few extra trips to the pie table for some quality assurance testing.

The run did not occur but the route is still there and may be a good starting point for a 2014 event. The “Last Run of the Year” was a bit early but a new driving season is only six months away.

MG TESTING SPOTTED IN COLORADO

For the MG enthusiasts in our club, we received this link from Michael Connolley. The link is entitled “Why is this MG testing In Colorado?”. According to Mike, the latest MG Saloons/Hatchbacks drive quite well indeed and are very competitive on pricing. Apparently they also have a new sports model designed for release in the foreseeable future. http://www.tflcar.com/2013/10/spotted-mg-testing-colorado/

5 THE OPEN ROAD 6 Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night

Well, Guy did it again! During our chilly and snowy evening on November 5th, the Edmonton Scottish Society hosted Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night which included fireworks, hot chocolate and a baked potato with all the fixings. The bonfire helped provide some warmth from our freezing weather. Although it took awhile to get the fire underway, the hypnotic effect of the ferocious flames consuming the Guy Fawkes mannequin made it a somewhat cozy and colourful event. Below are a few photos.

Frank’s Filler I’ll be blow’d It was just a couple of weeks ago I was out having a nice little run in the B-GT after lunch. The new electronic Ignition is still working well and with the nice fall weather it was just right for a bumble around town in the GT. And the next day the snow came.. and came again. I drained the fuel from the blowerette and put in fresh. The machine fired up and we were out doing the walk and sidewalk. Usually it’s no problem to chug along with the small blower. This year it was having problems, not much snow was making it out the spout and that which did sort of plopped out and just cleared the machine. Plus it was pushing more snow in front. Time to do some research. The interweb provided a clue; worn paddles. The small snow blower has rubber paddles or liners The next challenge was the big rivet on each of the on the auger that do the snow moving. Had a look and sure auger blades and the Dremel tool with cutoff wheel did the enough, down to the nubs. What was even worse was the trick. In next to no time all the augers were ready for new weather prediction of another 15 cms of snow on it’s way for rubber bits. After a touch of body hammering and paint to the weekend. The local service centre didn’t stock the parts correct some of the abuse they’d received over the years, and after that we let the fingers do the walking. Finally the blades were installed. Now it’s ready to go, maybe it found a place on the south side of town that said yes. won’t snow. January Election Meeting Run and Hide... This small club that we belong to pretty much runs shall be delegated to a Chairperson appointed by the itself. It’s been trundling along for going on forty five years Executive. which, as clubs go, is pretty good. 9 THE OPEN ROAD 10

The Editor has to produce the newsletter and beat the bushes for articles from the members because our newsletter is full of stuff from and about our members. We’re a bit unique that way though at times we do print stories of interest to the members from other people.

All that being said it would be nice to have some new blood join the executive. Bringing new ideas and concepts and preventing the club from becoming stale and dated. This January don’t avoid the AGM; come out and vote and maybe even step forward. You’ll likely enjoy it... January 15th 2014. Happy New Year. A Past Executive, why are these people smiling?

Technical Advisors - offer technical support for members. - information - direction - phone support - may be called upon to offer technical workshops

The Officers may from time to time appoint further officers, professional consultants, committees and agents they deem necessary to carry out the objects of the ECSCC. i.e. Election officer

Now if you’ve scanned these descriptions you’ll see that many of the positions chair committees. That means if you’re interested in finding out what happens at the events or meeting level you can volunteer to be on the committee. Great way to dip one’s toes in the water Next up is the Planning meeting... what are we going to do in 14? without being responsible for much at all. Though it could mean that next year you’d have experience and voliá!

There are really only three positions that take some regular input above and beyond meetings; the Secretary Membership position has to do minutes and keep a data base of the members and take money which they give to the Treasurer. The Treasurer has to pay bills, file the annual report to the Solicitor General and deposit monies.

Garage” By Phil Johnson

Dennis' Blue Mini is finished and has gone to Ken Milesʼ shop to have it's internals reinstalled. Then itʼs off to a body shop for paint.

My storage building extension is finally "finished" the most important Dennis Coulthardʼs Mini phase; to get it closed up for the winter. Windows are in, the gravel floor is finished, and thanks to Frank and Mike Hrycyschyn, the rolling door is installed and, after much frustration waiting for the wind to stop blowing, the Philʼs Storage Building Extension. roof is finally on!! Now I can get all my "junk" under cover, and park my truck and van out of the weather!!

Work is progressing nicely on Allan Dunn's MGBGT and another couple of weeks should see it done and off for paint. New right sill is installed, painted and coated, and the right front fender mounting area is prepped ready to install the fender. Note my sleeping "helper" in the car!!

Ken Staples brought out the rear fenders for his big Healey project. There is a lot of old bondo on these that will have to be removed before repairs can commence!! The rest of the car will come later when the fenders are ready to Allan Dunnʼs MGB GT be fitted. Ken has already done some chassis restoration and I installed the new front suspension mounting points some time ago.

The MGA from Devon has been gathering dust, but work will carry on when the MGB is done and out.

On the agricultural side, there is a nice original 1936 Massey Harris “Stevie”, Philʼs Helper. Pacemaker in the shop that I have to get running for one of my customers. The magneto has been sent out for a rebuild and I have freed up and adjusted the valves. Next, the fuel system needs to be cleaned and the carb rebuilt. After changing the oil and cleaning the filter, then we'll see if it will run!

I'm anxious to get back to work on the TR3 so it can be on the An original 1936 Massey Harris Pacemaker. road next summer. New inner and outer main sills are the next priority along with installing the new floorpans. Barry Munson, who races a TR3, has offered to help with the installation of a set of SU's on the TR4A manifold and some fine tuning to make it go even better. His racing TR3 is running the "Minilite" wheels that Cam had installed on this car.

I just finished a wheeled carrier rig for Mike H.'s latest project so it can be removed from the trailer it now resides on!

Always something new coming in the door at Bardo!! Phil Johnson
