For those of you unfamiliar with any of the stagings or the recent motion picture made from McNally's wonderfully insightful play, Love! chronicles the lives of eight gay men and their three summer holiday visits to a country home in upstate New York, owned by dancer/choreographer extraordi- naire Gregory (Dennis Canright) and his blind lover, Bobby (Robert G. Shores). Their guests for the summer include two conservative lovers, Arthur (Stan Graner) and Perry (Todd Camp); a show tune-lovin' queen, Buzz (Steve Garrett); romantic Brit James and his evil twin, John (Kenny Green); and John's studly boy-toy, Ramon (Eddie Zertuche). Over the course of the summer, the lives of each man is changed in some way through outward circum- stance, inner growth or a combination of the two. The plot, for the most part, is inconse- quential. The power of this play lies almost exclusively with its characters and their portrayals and the Fort Worth Theatre cast is more than able to tackle the complex roles with professionalism, wit and humility. For the show's other acid-spitter, Green chooses campy melodrama for his embod- iment of John. That isn't to say we don't all know a few people like him, as well. Perhaps John is played a little more over- the-top to contrast with his kinder, gentler brother James. As a result, the dual role succeeds and Green is more than deft at alternating characters at lightning speed. Canright produces a believable stutter so unnerving that without prior knowledge about his character, it would be easy to empathize with him for having a bad case of stage fright. The fact that it is, indeed, acting makes it applaudable. Shores and Zertuche transcend their good looks with portrayals of depth and emotion. As Bobby, Shores does blind sur- prisingly well and Zertuche tackles naive Ramon with great abandon. Bobby's guilt and Ramon's lack thereof make for inter- esting interactions after the two share a creamy tryst in front of the refrigerator late one night. Overall, the performances are incredible for a small theatre company. Director Steven Alan McGaw elicits believable emotion in a well-paced, well-blocked manner that keeps the material lively and full of energy. For only his second foray into directing for this theatre, he proves that he can handle a complex, layered play with marvelous dexterity. The only misfortune of the production is in its program, where the heterosexuality of two cast members has to be on-so-sub- tly heralded in their bios. I doubt the same mantra of machismo would be made if this were Othello or something.
