This year's award ceremony included the prestigious and reinstituted Sapphire Award. The Sapphire Award was given to DYC member and avid sailor, Jeff DeSandre. The Sapphire award honors the late Doug Breck for his dedication and restoration work on antique wood boats including his own pristine antique NY32 named "Sapphire". Jeff received this award for his own outstanding contribution to antique wood boats this year. Not only has Jeff restored his own 6 Meter antique racing sailboat, he just built a replica, antique speed boat from scratch. It is now ready for launch. In addition to that, Jeff put together the first annual Classic Boat Regatta for antique , with 24 boats registered from seven different clubs. Six boats came from as far away as Port Huron. YTD against budget - As of the end of our third fiscal quarter on June 30, 2012, I'm happy to report that we showed a positive variance to budget of over $100,000. Our positive variance in member headcount as discussed by Com. Barlow is a major contributor to this variance, but both banquet and grill sales are roughly 20% over budget and also con- tributing to our positive variance. Some of this is due to our expanded winter hours, but banquet operations are the largest component of this favorable variance. Other than labor costs which naturally vary with the level of grill and banquet sales, costs are largely in line with budget on an overall basis, with savings in some areas such as utilities offsetting increases in others. Barlow stated "Things are definitely on the upswing at our favorite island paradise." and looking around our Club members can see progress on almost every front. While there'll always be something going on, the big, disrup- tive, projects should be done for now. With critical repairs and upgrades in place it's time to ramp up the usage and there is no Club that does that bet- ter than DYC. Unless you're comatose (and even then there's a nice spot under a great tree at the east end to hang) there is something to tickle your fancy that should have caught your eye on the previous pages, or on the website or from an eBlast or from Margaret's Blue Hallway Wall Display, an art form unto itself. You won't find a friendlier bunch of people gathered in one spot on the planet then right here at the DYC. While we've got the Ambassadors working hard enhancing member involvement I'm asking you to go out of your way a bit and introduce yourself to an unfamiliar face. Just taking a moment to say hello, asking if there are any ques- tions you could help answer or procedures you could help them under- stand will go a long way towards improving our membership retention. If you're a new member don't be shy, stick out your hand, introduce yourself and ask any question that's on your mind. I guarantee you'll be happy you did; you'll walk away with a better understanding and more than likely a new friend too. With membership's growth our projections indicate that we are on course to fully fund the preservation accounts again and, if we stay on track, we may even be able to add back in some much needed main- tenance, housekeeping and groundkeeper's hours. Even though we're making financial progress we'll need a continua- tion of the operating assessment. Like last year we'd like to call a spe- cial meeting prior to the expiration of the current version this September 30th. Please plan to attend a special membership meeting and support this important funding proposal before summer's end. Our new CFO is making progress and getting up to speed. You'll be pleased to know our website will have the latest financials posted again; look for the familiar flash report posting shortly after the second Wednesday of the month. If you haven't yet, please stop in and intro- duce yourself to Randy Suciu and let him know you appreciate his efforts.
