(Mirametrics) What are Messier Objects? • Messier objects are a list of astronomical sources compiled by Charles Messier, an 18th and early 19th century astronomer. He created a list of distracting objects to avoid while comet hunting. This list now contains over 110 objects, many of which are the most famous astronomical bodies known. The list contains planetary nebula, star clusters, and other galaxies. - Bobby Martinez The Telescope The telescope used to take these images is an Astronomical Consultants and Equipment (ACE) 24- inch (0.61-meter) Ritchey-Chretien reflecting telescope. It has a focal ratio of F6.2 and is supported on a structure independent of the building that houses it. It is equipped with a Finger Lakes 1kx1k CCD camera cooled to -30o C at the Cassegrain focus. It is equipped with dual filter wheels, the first containing UBVRI scientific filters and the second RGBL color filters. Messier 1 Found 6,500 light years away in the constellation of Taurus, the Crab Nebula (known as M1) is a supernova remnant. The original supernova that formed the crab nebula was observed by Chinese, Japanese and Arab astronomers in 1054 AD as an incredibly bright “Guest star” which was visible for over twenty-two months. The supernova that produced the Crab Nebula is thought to have been an evolved star roughly ten times more massive than the Sun. -

AKTION 2019 no.: 84p8 Böhmen – Mähren – Österreich: Verbindungswege mittelalterlicher Kunst und Geschichte ČECHY – MORAVA – RAKOUSKO: VZÁJEMNÉ VZTAHY V UMĚNÍ A DĚJINÁCH STŘEDOVĚKU 23. –27. 4. 2019 Final Report It was the basic goal of this project to offer mutual scholarly exchange without bureaucratic hurdles and thus to facilitate the development of a sustainable network to young, future art history scholars from Czech republic and Austria. Thanks to the support of the AKTION grant project, students were able to establish contacts and to overcome barriers of linguistic as well as institutional nature. It proved a great advantage to hold the entire excursion in English, which allowed discussions on methods and aspects of „Czech“ and „Austrian“ art history on a linguistically neutral level.1 Since this was the first excursion to Vienna for most of the Ostrava students, the program gave a first introduction regarding the artistic manifestation of strong dynastic, cultural and economical connections between Austria and Bohemia, Moravia during the Middle Ages2 and encouraged to seek (and find) new research possibilities in this area. Students realized that the scientific valuation of a per se „transnational“ medieval society and art must stand beyond modern national approaches.3 This was accomplished with great success by a concept, which actively demanded the examination of selected works of art both from the Czech and the Austrian side as sketched below (see attachment 1). The students were obliged to deal with the topics in advance of the excursion, to prepare papers and present them in English language. Once established as a settlement of merchants eight centuries ago on the junctions of the rivers Svratka and Svitava, it withstood the pressure of both the Hussite and Swedish besiegement, witnessed Napoleon‘s military expedition to Slavkov, bore the cruel consequences of the Austrian defeat at the Battle of the Three Emperors, became an industrial centre of the Habsburg monarchy called "the Austrian Manchester" and, in the twentieth century, gained a character of a modern city thanks to the construction of new buildings in the functionalist style. Today Brno is a seat of universities and important judiciary institutions. It offers many possibilities of cultural enjoyment in its numerous theatres, museums, cinemas and clubs. The Brno Exhibition Centre with its eighty-year tradition is a venue of many international trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses, and as such plays a significant role in the social and economic life of the whole city. -

ON THE WORKS OF EULER AND HIS FOLLOWERS ON SPHERICAL GEOMETRY ATHANASE PAPADOPOULOS Abstract. We review and comment on some works of Euler and his followers on spherical geometry. We start by presenting some memoirs of Euler on spherical trigonometry. We comment on Euler's use of the methods of the calculus of variations in spherical trigonometry. We then survey a series of geometrical resuls, where the stress is on the analogy between the results in spherical geometry and the corresponding results in Euclidean geometry. We elaborate on two such results. The first one, known as Lexell's Theorem (Lexell was a student of Euler), concerns the locus of the vertices of a spherical triangle with a fixed area and a given base. This is the spherical counterpart of a result in Euclid's Elements, but it is much more difficult to prove than its Euclidean analogue. The second result, due to Euler, is the spherical analogue of a generalization of a theorem of Pappus (Proposition 117 of Book VII of the Collection) on the construction of a triangle inscribed in a circle whose sides are contained in three lines that pass through three given points. Both results have many ramifications, involving several mathematicians, and we mention some of these developments. We also comment on three papers of Euler on projections of the sphere on the Euclidean plane that are related with the art of drawing geographical maps.
