Community Shabbat Dinner Friday, August 24, 2018 5:30 p.m. at Beth El Congregation with guest speaker Rabbi Gershom Sizomu Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, the leader of the Abayudaya Jews of Uganda, is the first black rabbi from sub-Saharan Africa to be ordained at an American rabbinic school. As a visionary community leader, he chose to attend a 750 White Pond Dr., Akron, OH rabbinic seminary to better understand ancient and modern Judaism and bring the Ugandan community into mainstream Judaism. The Abayudaya are a growing community of over 1,500 Jews living among their 10,000 Christian and Muslim neighbors in scattered villages in the rolling, green hills of Eastern Uganda. In 2016 Rabbi Sizomu ran for Ugandan Parliament for the second time and Rabbi Sizomu will also participate in won an opposition seat representing the Bungokho North District. Supporting Isolated, Emerging, and Returning Jewish Communities Around the Globe “All of Us” Volume 24 Number 1 Spring 2017 Italian Jewish Diversity: Ruth’s Cup at the Seder Table By Rabbi Barbara Aiello photos by Rabbi Barbara Aiello Here in southern Italy, in the “toe” of the Italian “boot,” our Passover table features symbolic foods and ancient ritual practices that, to our Ashkenazi brothers and sisters, seem different from what so many Jews are used to. A cucumber slice serves as the “zeroah” or the “arm of God,” while pieces of celery dipped in vinegar replace the usual parsley and salt water. And what can be said for the long-stemmed green onions used to whack each other on the wrist as we simulate the whips of the slave masters during the singing of “Dayenu?” Here at Sinagoga Ner Tamid del Sud (“The Eternal Light of the South”) in the tiny village of Serrastretta in the Calabrian hills, our members and friends are “B’nei Anusim,” descendants of Italian Jews forced into Christian conversion during Inquisition times. All that we offer, including our Passover seder, is a monument to Jewish diversity--which this year included a new tradition straight from America-- Ruth’s Cup. NHC Men’s Club-Kippah Project: The Jews of Abayudaya MITCH SPIEGEL·WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2018 The Abayudaya are a Baganda community in eastern Uganda near the town of Mbale who practice a form of Judaism. Abayudaya means “people of Judah”. They are devout in their practice, keeping kashrut, and observing Shabbat. About 100 years ago, a chieftain named; Semei Kakungulu, after studying different religions, decided to reject all the forms of biblical religions except for the Torah. He embraced his own textual interpretation of the first five books of Moses, which made him (and his followers and later their descendants) something very close to Jews. Initially, they did not convert, but rather just followed the path of Judaism. They suffered persecution under Idi Amin (in the 1970`s) and the community dwindled to 300. In 2008, the head of the community, Gershom Sizomu, came to the USA to officially convert under the auspices of the Conservative movement. The entire community then underwent a conversion and was recognized as part of the Conservative movement in 2009. As of today, most of the 2,500 members of the community have converted. These Jews are isolated and suffer from poverty. As a community they are not recognized as Jewish by Israel`s Orthodox Chief Rabbinate. NHC Men`s Club is selling Kippot made by women of Abayudaya. The actual performance is transcribed, followed in brackets by the printed biblical text. When translating biblical or traditional liturgical text, I give the entire text in Luganda or Hebrew followed by the entire translation of the text in English. Biblical translations are taken from Tanakh, The Holy Scriptures: The New Jewish Publication Society Translation According to the Traditional Hebrew Text (Philadelphia: The Jewish Publication Society 1988). English translations and transcriptions of Hebrew liturgical passages, are taken as indicated from Siddur Sim Shalom for Shabbat and Festivals (New York: The Rabbinic Assembly 1998) and Kol Haneshamah, Shabbat Eve (Wyncote, PA: The Reconstructionist Press 1989). When presenting translations of other songs in Luganda, Lusoga, Lugwere and Lunyole, I give interlinear translation. Orthography is contested in these languages and here I use the spelling chosen by leaders of the Abayudaya community. The Abayudaya’s Hebrew pronunciation is influenced by Luganda, where words end with a vowel. As a result, when singing in Hebrew, the Abayudya often add a vowel to the end of a word. Feast of Freedom An Abayudaya Haggadah Supplement PREVIEW About the Project In the 100th year of the Jewish people of Uganda, called Abayudaya, the Cantors Assembly ventured on a mission there to build a sacred bridge of peoplehood and to explore the unique aspects and commonalities of our musical heritages. Additionally, several cantors also visited the emerging Abayudaya community in Kenya. Our purpose was to not only visit but to come back and tell their story through music and spoken word. We pondered, “How could that be most effectively done?” It dawned on us that when the Jewish people tell our story every year on Passover, we read from the Haggadah. Haggadah literally means “the telling.” It tells of our journeys, our struggles, and our ultimate redemption through the words of Torah. What a perfect vehicle for telling the story of the Abayudaya. The Ugandan Abayudaya Jews’ founding father was the warrior leader Semei Kakungulu. In 1919, after being approached by Christian missionaries, he fervently chose to refute their attempts to bring him into the fold of their faith, instead embracing Judaism as his chosen religion. Like the biblical Abraham, Kakungulu converted to a monotheistic life, desiring to follow, in his words, “the one true God.” The group flourished without much outside influence for decades. In 1971, the despot Idi Amin took over Uganda and forbade any religious practice other than Islam. Having blossomed into a community of 3,000 souls, the Abayudaya dwindled significantly during this period. Amin was overthrown in 1979, on the eve of Passover. After eight years of practicing Judaism in secret, the Abayudaya could then openly celebrate a literal “feast of freedom” in their communities.

[email protected] 1 Shlach Lekhah 5778 All Of Them In this week’s Torah portion, the twelve spies get their first glimpse of the country that will become the Land of Israel. Ten of them fail to believe they can live there; but the promise is made that the children of the spies’ generation, plus Joshua and Caleb, will enter the land eventually. All of them. And when the modern State of Israel was founded in 1948, the Law of Return provided that any Jew who wished to make Aliyah could emigrate to Israel. As modified in 1970, the law applies to those born Jews (having a Jewish mother or maternal grandmother), those with Jewish ancestry (having a Jewish father or grandfather) and converts to Judaism (Orthodox, Reform, or Conservative denominations). All of them. Last week I asked us to take fifteen seconds to try physically to experience what Israelis living on the Gaza border must have been feeling. It was a way of trying to express our deep connection to the body of Israel, that what happens there has a resonance here. The struggle for the body of Israel – its security, its borders, its relationships with the countries around it – continues, and as Jews, we attune ourselves to it. But this week brought us a situation that exemplifies a struggle that is just as important, if not more so. It is the struggle for Israel’s Jewish soul. And it begins with a young man called Kibita Yosef. Kibita comes from the Abuyadaya community in Uganda.
