Sports Pg 9A 12-28.Indd star-news sports The Goodland Star-News / Friday, December 28, 2007 9a Winter sports to resume next week By Sharon Corcoran [email protected] The Cowboys’ and Cowgirls’ basketball and wrestling seasons will resume Thursday and next Friday after the holiday break. The Cowboys won the season opener against the Imperial, Neb., Longhorns, but the Cowgirls lost that game. Then the Cowboys beat the Weskan Coyotes but lost to Wallace County and Norton at the Topside Tip-off. The Cowgirls beat Skyline High of Longmont, Colo., but lost to Ottawa and Norton. The boys and girls both lost to Scott City Tuesday, Dec. 18, leaving the boys with a 2-3 record and the girls at 1-4. The Cowboys and Cowgirls will be back in action next Friday, when they face Lakin at Max Jones Fieldhouse, the girls at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7. The weather has changed the Cowboys schedule with the junior varsity tournament being resched- uled to Monday, Jan. 7, and Thursday, Jan. 10 from Monday, Dec. 10, and Thursday, Dec. 13. The Quinter game was postponed from Dec. 14 to Tuesday, Jan. 8. Activities Director Don Smith said there won’t be any junior varsity games, but that the boys freshman teams will play in Quinter at 5:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) while the Cowgirls varsity are playing. The boys varsity will follow. The Cowboys will face Rawlins County at Max Jones Fieldhouse on Friday, Jan. 11, with the junior varsity games beginning at 3:45 p.m. Smith said the Hays High game that was post- poned from Dec. 11 would be played Saturday, Jan. 12, at Max Jones with the junior varsity games beginning at 3:45 p.m. The wrestlers started their season by winning a dual on the road Thursday, Nov. 29, and then took second at the St. Francis Gabel-Jenkins Invitational Tournament Saturday, Dec. 1. They won a dual against Rawlins County Thursday, Dec. 9, at home but ended up seventh at the Colby Invitational Tour- nament that weekend. They went undefeated against other teams in the Holiday Classic to win their home tournament Saturday, Dec. 15. The Cowboys will wrestle in a dual against Colby at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Max Jones Field- house. They will be at a tournament at 10 a.m. next Friday and 8 a.m. next Saturday in Liberal. The junior varsity will compete at 8 a.m. that Saturday in WaKeeney. Below the press box, six new panels display some of the "nest to ever don the Orange and White-- Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Al Wilson, Reggie White, Peyton Manning, John- ny Majors and Doug Atkins. Most noticeable from the outside are the approx- imately 700,000 bricks that totally transformed the look of the stadium’s north and west sides. Standing in the middle of that transformation is the majestic Gate 21 plaza area. Six lofty archways dominate the entrance, which doubles during the work week as a key campus trans- portation hub. No doubt the tra#c on game days is just as hectic.
