Season Outlook 2 EXPERIENCED TOREROS LOOK FOR STRONG 2000 CAMPAIGN With eighteen starters and fifty-five players returning from last year's 5-5 ball club, fifth-year head coach Kevin McGarry is optimistic for a strong showing in 2000. The breakdown for returning starters is as follows -- eight from the offense, nine from the defensive side of the ball, and one special teams kicker. The big news on offense is the return of quarterback Mike Stadler who missed the 1999 campaign after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the team's first possession in their season opener at Azusa Pacific. The two-time First Team All Pioneer Football League quarterback (1997 & 1998) is already USD's all-time passing leader for completions (311), passing yards (4,324) and touchdown passes (47). He will be pushed by returning senior Tom Jackson, a 1999 2nd Team All-PFL perfonner, who played solid, consistent football throughout the season, finishing with 1,5 10 yards passsing and 7 touchdowns. The Toreros return two First Team All-PFL performers on the offensive side of the ball -- senior tailback Oscar Arzu and senior offensive lineman Christos Renner. Arzu finished last year with 1,041 yards rushing on 162 attempts, good for 11 rushing scores. He busted loose for three games of 200-plus yards, gaining a season-best 213 yards and 4 touchdowns against Whittier; he also added a 202 yard/ 3 TD game against Cal Lutheran, and a 212 yard/2 TD contest against Butler. He heads into his final campaign needing 836 yards rushing to become the school's all time leader in that department. Solidifying the backfield will be senior fullback Chris Long (5-11, 210) and senior tailback Stanford Tuupo (6-0, I 95). Renner earned First Team A ll-PFL as a tackle and will anchor a line that also returns seniors Chris Lamb (6-4, 285 lb.) and Sean McCamey (6- 1, 260 lb.). Despite the loss of Dylan Ching, the school's career leader in every receiving statistical department, Stadler and Jackson will have plenty of targets to aim for. Senior wideouts Matt Hackett (22 catches for 240 yards) and Mark Pappas (11 catches for 135 yards, I TD) will see plenty ofballs coming their way this season, and senior WR David Barlow (6-0, 190) and junior Dylan Mora (5 -11 , 183) will also see plenty ofaction. Junior tightend Matt Guardia finished the 1999 campaign on a strong note with two touchdown receptions against Wagner in the season finale. Defensively the Toreros return nine starters with a trio of 2nd Team All-PFL picks back -- senior safety Kyle Slusser, senior tackle Anthony Banovac, and junior linebacker Bryan Baxter. Slusser returns for his fourth season and third as the Toreros starting safety. For the second straight season he earned 2nd Team All-PFL honors while leading the team in tackles (97) and interceptions (4). Slusser, who tallied 3 interceptions against Wagner last year, enters the 2000 season needing two picks to surpass current assistant coach Kaeo Gouveia's school record of 12.

Josh McDaniels fiasco, anthem protests are examples why the NFL misses Pat Bowlen right now By Paul Klee Colorado Springs Gazette Feb. 11, 2018 Robert Kraft is the real villain in the Josh McDaniels-Colts fiasco. With great power comes great responsibility, and no owner uses his for self-serving interests more frequently than the Patriots’. Some of the NFL’s most prominent issues — national anthem protests, distrust between players and owners, the fallout from continued and necessary CTE studies, all that — are a direct result of the league’s knee-jerk reaction to almost anything that threatens to tarnish the shield. I call it the CYA plan. Instead of working together to advance the greater good with a sensible solution, the men in charge seek to cover their own backside. The anthem protests are the perfect example. The NBA quickly and successfully identified a solution in the form of a blanket decree that all teams must stand for the anthem. And when’s the last time you read a report on anthem issues in the NBA? There haven’t been any. There’s been zero blowback from a league roster that’s 70 percent black. The NBA’s all good. This isn’t hard. Meantime, the wishy-washy NFL tried to appease this group ... and that group ... and that other group ... and the end result has been distrust from players and alienating a sizable chunk of its fandom. Nobody follows the CYA plan — ignoring what’s best for the league in order to help itself — better than Kraft. That brings us to McDaniels, who reneged on a promise to join the Colts as coach.

1818 Chouteau Avenue St. Louis, Missouri 63103 (314) 421-2268 A NCAA Division I FCS Conference FAX (314) 421-3505 FOR RELEASE CONTACT: Cody Bush 2 p.m. (ET), July 28, 2021 e-mail: [email protected] Pioneer Football League announces 2021 Preseason All-PFL Team ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Pioneer Football League named 38 student-athletes to its Preseason All-Pioneer Football League Teams Wednesday, including 29 returning First Team All-PFL selections. Returning players named to the league’s 2020-21 All-PFL Teams were placed automatically on the 2020 Preseason All-PFL team in order of head coaches voting. In addition, the 2021 preseason team includes student-athletes from the University of Dayton and Marist College who would have appeared on the 2020 Preseason All-PFL Team. Preseason favorite and defending champion Davidson has five preseason selections: running back Dylan Sparks, fullback Coy Williams, offensive lineman Khalil Miller, defensive lineman Jonathan Hammond, and linebacker Jake Alexander. Sparks, Williams, and Miller led a Wildcats offensive unit that led all FCS programs in rushing yards (280.0 yards per game). Hammond returns after earning Freshman Defensive Player of the Year accolades after posting 9.5 tackles for loss and four sacks in his seven-game debut campaign. San Diego, picked to finish second in Tuesday’s PFL Preseason Coaches’ Poll, saw seven of its student-athletes earn preseason recognition: wide receiver Michael Carner, tight end Derek Kline, offensive lineman DJ Wright, linebackers Kyle Bilchik and Kama Kamaka as well as defensive backs Michael Hawkins and Hunter Nichols. The Toreros five defensive selections paced a defensive that permitted a league-low 266.0 total yards per game and tallied a league- best 3.17 sacks per game over six outings.

The ultimate football turn of events has inspired the city’s chefs, cooks and bartenders to come up with clever, quirky—delicious—Birds-inspired food and drink. Among the ever-growing list of Eagles fan fare are vegan pastry inspired by Broad Street’s greased poles (Dottie’s Donuts), all-green Bloody Mary cocktails (Pub & Kitchen), broccolini cheesesteaks (Rooster Soup Co.) and underdog everything, including soft pretzels (Philly Pretzel Factory) and mac-and-cheese (Mac Mart). Here are the details: Bleeding Green Bloody Mary – Rittenhouse Square’s handsome, rowdy, delightful Pub & Kitchen has turned their tomato cocktail green with cucumber, green apple, spinach, parsley, fresh horseradish, hot sauce, black pepper and vodka. 1946 Lombard Street, (215) 545-0350, thepubandkitchen.com Broccolini Cheesesteak – The much-loved, do-good diner Rooster Soup Co.
