Paul Henkel was born on December 15, 1754 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died on November 27, 1825. He was the son of Jacob Henkle and Barbara Dieter (Teter). His father was the son of Justus Henkle, whose father, Anthony Jacob Henkel was an Evangelical Lutheran Minister in the neighborhood of Frankfurt-on-the-Rhine. In 1760 his family moved northward, settling in present day Petersburg, West Virginia. He married Elizabeth Nagley on November 20th, 1776. Henkel was a Lutheran clergyman and was active in organizing the North Carolina synod. He served in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection contains the manuscripts of Rev. Paul Henkel. It includes a German Bible that is believed to have been used by Henkel while serving near Broad Run/New Haven, West Virginia; transcription copies of Rev. Anthony Jacob Henkle’s activity in Germany; diary and journal entries detailing travel; daybooks; poems, prayers, and hymns; and Henkel’s handwritten autobiography. The majority of the materials are in German, some translated, and few in English. The records are arranged in the order 2 boxes, a total of 22 folders.
