SERMON: "FRANCIS DAVID and the EDICT of TORDA" Francis
SERMON: "FRANCIS DAVID AND THE EDICT OF TORDA" Francis David (Ferencz David) was born at Klausenburg in Kolozsvar, the capital of Transylvania, in 1510. He was the son of a shoemaker and of a deeply religious mother descended from a noble family. He was first educated at a local Franciscan school, then at Gyulafehervar, a Catholic seminary. His high intellectual ability led him to the University of Wittenburg, where he completed his education 1545-1548 (then in his thirties). He developed the ability to debate fluently in Hungarian, German and Latin. His years of study fall in the exciting period of the Reformation. Although he must have been aware of and perhaps influenced by the debates of the time, his first position was that of rector of a Catholic school in Beszterce. He studied Luthers writings and became a Protestant. Lutheranism had spread rapidly in Transylvania during his absence and he joined the new movement on his return, becoming pastor of a Lutheran church in Peterfalva. He took part in theological debates, proving himself a gifted and powerful orator and a clear thinker. His fame spread, and he was elected as a Superintendent or Bishop of the Lutheran Church. The Calvinist or Reformed movement was at the same time spreading across Transylvania, and Francis David studied its teachings. Its main difference from Lutheranism lay in its symbolical interpretation of the Lords Supper. Gradually convinced, he resigned his Lutheran bishopric in 1559 and joined the Calvinists as an ordinary minister. Again, his intellectual ability and his gifts of oratory bore him to leadership and he was elected Bishop of the Reformed Church of Transylvania. -

HISTORY MINUTE presented by Mike Zapf January 11, 2015 Johann Samuel Schwerdtfeger His life story is an example of how failures and disappointment can be transforming for the best. A life of purpose through faith. New Jerusalem's first minister, Johann Samuel Schwerdtfeger, the son of a pharmaceutical chemist, was born June 4th, 1734 in Burgbernheim, in northern Bavaria, and studied theology at the Friedrich-Alexander University at Erlangen, near Nuernberg. Apparently he was an indifferent student and broke off his studies before earning a diploma. He entered the University of Erlangen to study theology but in 1753 he discontinued his studies and left for America. After wandering Europe, he became prey of redemptioners who recruited and transported him to the America. In exchange for his "free" passage he was bought for five years' service by Evangelical Lutheran Church in York, Pennsylvania, which was interested in a man lettered in Divinity and Law. He received ordination and became their pastor. He eventually fell into disfavor with some of the church hierarchy primarily because of a letter in which he divided all the Lutherans in York into Sadducees, Pharisees, Halle Pietists, and Old Lutherans—counting himself an Old Lutheran. In 1758 he served the Palatine Lutherans at Earltown (New Holland) in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and married Dorothea Schwabe, the daughter of a parish elder. It was here that he learned to know Reverend Henry M. Muhlenberg and relaxed his criticism of Pietism. In 1762 he petitioned for and received admission as a qualified Lutheran minister from the Pennsylvania Ministerium. His credentials were enhanced by formal testimonials in Latin from the university authorities in Germany and from the German court preacher in London. -

Introduction – Manifold Reader Responses: the Reception of Erasmus in Early Modern Europe
INTRODUCTION – MANIFOLD READER RESPONSES: THE RECEPTION OF ERASMUS IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE Karl Enenkel Erasmus provides one of the most interesting cases not only for the pro- cesses of early modern image and reputation building through publishing in print,1 but at the same time – and certainly not to a lesser degree – for the impossibility of controlling one’s reception before an audience that was continually growing, was increasingly emancipated, heterogeneous, and fragmented, and was, above all, constantly changing. This loss of control is especially striking, since Erasmus had been so successful in building up his literary and scholarly fame by shrewdly utilizing both the hierarchical organization of early modern intellectual life and the means of the new medium of the printed book. From the second decade of the 16th century onward, Erasmus succeeded in gaining an immense, hitherto unrivalled fame spread over the whole of Latin-writing and Latin-loving Europe. Erasmus fought his crusade for fame by means of his Latin works – which he had printed at such important publishers as Josse Bade (Paris), Aldus Manutius (Venice), Johannes Froben (Basel), and Mathias Schürer (Strasbourg) – especially the Adagia; De duplici copia; his translation and paraphrases of and commentaries on the New Testament; his edition of Hieronymus, including a new Life of St. Jerome; the Ciceronianus; and the Laus Stultitiae. By their very appearance, all of these works caused seri- ous earthquakes in intellectual life with respect to philological criticism, authentic Latin style, and religious, ethical, and social criticism. Since Erasmus was so successful in spreading his fame all over Europe that almost all intellectuals of that era were, in some way or another, acquainted with his name (even if they did not have the opportunity to carefully study his works), one could be tempted to think that “Eras- mus” or “Erasmian” became a kind of intellectual trademark or brand. -
