The Religious Development of the Early German Settlers In "Greater Pennsylvania": The Shenandoah Valley of Virginia* John B. Frantz The Pennsylvania State University Introduction Throughout much of the eighteenth century, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia was the frontier. The first Europeans to settle there came from colonies to the north. They had the opportunity to create new culture in this sparsely inhabited area. Most of the Indians had aban- doned it, and Europeans from the Tidewater had not yet spread their plantations that far west. The Valley was an ideal location for innova- tion. Nevertheless, the early settlers brought with them their religious heritage and developed patterns and institutions for their spiritual nur- ture that were remarkably similar to those that they had known in their previous homes. Historiography Study of the religious development of the early German settlers has been underway for more than a century and a half One of the first accounts appeared in Samuel Kercheval's 1833 History of the Valley of Virginia.' A more detailed description is contained in John W Way- 1. Samuel Kercheval, The History of the Valley of Virginia 4th ed. (Strasburg Shenandoah Publish- ing House, 1925), originally published in 1833. Threinen Although the question of church fellowship among Lutherans has posed a problem in various parts of the world, it is really, strictly speaking, one which has emerged out of conditions and circumstances existing in the Americas. For where one has a free church tradition and a multitude of religious bodies co-existing alongside of one another, one quite naturally also has a tendency to have different church bodies of the same tradition or confession growing up. Where in Europe one had divergences of theological opinion contending against one another within the same church body, in America these divergences took on organizational form and were embodied in church structures. As a result, essentially the same question confronted Lutherans in 17 18 Consensus America in their dealings with other Lutherans as had confronted the churches of dif- fering confessions in Europe in their dealings with one another. The question was changed from “Is that body Christian enough?” to “Is that body Lutheran enough for fellowship?” Yet the overtones of the former were still contained in the latter as Lutherans used words like heterodox to describe other Lutherans. -

George Fry It has always struck me as strangely appropriate that the Protestant Reformation and the discovery of America occurred simultaneously. When Martin Luther was nine, Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas; in 15 19, while he debated Dr. John Eck at Leipzig, a fellow-subject of Emperor Charles V, Hernando Cortez, began the conquest of Mexico. Philip Melanc ht hon, the "Great Confessor," was com.posing the Augustana at about the time Francisco Pizarro was occupying the Inca Empire in Peru. By the time of Melancht hon's death in 1560, the Americas had been opened up to European settlement. A related theme of equal interest is that of the American dis- covery of the Reformation. Or, more properly, the recovery by Lutherans in the United States of the history and theology of the Reformers. -

January 2011 Newsletter Article – Biography of CFW Walther “Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. (Hebrews 13:7) 2011 is the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther (October 25, 1811 – May 7, 1887) He was the first president of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and is still the most influential pastor and theologian of our church body. This year I will be dedicating each of my newsletter articles to some aspect of his life and/or teaching. There is still much that Walther has to say to us today, even 200 years after his birth. CFW Walther was born in the village of Langenchursdorf in a part of Germany known as Saxony. His father and grandfather were pastors in Langenchursdorf, and his great grandfather was also a pastor. His childhood built a foundation of faith in God’s grace and mercy in Jesus Christ. At the age of three his father gave him a three-penny piece for learning this hymn verse: Jesus, thy blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress; Wherin before my God I’ll stand When I shall reach the heavenly land.1 Ferdinand went off to boarding school as a young boy. During that time Rationalism was broadly accepted in the German lands. He was taught that the Bible could not be trusted and that Christianity was nothing more than simple moralistic teachings. He would later recall, “I was eighteen years old when I left the Gymnasium (high school), and I had never heard a sentence taken from the Word of God out of a believing mouth. -

They entered their names upon the register, the one in n strong, flowing hand: "Ad. 1\forbach, Dresden," the other, in more delicate letters, "II. E. Fischer, merchant, Dresden." The "City of Hull" was one of the better class of hotels in the great harbor city. From a receipted bill which is still preserved, we' learn that the iwo guests of July H paid the sum of six Ileichstnler for lodgings, a compnratiYcly high amount for those days. "Thank God, a start has been made !" - ihis thought was uppermost in the minds of the two strangers from Dresden when they composed their members for sleep on that night in 1838. Prof. David Jay Webber Ternopil’, Ukraine Introduction C. F. W. Walther, the great nineteenth-century German-American churchman, has some- times been dubbed by his admirers “the American Luther.”1 While all comparisons of this nature have their limitations, there is a lot of truth in this appellation. Walther’s temperament, his lead- ership qualities, and especially his theological convictions would lend legitimacy to such a de- scription. Similarly, we would like to suggest that Charles Porterfield Krauth, in light of the unique gifts and abilities with which he was endowed, and in light of the thoroughness and balance of his mature theological work, can fittingly be styled “the American Chemnitz.” Krauth was in fact an avid student of the writings of the Second Martin, and he absorbed much from him in both form and substance. It is also quite apparent that the mature Krauth always attempted to follow a noticeably Chemnitzian, “Concordistic” approach in the fulfillment of his calling as a teacher of the church in nineteenth-century America. We will return to these thoughts in a little while. Be- fore that, though, we should spend some time in examining Krauth’s familial and ecclesiastical origins, and the historical context of his development as a confessor of God’s timeless truth. Krauth’s Origins In the words of Walther, Krauth was, without a doubt, the most eminent man in the English Lutheran Church of this country, a man of rare learning, at home no less in the old than in modern theology, and, what is of greatest import, whole-heartedly devoted to the pure doctrine of our Church, as he had learned to understand it, a noble man and without guile.2 But Krauth’s pathway to this kind of informed Confessionalism was not an easy one. -

The Hymnody of Andreas Rudman in New Sweden, Delaware (1696-1708) by Kim-Eric Williams 1 It could be expected that so visionary a King as Gustavus Adolphus (1594-1632) would consider expanding Swedish trade and influence in the Western hemisphere. By 1632 a company had been charted that would be called the New South Company and would trade from Europe to Africa and to the West Indies. But the King’s tragic death on the battlefield that same year delayed the start of the plan and it was not until Peter Minuit was involved that plans crystallized around a project that focused on the Delaware Valley. Leaving Gothenburg in November 1637, two vessels, the Kalmar Nyckel and the Fogel Grip made their way across the Atlantic to the Caribbean and arrived in the Delaware Bay on what the Dutch called the South River in March of 1638. On a shelf of rocks that extended into the Minquas Kill, now the Christina River in Wilmington, they landed and established Ft. Christina, named for their new Queen. This was the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley. More than 600 persons on eleven different ships came to the colony between 1638 and 1655.1 The colony became a Royal venture with only Swedish investors. On the second voyage of the Kalmar Nyckel in 1640 was Torkil Reorus, appointed as chaplain to the detachment at Ft. Christina. He was the first regularly appointed clergy in the entire area and served until his early death in 1643.2 He would have conducted regular 1 Peter Stebbins Craig. -

It is also used by Presbyterians, Methodists, and Congregationalists. The theological specifics of this creed appear to have been originally formulated as a refutation of Gnosticism, an early heresy. This can be seen in almost every phrase. For example, the creed states that Christ, Jesus, was born, suffered, and died on the cross. This seems to be a statement directly against the heretical teaching that Christ only appeared to become man and that he did not truly suffer and die but only appeared to do so. The Apostles' Creed, as well as other baptismal creeds, is esteemed as an example of the apostles' teachings and a defense of the Gospel of Christ. The name of the Creed comes from the probably fifth-century legend that, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit after Pentecost, each of the Twelve Apostles dictated part of it.[2] It is traditionally divided into twelve articles. Because of its early origin, it does not address some Christological issues defined in the later Nicene and other Christian Creeds. It thus says nothing explicitly about the divinity of either Jesus or of the Holy Spirit. -
