Clarke One wonders why the Society came to be founded in the particular year of 1869. Why not, for instance, in 1859 or 1879? One thing which must have contributed greatly to the interest in Natural History about that time was the meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science which took place in Norwich in August and September of 1868 with that famous East Anglian Botanist, J. D. Hooker, as President. The meeting lasted from 19th August to 26th August in the presence of many of the greatest names of Victorian Science. After the meeting had finished came the excursions, to Holkham, to Breydon and Burgh Castle. Another possible reason for the founding of the Society at this time may have been the death in November 1868 of Thomas Brightwell, Esq. at the age of 81. This may sound a strange reason but for the previous fifteen years Brightwell had been the leading figure in the Microscopical Society, whose limited membership included many of the best naturalists in the Norwich of that time. Brightwell was the very doyen of natural history in Norwich, magistrate, councillor, a Vice President of the British Association. For any Naturalists’ Society to survive would have been impossible without his support - and his support was for microscopy. The first meeting of that Society was held in 1852 at the home of the Rev. J. Crompton, the same who was to become the first president of the Naturalists’ Society. From the time of the founding of the Naturalists’ Society the Miscroscopical Society slowly declined and in 1884 was wound up due to lack of interest. The rise and fall of societies in Victorian Norfolk was mentioned by the Rev. J. Crompton in his first address to the Naturalists’ Society. He said, “Some of us tried to stir up the Norwich people and one after another these societies arose and died away, each rotting and adding something to the soil. It may be the fate of this Society to die also and, if so, we shall leave a nice little debris for other people's benefit afterwards”. This was happily not the fate of the Society and again one asks why. What was so different which prevented it joining the Science Gossip Club, the Meteorological Society and the Geological Society in the limbo of lost support? A number of different factors must have contributed to the Society’s success.

    NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service 2 NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service History and Background The systematic collecting of photographs of Norfolk really began in 1913 when the Norfolk Photographic Survey was formed, although there are many images in the collection which date from shortly after the invention of photography (during the 1840s) and a great deal which are late Victorian. In less than one year over a thousand photographs were deposited in Norwich Library and by the mid- 1990s the collection had expanded to 30,000 prints and a similar number of negatives. The devastating Norwich library fire of 1994 destroyed around 15,000 Norwich prints, some of which were early images. Fortunately, many of the most important images were copied before the fire and those copies have since been purchased and returned to the library holdings. In 1999 a very successful public appeal was launched to replace parts of the lost archive and expand the collection. Today the collection (which was based upon the survey) contains a huge variety of material from amateur and informal work to commercial pictures. This includes newspaper reportage, portraiture, building and landscape surveys, tourism and advertising. There is work by the pioneers of photography in the region; there are collections by talented and dedicated amateurs as well as professional art photographers and early female practitioners such as Olive Edis, Viola Grimes and Edith Flowerdew. More recent images of Norfolk life are now beginning to filter in, such as a village survey of Ashwellthorpe by Richard Tilbrook from 1977, groups of Norwich punks and Norfolk fairs from the 1980s by Paul Harley and re-development images post 1990s.

The bibliography does not include newspaper obituaries, government documents, or citations to brief entries in general biographical sources. Items are listed alphabetically by author, and then chronologically by date of publication under a legend that includes the full name of the individual, his/her date of birth in European style(day, month in roman numeral, year), followed by his/her place of birth, then his date of death and place of death. Entries are in author-editor style following the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 14th ed., 1993). Citations are annotated to list the language if it is not obvious from the text. Diversity of Norwegian sea slugs (Nudibranchia): new species to Norwegian coastal waters and new data on distribution of rare species. Fauna norvegica 32: 45-52. A total of 5 nudibranch species are reported from the Norwegian coast for the first time (Doridoxa ingolfiana, Goniodoris castanea, Onchidoris sparsa, Eubranchus rupium and Proctonotus mucro- niferus). In addition 10 species that can be considered rare in Norwegian waters are presented with new information (Lophodoris danielsseni, Onchidoris depressa, Palio nothus, Tritonia griegi, Tritonia lineata, Hero formosa, Janolus cristatus, Cumanotus beaumonti, Berghia norvegica and Calma glau- coides), in some cases with considerable changes to their distribution. These new results present an update to our previous extensive investigation of the nudibranch fauna of the Norwegian coast from 2005, which now totals 87 species. An increase in several new species to the Norwegian fauna and new records of rare species, some with considerable updates, in relatively few years results mainly from sampling effort and contributions by specialists on samples from poorly sampled areas. doi: 10.5324/fn.v31i0.1576. Its discovery on a barnacle (Semibalanus cariosus) from a derelict floating dock originating at Misawa, Honshu, confirms the capability of successful transoceanic dispersal for this species. We compare our specimens to Stechow’s syntype material of S. mutsuensis in collections at the Zoologische Staatssammlung München, and designate a lectotype and paralectotype of the species. The day started off with a visit to the nearby boatyard operated by Fox Narrow Boats where we were met by Paula Syred, daughter of the late Charlie Fox who had established the business in 1959. Members were given an interesting presentation of how the company had developed before looking round the marina and being able to inspect two of the current hire boats – Leisurely Fox and Silver Fox - both of which looked extremely smart. And then it was back to St. Marys where we were fortunate in being able to look round the recently restored church that had suffered an arson attack four years ago. Members then enjoyed an excellent luncheon laid on by Margaret Martin and her team before turning to the formal business of the day. 2 The Director’s Report and Accounts for the year ending 30 June 2013 were duly, approved before Alan Faulkner, David Mercer and Jeff Walters were re-elected as Directors and John Cordran was re-elected as Accounts Scrutineer. Chris Black then gave a full report about the progress on the North Walsham & Dilham Canal and the meeting concluded with a report by Chairman Roger which centred round the Environment Agency’s reduction in dredging and maintenance.
