Journal of Borneo-Kalimantan. Vol 4(1) 2018 JOURNAL OF BORNEO-KALIMANTAN(JBK) What Issues Matter to Local Voters, and Why?: Electoral Politics in Ranau, Sabah Arnold Puyok1* 1Faculty of Social Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, 94300 Kota Samarahan, Sarawak *Corresponding author Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This research was an attempt to gauge the electorates‘ opinion on key electoral issues in Ranau, Sabah. It involved 712 respondents from the state constituencies of Kundasang, Paginatan and Karanaan. A survey questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale was distributed to the respondents. The respondents were asked on electoral issues ranging from primordial sentiments, personality politics, patronage politics, regional sentiments, development, economy and governance. The research theoretical framework is based on the sociological, psychological, and economic models of voting behaviour. The research found that race and religious considerations have less influence on the people’s voting decisions and are unlikely to feature prominently in the upcoming elections. However, electoral issues based on regional sentiments related to Sabah’s state of affairs remain very popular among the respondents. The politics of personality formed on the basis of patrimonial, cultural and patronage ties is also evident, suggesting that the role of the candidate is more important than the role of the party in influencing people’s voting decisions. The ruling government is viewed less favourably on the issue of governance and economy, indicating that local and national issues are equally important in shaping Ranau’s, and Sabah’s political landscape. Keywords: Electoral politics, voting behavior, Kadazandusun, Ranau, Sabah INTRODUCTION Sabah is one of the states in the federation of Malaysia.

Including Chinese though majority voted Warisan DE 8.10.2020 Published on: Thursday, October 08, 2020 By: Bernama Text Size: Romzi LABUAN: The absence of Chinese representation in the new Sabah Government is not something that cannot be set right, according to analysts. They reason that a Chinese individual can be selected to fill one of the six posts of Nominated Assemblyman that the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition can create as per the Sabah Constitution. And they feel a special portfolio can be set up, such as Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department in charge of the Chinese community’s interests. Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) political analyst, Dr Romzi Ationg, said the new government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor can appoint a technocrat or professional as a Nominated Assemblyman and Cabinet Minister. “We want to see a state government that is multiracial and a diverse Cabinet to ensure no particular race in the State is marginalised. The Chinese community deserves a voice in the Cabinet. I strongly believe the newly-appointed Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor is not going to abandon or forsake any community,” he said in an interview. Romzi said the Sabah Government can emulate the Federal Government initiative of appointing former banker Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz as a Senator and the Finance Minister. The Chinese business community has long been Sabah’s economic pillar and plays a crucial role in the economic development of the State, he said. “We must not marginalise any race in Sabah as it will only create disharmony among the multiracial people here and will have an impact on the people’s integration, socially and economically, in the long run.

Kajian Malaysia, Vol. 32, Supp. 2, 2014, 171–206 KELANGSUNGAN DOMINASI BARISAN NASIONAL DI SABAH DALAM PILIHAN RAYA UMUM KE-13 THE CONTINUING DOMINANCE OF BARISAN NASIONAL IN SABAH IN THE 13TH GENERAL ELECTIONS Asmady Idris1* and Suzalie Mohamad2 1,2International Relations Programme, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, 88400 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia *Corresponding author: [email protected] Artikel ini cuba membincangkan perkembangan politik Sabah dalam Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-13 (PRU13) dengan memfokus kepada kelangsungan dominasi hegemoni Barisan Nasional (BN) dan penambahan kerusi oleh pihak pembangkang di Sabah. Kata kunci: Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-13, hegemoni-federalisme, politik pembangunan, Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Rakyat The article deals with Sabah political developments after the just concluded 13th General Election.
