GEELONG REGION [T CROSS.COUNTRY TEAM (t NEWSLETTER q.$, lssue # 23 Oct. 20A2 GEELONG MEN CONSOLIDATE Magher, who battled on bravely for I kilometres before wisely part FIFTH PLACE AT A HOT AND WINDY deciding that discretion was the better of valour. BURNLEY HALF MARATHON BURNLEY HALF MARATHON A small but determined band of Geelong athletes made the trek up (Sunday 1 Sth September) the Melbourne Road to contest the last race of the Athletics Victoria Winter Season, the Burnley Half Marathon. At stake was MEN'S OPEN HALF MARATHON not only individual pride in performance but also a top five placing Darren Riviere 33rd 75.56 in the prestigious Division One Men's Team Competition. Geoffrey Purnell 64th 81.48 And with a top temperature ol26 degrees with gusty norlherly Paul Wilson 152nd 90.35 winds forecast, the 21.1 kilometre course along the Yarra River Neil MacDonald 173rd 92.54 needed to be treated with respect. Simon Watson D.N.F. Geelong's'marathon man', Darren Riviere was using the Burnley Fastest - GWoyecha (Doncaster) - 65.04 race as a tune-up run before the Melbourne Marathon and was - M Michelsson (Collingwood) - 65.24 planning to 'roll home' in a relatively comfortable 75 - 76 minutes - S Nankervis (Ballarat YCW) - 65.45 - 'marathon pace' for Darren. Perfect, thought Geoffrey Purnell - - P Sly (Peninsula R.R.) - 65.53 Darren can act as pace-maker for me as I'm hoping to run at a - J Meagher (Box Hill) - 67.45 similar pace for the first ten kilometres. Well, it was a great plan in - D Wilson (Old Scotch) - 68.23 theory but once the gun was fired, a slightly less hirsute Geoff - P Wilson (Old Scotch) - 69.50 took off like a startled rabbit and flew through the first three - G Guzzo (lnv.) - 70.06 kilometres in 10 minutes and 30 seconds (for a projected finish - N Cope (lnv.) - 70.26 time of under 74 minutes!) - T Coady (Glenhuntly) - 70.29 Understandably, Geoff did slow a little as the race progressed but - G Lyons (Old Scotch) - 71.08 still finished with a very respectable time and placing. - N Harrison (Glenhuntly) - 71.33 lncidently, Geoff was the only senior Geelong athlete to compete - D Eadie (Glenhuntly) - 71.36 in every 2002 Athletics Victoria Winter Season race. Great effort - D Ruschena (Glenhuntly) - 71.40 and a fabulous commitment to the team, Geoff. - J Atkinson (Aths. Waverley) - 71.42 - R McGuire-White (Glenhuntly) - 71.52 Despite trying to'pace' his good mate from 50 metres behind, - P Bowes (South Melb.) - 72.07 Darren Riviere was eventually able to reel in the overly optimistic - G Olden (Box Hill) - 72.24 Purnell. He then picked up the pace over the last few kilometres in - P Hulbert (Glenhuntly) - 73.1A a great marathon trial. Well done, Darren and all the best for the - R Schwerkolt (Old Scotch) - 73.11 Melbourne Marathon on October 13. WOMEN'S OPEN HALF MARATHON Quite often, athletes not suited to or not ready to race the longer lnge Magher D.N.F. events run them at an easy long run training pace to help with team points. Such was the case with Paul Wilson, who ran comfortably Fastest - H Stanton (Ballarat YCW) - 81.21 over the undulating Yarra Boulevard Course. Leading the Sunday 13 May way was Geelong Team debutant, Andre La Gerche, A small but determined squad of Geelong athletes who impressively got stronger on each of the three celebrated Mother’s Day morning by travelling to La laps to be first Geelong athlete home in an creditable Trobe University to contest the 15 kilometre and 5 50.47. Coles has funded over $500,000 in grants to participate and compete. I have to say I was quite humbled our local Centres which I am sure you all would agree has been by the way the Centres all just stepped up and made it work beneficial. despite the COVID-19 restrictions and protocols, once again you have all displayed a great level of dedication to the sport, and I I would also like to thank Glen Taylor, a board member that thank you for that. I would also like to thank the staff at LANSW is not returning.
