    The Newspaper of Five Towns College, Dix Hills, New York April 2017 BROADCASTING FIVE TOWNS by Giancarlo Estrada There are a lot of changes going on around campus. So far the college has redone the gym floors, revived the athletics program, and converted the Career Services office into a new radio station, leaving behind what Mass Communications may have considered a broom closet. This improvement has given students and faculty the ability to transmit their ideas, music, and podcasts via the use of professional equipment. Before these improvements, Mass Communication students learned the theoretical aspects of their major without the ability to practically apply what they have learned within a school environment. The new radio and televi- sion stations, partnering with the athletic program, allow students to work in an environment that replicates a profes- sional setting.     Mike D’s Top Tracks of December 1. Bad Bad Hats “Midway” I was turned on to Minneapolis’ Bad Bad Hats thankfully by my friend Will Noon (from the band fun. / Straylight Run). What separates Bad Bad Hats from the other indie bands in the scene is Kerry Alexander’s larger-than-the-room vocals. This track, off their debut LP Psychic Reader, will be stuck in your head for days after three listens, and she shines in it. The songwriting reminds me a lot of Liz Phair, and the record also leans on other ’90s alt rock icons like The Breeders, PJ Harvey and Letters To Cleo. The record was named one of the indie albums of 2015 by Buzzfeed. I HATE Buzzfeed and its lowest common denominator reporting, but they got this one right. Bad Bad Hats play the Sinclair in Cambridge, MA on February 5. 2. Beach Slang “I Break Guitars” Here comes another big indie breakout artist of 2015. Their debut The Things We Do To Find People Who Like Us seems to be on every rock critic’s top end-of-the-year list and it damn well should be. Punk rock ‘n’ roll isn’t supposed to reinvent the wheel, but when it’s done this right, it feels like it does. This record shows a shit load of promise for the Philadelphia band and this track is my favorite off of it. I generally get bummed when I hear bands or songs that people tell me are influenced by the Replacements, but “I Break Guitars” is the exception.

If I were to make a pie chart, I would put it at a 5% chance of brilliance, 50% chance of medocrity, 20% of him not showing up, 25% of a figurative car crash. I would be happy with either brilliance or car crash. Earlier this month we came close to losing DMX when he was found unconscious after an apparent overdose. While you would imagine that would slow down most performers, DMX apparently has already been back on the road. Hopefully he took it as a moment to become scared straight and stays with us for a long time. Regardless of what happens, buzz is crazy for this and there should be a lot of heads looking to find out what DMX is gonna give you. 2. Exploiting this emotion, the video will highlight the futility of violence and leave the audience thinking about the humanity that often gets left out of the story of the senseless act. One thing that will set this apart from other videos is that instead of just syncing the song, I want to keep in some of the production sound from the fighting, falling, and chasing low in the mix. Style: The video for "Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck) will be presented in all black and white. There will be no special effects and we will rely mostly on natural lighting; it needs to be real and authentic. The pace of the video will be largely determined by the actors, and thus we will not rely on quick edits to keep the narrative (visually and continuity-wise) moving forward. This aesthetic will help sell the raw emotion of the video. The camera will never judge our actors and I want it to have a very cinema verite´ type of feel during much of the action.
