Biological Diversity
From the Editors’ Desk….. Biodiversity, which is defined as the variety and variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes in which they occur, is measured at three levels – the gene, the species, and the ecosystem. Forest is a key element of our terrestrial ecological systems. They comprise tree- dominated vegetative associations with an innate complexity, inherent diversity, and serve as a renewable resource base as well as habitat for a myriad of life forms. Forests render numerous goods and services, and maintain life-support systems so essential for life on earth. India in its geographical area includes 1.8% of forest area according to the Forest Survey of India (2000). The forests cover an actual area of 63.73 million ha (19.39%) and consist of 37.74 million ha of dense forests, 25.51 million ha of open forest and 0.487 million ha of mangroves, apart from 5.19 million ha of scrub and comprises 16 major forest groups (MoEF, 2002). India has a rich and varied heritage of biodiversity covering ten biogeographical zones, the trans-Himalayan, the Himalayan, the Indian desert, the semi-arid zone(s), the Western Ghats, the Deccan Peninsula, the Gangetic Plain, North-East India, and the islands and coasts (Rodgers; Panwar and Mathur, 2000). India is rich at all levels of biodiversity and is one of the 12 megadiversity countries in the world. India’s wide range of climatic and topographical features has resulted in a high level of ecosystem diversity encompassing forests, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, coastal and marine ecosystems, each with a unique assemblage of species (MoEF, 2002). -
Ethnomedicinal Investigation on Primitive Tribal Groups of Eastern Ghats, Koyyuru Mandal, Visakhapatnam District, South India

The aim of the present study is to enumerate the ethnomedicinal information from PTGs (Primitive tribal groups) of Koyyuru Mandal, Visakhapatnam District, North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, India. Ethnomedicinal plant information has been collected through several field trips and also by means of personal interviews from local tribal people/doctors. Based on the conference from the local tribal doctors and through discussions with them, a total number of 74 ethnomedicinal plant species with 70 genera of 43 families used to treat a total number of 59 diseases were collected. A small number of plants were used as medicine directly and remaining plants are used in mix together with other plant species. The significant use of each ethnomedicinal plant was obtained in consideration of available information from the local tribal doctors. Most frequently the plant leaves were used for preparing ethnomedicine. It is evident that the collected ethnomedicinal plants have significant medicinal value for one or more diseases. Fewer plants were noticed intended for healing two or more therapeutic values. Application of gymnemic acid (GA) on the tongue depresses the taste of sucrose in man. This effect, as indicated by electrophysiological responses, has been found to be absent in three non- human primate species. In the present behavioral study the effect of GA on taste responses in 22 primate species, with two subspecies, and 12 human subjects has been investigated. In all the non- human primates studied, including the Pongidae which are closely related to man, GA did not sup- press the response to sucrose, only in man did GA have a depressing effect. Introduction In 1847, in a communication to the Linnean Society of London, mention was made for the first time of a particular property of a plant native to India belong- ing to the Asclepiadaceae: 'A further communication, from a letter written by Mr Edgeworth, dated Banda, 30th August, 1847, was made to the meeting, reporting a remarkable effect produced by the leaves of Gymnema sylvestris R.Br. upon the sense of taste, in reference to diminishing the perception of saccharin flavours'. Further details relating to the effect of these leaves were given by Falconer (1847/48). -

It contained eight relatively large seeds (some dissected ovaries contained up to 10 ovules) and was extremely smelly when opened. In fact, when damaged all parts of the plant give off the unpleas ant foetid odour characteristic of Kedrostis. Meeuse men tions that C. humifructus is dispersed by antbears. I have, though, noticed no particular concentrations of K. psammophila around the groundsquirrel warrens which are common in the sandier parts of Namaqualand and its seeds may be dispersed by moles. This constitutes a direct threat to quality oflife ofthe resource-poor rural households who directly depend on them and to ecological integrity. It is also recognised that the declining tree resources, particularly the high value indigenous tree species, are increasingly threatened by a number ofgrowing subsistence demands. This emphasised the need to cultivate and conserve high-value tree species such as Englerophytum natalense, Ptaeroxylon obliquum and Millettia grandis on-farm in Umzimvubu District. Agroforestry is recognised as a viable option for optimising land productivity, reducing pressure on the indigenous forests, ensuring a sustainable supply ofdesired tree products and services and improving the quality oflife ofthe resource-poor rural households. This Thesis examines whether agroforestry in Umzimvubu District and similar areas ofSouth Africa has the potential for addressing these needs. It recognises that for successful initiation, implementation and adoption, agroforestry should be considered at two levels, namely, household and institutional. -

Yogananda Bhoyroo Vishwakalyan Faculty of Agriculture University of Mauritius Jhumka Zayd Forestry Service Ministry of Agro-Industry (Mauritius) Abstract The status of the Mauritian forest is alarming with deforestation and invasive alien species deeply affecting the indigenous flora. Therefore, major conservation strategies are needed to save the remaining endemic tree species. Explants form three endemic tree species Elaeocarpus bojeri, Foetidia mauritiana and Sideroxylon grandiflorum were grown under in vitro conditions. These species are rareand Elaeocarpus bojeri has been classified as critically endangered. Thidiazuron (TDZ) and 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) were used as growth promoters in order to stimulate seed germination, callus induction. Half strength Murashige and Skoog’s (MS) media supplemented with coconut water, activated charocoal and phytagel were used as growth media. Hormone levels of TDZ were 0.3mg/l and 0.6mg/l while BAP level was at 1mg/l. Germination rate for E.bojeri was low (5%) with TDZ 0.3mg/l. Sideroxylon grandiflorum seeds showed no response to in vitro culture, while F mauritiana showed successful callus induction with TDZ 0.6mg/l and 0.3mg/l.
