History is a search for the ultimate truth , an understanding which would end the search for any further explanation. Many of you may feel disturbed with such a content. In fact, many of you may feel this statement to be very subjective. Indeed you may opine that history is all about alternative explanations, choice of one explanation over the others with justification. In this short editorial an attempt is being made to explore, ‘History as Truth’. History like any other discipline can never be dealt in isolation; however, it may seem so. It is not even a distinct part of the whole, it is indeed the whole itself- both temporally and spatially. Why all search in history may be partial yet the partial search always can be of the whole only. -

BLM #1 STUDENT/TEACHER RESOURCE ATI 3M: ODISSI DANCE Odissi dance is the typical classical dance form of Orissa and has its origin in the temples. The rhythm, the bhangis and mudras used in Odissi dance have a distinctive quality of their own. Odissi dance deals largely with the love theme of Radha and Krishna. It is a lyrical form of dance with its subtlety as its keynote. The intimate relationship experienced between the poetry and music in Odissi is a feature on which the aesthetics of the style is built. It is a "sculpturesque" style of dance with a harmony of line and movement, all its own. The history of Odissi dates back to somewhere between the 8th and the 11th century when the kings took great pride in excelling in the arts of dance and music. It is during these centuries that inscriptions referring to "Devdasis,” the women who worshipped the deity, were carved at the Brahmeshwar temple. "Devdasis" apparently played an important part in the temple ritual and were required to perform from early evening to the bedtime of Lord Jagannath, the temple deity of Puri. Jayadeva's "Geeta-Govinda,” the bible of an Odissi dancer, written in the 12th century, has stupendous influence on the arts of Orissa. The "Ashtapadis" were marked with specific ragas and talas. Around the 15th century, during the reign of Surya Dynasty, the element of "abhinaya" or expressional dance entered Odissi. During the same time Maheshwar Mahapatra wrote his "Abhinaya Chandrika,” an elaborate treatise on Odissi dance style, which is still used by dancers today. -

OHRJ, Vol. XLVII, No. 3 ART HERITAGE OF ORISSA Gitarani Praharaj & Chittaranjan Mallia Orissa has witnessed ceaseless human endeavour in the field of art, craft, sculpture and temple building activities for about 2500 years during her recorded history. Endowed with nature’s beauty and bounty, Orissa boasts of a rich cultural heritage and tradition of music, dance, dramatics, art & crafts of many splendoured varieties and forms; which elegantly emanate from its magnificent monuments, ancient caves, rock-cut sculptures and innumerable temples found still intact with all its prestine glory and grandeur. This holy land with a hoary past, offers the quintessence of the multifaceted cultural profiles of Indian panorama. Art in all its myriad forms is so deeply ingrained in this state that the routine chores of the folk styles take sublime aesthetic expression of magnificent diction in intangible performing art idioms. Prehistoric & Protohistoric: The wooded hinterland of the state beyond Eastern Ghats is the store house of earliest rock paintings. At Ushakothi and Manikmunda in Sundargarh district, Bikramkhol in Jharsuguda district and Gudahandi and Yogimath in Kalahandi, there are upper Paleolithic rock paintings (in red ochre or Hematite) and rock bruising. The painting on the facade of a cave at Gudahandi is exuberantly realistic. The hunting scene of a man throwing a stone missile at a running bison is of high artistic excellence. Maurya, Meghavahana and Gupta Art tradition: The history of Orissan art and architecture is corelated with her early history which starts from 261 B.C., when Ashok conqured Orissa, then known as Kalinga. The earliest specimen of Orissan art is the colossal figure of the foreport of an elephant carved on the top of the boulder containing Ashoka’s edicts at Dhauli about five miles from Bhubaneswar. -

A sweeping look at the magnificence of the Indian women through the forms, characteristics, challenges and changes occurred and are still occurring in traditional dance, forms the theoretical and pictorial substance of this study. At one level, it is a historical compendium of classical dance, an exploration of its’ moods and majesty, an ode to its sublime aesthetics and at another level, it is a stunning scholarly portrayal of a pluralistic society teeming with feminine cultural vitality. Introduction According to Natyashastra or the treatise of Classical Dance “The Body should catch up to the tune, the hands must explain the meaning, the eyes must speak the emotion, and the feet must beat the time-measure” [1]. Bharatha’s Natyashastra which is popularly styled as Panchama Veda [2] speaks about 108 dance postures which constitute the basic structure of any classical dance and women whose mind as well as physic that is best suitable for this dance divine, naturally inclined towards dance from the inception of this universe. Women of India succeeded in developing an individual style which is a blend of the typical features of many Paramparas with the distinct stamp of their individuality. Basically, there are two types of dancing – Theatrical Dancing and then Social Dancing. -

THE DEBAPRASAD DAS TRADITION: RECONSIDERING THE NARRATIVE OF CLASSICAL INDIAN ODISSI DANCE HISTORY PAROMITA KAR A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN DANCE STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO DECEMBER 2013 @PAROMITA KAR, 2013 ii Abstract This dissertation is dedicated to theorizing the Debaprasad Das stylistic lineage of Indian classical Odissi dance. Odissi is one of the seven classical Indian dance forms recognized by the Indian government. Each of these dance forms underwent a twentieth century “revival” whereby it was codified and recontextualized from pre-existing ritualistic and popular movement practices to a performance art form suitable for the proscenium stage. The 1950s revival of Odissi dance in India ultimately led to four stylistic lineage branches of Odissi, each named after the corresponding founding pioneer of the tradition. I argue that the theorization of a dance lineage should be inclusive of the history of the lineage, its stylistic vestiges and philosophies as embodied through its aesthetic characteristics, as well as its interpretation, and transmission by present-day practitioners. In my theorization of the Debaprasad Das lineage of Odissi, I draw upon Pierre Bourdieu's theory of the habitus, and argue that Guru Debaprasad Das's vision of Odissi dance was informed by the socio-political backdrop of Oriya nationalism, in the context of which he choreographed, but also resisted the heavy emphasis on coastal Oriya culture of the Oriya nationalist movement. My methodology for the project has been ethnographic, supported by original archival research. -

An unexpected beep or ring in the middle of the performance will distract the audience members and the performers! ❖ Remember to respond appropriately and at the correct times. Make sure you pay attention at all times, to let the performer know you are engaged in their performance. They will also let you know what is appropriate and what is not. Some performers will want a lot of audience interaction and some will want none. Make sure you know what is appropriate for the performance you are seeing. -

The Somavamsis accepted the Varnashrama dharma i.e., traditional division of the society into four Varnas (Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra), and gave the highest status to the Brahmanas. By performing Vedic sacrifices and facilitating the migration of Brahrnanas from northern India through generous offer of land grants the Somavamsi rulers promoted the Brahminisation of the socio-religious life of Odisha as well as the assimilation of the north Indian Sanskritic culture into the Odishan culture. Women enjoyed respectable status in the Somavamsi society. Some of the Somavamsi queens performed important works like the construction of temples. The Queen Kolavatidevi, the mother of Udyota Keshari constructed the Brahmeswar temple at Bhubaneswar. Nevertheless, the status of women appears to have degenerated during this period. The Devadasi practice (the practice of dedicating maidens to the temples) and prostitution were prevalent during this period. The last Somavamsi king, Karnadeva married a dancing girl, named Karpurasri who was born of a Mahari or Devadasi. -

Famous Classical Dances of India Indian classical dance, or Shastriya Nritya, is an umbrella term for various performance arts rooted in religious Hindu musical theatre styles, whose theory and practice can be traced to the Sanskrit text Natya Shastra.The number of recognized classical dances range from eight to more, depending on the source and scholar.The Sangeet Natak Akademi recognizes eight – Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Sattriya, Manipuri and Mohiniyattam.[8] Scholars such as Drid Williams add Chhau, Yakshagana and Bhagavata Mela to the list.The Culture Ministry of the Government of India includes Chhau in its classical list. These dances are traditionally regional, all of them include music and recitation in local language or Sanskrit, and they represent a unity of core ideas in a diversity of styles, costumes and expression.
