This time around, I’m trying to come to terms with the fact that a) it’s already July, b) it’s somehow winter in the southern hemisphere… again, and c) I’ve just celebrated my 30th birthday. Wasn’t Christmas only a few weeks ago? These times when I sit and reflect are always a reminder that life moves quickly. Let’s not take it for granted. For some, the momentous occasion of turning the big three-zero can cause confusion and dread. For me? Surprisingly, it was the opposite. While I’m not huge on celebrating my own birthday (perhaps that’s the reserved Cancerian in me) I welcomed the new chapter with friends and family; those who have helped shape me into the woman I am today. I gifted myself a couple of days off and allowed myself to reflect on the years that have passed. Was I where I wanted to be? Have I achieved what I set out to do? My honest answer: not necessarily… However, my vision of the future had morphed into something entirely different; one that 20-year-old me hadn’t even dreamed of yet. To me, these are important questions to ask, but not as important as this one: Am I happy? And to that I can answer a resounding yes. I’ve realised a 20-year-old’s view of what 30 looks like is not realistic. Over the past 10 years, my goals have shifted, my attitude has changed and thanks to a huge decade of personal and business growth, I’m excited to welcome this new chapter with open arms. Wherever I’m going, I’m ready. While I hope you won’t physically notice my more mature age (I’m still yet to spot a grey, win!) you may notice a change with this publication. Just like me, it’s grown up, with our first ever star gracing the cover — international supermodel Shanina Shaik. Humble and elegant in every way, we were lucky enough to get to know our Aussie brunette beauty, and we think you’ll be equally in awe of her and her incredible journey, which you’ll find on page 36. It’s a perplexing topic; one that us mere mortals know very little about. Unless life has THE RENAISSANCE thrown you a curveball, and you’ve found yourself with some kind of health ailment requiring Mregular appointments, constant upkeep and diet overhauls, OF NATURAL it’s not something you need to investigate. But medicine — and more generally, the interest in wellbeing — is changing. Young, fit and healthy people are trading in their normal REMEDIES routines for a more wholesome life. They’re shopping at farmer’s markets, they’re giving up alcohol, and they’re beginning to explore alternative therapies. As this happens, With chronic illness and a dependency on prescription one question continuously echoes: do natural remedies actually work? medicines fast becoming a global health epidemic, mounting evidence reveals that more of us are returning to our roots than In the era of conscious consumption, the resurgence of natural remedies and modern apothecary has been a hard ever before – both literally and figuratively. one to miss. While united in the global mission to better our planet, the awareness that’s come from living a more ecologically-friendly lifestyle has since, by extension, transcended far beyond crusading for just our environment; KAITLYN SMITH writes. it’s now heavily-weighted on caring for another home so crucial to human existence – our bodies. Nonetheless, everyday ailments still rear their ugly heads, leaving many reaching for the painkillers in a desperate bid for instant relief. It makes sense; we live busy lives and thus we need a quick fix. A metaphorical Band-Aid, if you will. But while days continue as they once did, many fail to consider that those aches and pains – now only a measly afterthought - could be indicative of something far more sinister. So now, under the progressive reign of ‘Generation Health’, these unfussy, age-old practices — ones occasionally scoffed at by proponents of modern Western medicine — are rapidly becoming more mainstream; a statement only reinforced by the 68% of Australians who sought out natural therapies throughout 2018. SO WHAT ARE NATURAL REMEDIES? Recognised for its centuries of existence in India and China, the ancient practice of herbal medicine and modern apothecary centres around natural solutions derived from the earth, in lieu of their western pharmaceutical counterpart. Boasting a curriculum vitae to rival any synthetic drug, a natural remedy’s ability to strengthen the immune system and improve general levels of wellness has long been proven to aid the prevention and recovery of hair loss, acne breakouts, aches and pains and even mild to moderate burns. Herbalists, more commonly known as naturopaths, lean wholly upon a holistic approach to treating illness; viewing the body as one undivided, intrinsically linked organism rather than separate entities suffering their own uncorrelated conditions. » HEALTH / ISSUE TWELVE 10 A CONSCIOUS COLLECTION In keeping with traditional practices, deaths by prescription drug abuse undergo extensive boiling, harnessing the use of natural herbs and plant tragically escalating by a staggering the ingredients to extract their active derivatives – leaves, flowers, even roots 62% in just under a decade. principles.
