Principal, Tezpur 12 Inaugurator of the Event College, Tezpur, Assam and President of Sadou Assam Lekhika Samaroh 12 Introduction and objective of At present the whole world is going through a very the Event critical time due to the pandemic caused by the covid- 19 virus. All the continents are affected by the virus. Started in Yuhan Province of China it spreaded all over the world within a very short period of time. Several lakhs of people were affected and a few lakhs had been died already. Not only the poor but even the most powerful and advanced nations have to bow down before the virus. Scientists are looking for vaccine and effective treatments of the disease but without success. Till now masks and physical distance with use of sanitizer is considered as the most effective way to keep away from the virus. Due to its novelty a large number of myths have developed. In most of the cases these myths are far from truth enhancing the chances of creating a fear psychosis among the masses. In such a situation it is the duty of the people all over the world to know the truth about Covid-19 and to stop the myths created by some unscientific thinking. This International Webinar was organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Rangapara College to create awareness against the false myths a nd to develop a sense of scientific approach to the Covid19 Pandemic. Key Highlights of the Event: See enclosure 1 13 Summary of the event Feedback by the participants: See enclosure 2 14 No. Participant attended 321: List of Participants: See enclose 3 (Dr. Ranjan Kalita) Principal Rangapara College Enclosure 1 International Webinar on “Fact & Fiction-Myths & Truth about COVID-19” Organized by- IQAC, Rangapara College Date: 31-07-2020 An international Webinar on “Fact & Fiction-Myths & Truth about COVID-19” was organized by the IQAC, Rangapara College on 31st July, 2020. The one & half hour lasting Webinar was marked tremendous response from the participants & the expertise presentation of Dr. Ritu Kumar Mishra, the International Civil Servant, UNO made the entire session lively and interactive. Earlier, the Webinar was formally inaugurated by Dr. Charu Saharia Nath, Retired Principal, Tezpur College & President, Sadou Asom Lekhika Samaroh while Dr. Ranjan Kalita, Principal delivered the welcome address. Key highlights of the Webinar Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. This Corona Virus (Covid-19) has jumped from Bat to Pangolin and Pangolin to human body. It has 97% of strain from Bat and 3% strain from pangolin. Bats are host to a diverse range of coronaviruses, and the transfer of viruses to humans involved intermediate hosts, Civet in case of Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS- CoV) and camels in the case of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV). The Fatality Rate of its first outbreak i.e., Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS- CoV) (2002-04) in China was 9.2%, in second outbreak i.e. Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV) (2012, 15, 18) in Middle East it was 37% & in its third outbreak in China i.e., Covid-19 it is 6%. But in Indian current scenario, the rate is below 3% as India. But this rate may be affected by improper reporting as well as less number of testing per million population. The global Fatality rate among men is 2.8% & among women, it is 1.7%. Belgium records the Highest Fatality Rate (16.3%) & Russia records the lowest Fatality Rate(.98%). COVID-19 is highly infectious & recently it is confirmed by the WHO that the Virus can survive in the air up to 10 minutes. No vaccine has yet been available to fight against the Virus; University of Oxford and China are on the Stage-IV of Clinical Trial. Indian effort to introduce the same is still on the preliminary stage. Smoking impairs lung function making it harder for the body to fight off coronaviruses and other respiratory diseases. Available research suggests that smokers are at higher risk of developing severe COVID-19 outcomes and death. Alcohol consumption do not prevent one from COVID-19, rather it endangers human health. Similarly, Hydroxychloroquine, Lopinavir & Ritonavir Hydroxychloroquine, Lopinavir/Ritonavir do not result in in the reduction of mortality of hospitalized COVID- 19 patients. Plasma Therapy showed promising results, but large scale randomized clinical trials have not been performed to show statistically significant result. Besides, it has also serious risk of transmitting blood-borne infections. Masks should be avoided while exercising as sweat can make mask the mask become wet more quickly which makes it difficult to breath and promotes the growth of microorganisms. The prolonged medical mask may be uncomfortable, however it does not lead to CO2 intoxication no oxygen deficiency. Similarly. Adding peeper to one’s soup & taking garlic & exposing oneself to sun do not help to prevent COVID19. Antibiotics can’t prevent or treat COVID-19. Antibiotics should not be used as means of prevention During the interactive session of the Webinar, the Resource person cleared every doubt raised by the participants & the session ended with a happy note. The webinar came to an end with the vote of thanks by Dr. Ranendra Mohan Deka, the co-ordinator, IQAC, Rangapara College. Enclosure 2 FEEDBACK BY THE PARTICIPANTS 1. Experience of the Participants 2. • (PAB) of RUSA HELD on 30Th July, 2018 the 13Th Meeting Of
MINUTES OF THE 13th MEETING OF THE PROJECT APPROVAL BOARD (PAB) OF RUSA HELD ON 30th July, 2018 The 13th meeting of the RUSA PAB was held on 30th July, 2018 at 03.00 hrs exclusively for North Eastern & the Himalayan States in India International Centre, under the Chairmanship of Sh. R. Subrahmanyam, Secretary Higher Education (HE) MHRD. The Joint Secretary, MHRD & National Mission Director (NMD), RUSA welcomed the members of the PAB and the participating States. At the outset, Secretary (HE) stated that the North-Eastern and Himalayan States have huge potential to improve the quality of higher education in their States. He sought inputs from those present in the meeting regarding the pertinent issues in these States which may be seen as bottlenecks/roadblocks on the path to improve quality in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and on the suggested remedial actions required. The States responded by stating that improving infrastructure support, quality faculty recruitment, need for change in the mindset / orientation of teachers, improvements in pedagogy, creation of research eco system are some of the key issues requiring focused attention. Language barrier, inability to generate resources by institutions, problems of connectivity (IT & transport Infrastructure) and lack of pool of trained leaders to lead institutions were also identified as some of the challenges faced by the States. After considerable deliberations and based on inputs from the representatives of the participating States, it was felt that systematic long term improvements are required for developing a lasting plan of action. It was, therefore, decided that comprehensive state wise action plan needs to be developed taking into consideration the challenges and gaps identified and a concerted plan of action be developed over the next three months with a view to improve quality of HEIs in this region.
