ABSTRACT Silicified brachiopods from the Tatonduk River area, central east- ern Alaska along the Canadian border, are possibly of late Middle or early Late Ordovician age. The assemblage closely resembles one described by Schuchert and Cooper (1930) and Cooper and Kindle (1936) from Perce, Quebec, Canada. Many elements are also pres- ent in the classical Caradoc section of Girvan, Scotland. Species of Dicoelosia, Ptychopleurella, Cyclospira, Ptychoglyptus, Diambania, and Christiania are very like those from Quebec.

BERGSTRÖM AND ANNALISA FERRETTI Conodonts in Ordovician biostratigraphy The long time interval after Pander’s (1856) original conodont study can in terms of Ordovician conodont biostratigraphic research be subdivided into three periods, namely the Pioneer Period (1856-1955), the Transition Period (1955-1971), and the Modern Period (1971-Recent). During the pre-1920s, the few published conodont investigations were restricted to Europe and North America and were not concerned about the potential use of conodonts as guide fossils. Although primarily of taxonomic nature, the pioneer studies by Branson & Mehl, Stauffer, and Furnish during the 1930s represent the beginning of the use of conodonts in Ordovician biostratigraphy. However, no formal zones were introduced until Lindström (1955) proposed four conodont zones in the Lower Ordovician of Sweden, which marks the end of the Pioneer Period. Because Lindström’s zone classification was not followed by similar work outside Baltoscandia, the time interval up to the late 1960s can be regarded as a Transition Period. A milestone symposium volume, entitled ‘Conodont Biostratigraphy’ and published in 1971, 2 summarized much new information on Ordovician conodont biostratigraphy and is taken as the beginning of the Modern Period of Ordovician conodont biostratigraphy. In this volume, the Baltoscandic Ordovician was subdivided into named conodont zones whereas the North American Ordovician succession was classified into a series of lettered or numbered Faunas. Although most of the latter did not receive zone names until 1984, this classification has been used widely in North America.

Ordovician carbonate platform ecosystem of the Holy Cross Moun tains. Palaeontologia Polonica 53, 43-128. The Ordovician organodetrital limestones and marls studied in outcrops at M6jcza and Miedzygorz, Holy Cross Mts, Poland, contains a record of the evolution of local conodont faunas from the latest Arenig (Early Kundan, Lenodus variabilis Zone) to the Ashgill (Amorphognathus ordovicicus Zone), with a single larger hiatus corre sponding to the subzones from Eop/acognathus pseudop/anu s to E. reclinatu s. The conodont fauna is Baltic in general appearance but cold water genera , like Sagitto dontina, Scabbardella, and Hamarodus, as well as those of Welsh or Chinese af finities, like Comp/exodus, Phragmodus, and Rhodesognathu s are dominant in par ticular parts of the section while others common in the Baltic region, like Periodon , Eop/acognathus, and Sca/pellodus are extremely rare. Most of the lineages continue to occur throughout most of the section enabling quantitative studies on their phyletic evolut ion. Apparatuses of sixty seven species of thirty six genera are described and illustrated. Phyletic evolution of Ba/toniodus, Amorphognathu s, Comp/exodus, and Pygodus is biometrically documented. Element s of apparatu ses are homolog ized and the standard notation system is applied to all of them. Acodontidae fam. n., Drepa nodus kie/censis sp. n., and D. santacrucensis sp. n. are proposed . • The Viruan (Middle Ordovician) of Öland
The Viruan (Middle Ordovician) of Öland By Valdar Jaanusson ABSTRACT.-The stratigraphy and lithology of the Viruan (Middle Ordovician) Iimestones of the bed-rock of Öland are described based on three bares and on field work in the outcrop area. A combined litho- and bio-stratigraphic classification (termed topo-stratigraphic) is introduced for the described sequence. The names of the Estonian stages (Aserian, Lasnamägian, Uhakuan, and Kukrusean) are used as chrono-stratigraphic references instead of the previous Swedish names of the units of stage category (Platyurus, Schroeteri, Crassicauda, and Ludibundus, re spectivcly). New topo-stratigraphic divisions are Segerstad Limestone (of Aserian age), Skärlöv, Seby, and Folkeslunda Limestones (of Lasnamägian age), Furudal, Källa, and Persnäs Lime stones (of Uhakuan age), and Dalby Limestone (of Kukrusean age in the bed-rock of Öland). The Aserian Lasnamägian topo-stratigraphic divisions have the same lithological characteris and tics throughout Öland. The Uhakuan beds are developed as calcilutites (Furudal Limestone) on southern Öland continuing as a tongue (Källa Limestone) on northern Öland. The middle and upper part of the Uhakuan beds of northern Öland consist of calcarenites (Persnäs Limestone) lithologically indistiguishable from the Kukrusean Dalby Limestone which forms the bed-rock only on northern Öland. Within the Segerstad Limestone two zones are distinguished (z. of Angelinoceras latum and z. of Illaenus planifrons).H ouvr ' s zones of Lituites discors, L. lituus, and L. perfectus are of Lasna mägian age, and their stratigraphic position and fauna! characteristics are described. Keywords: brachiopod; Changhsingian; mixed facies; extinction; taxonomy. Abstract. Although many studies have been concerned with Changhsingian brachiopod faunas in South China, brachiopod faunas of the mixed nearshore clastic-carbonate facies have not been studied in detail. In this paper, a brachiopod fauna collected from the Changhsingian Wangjiazhai Formation and the Griesbachian Yelang Formation at the Liuzhi section (Guizhou Province, South China) is described. The Liuzhi section represents mixed clastic- carbonate facies and yields 30 species of 16 genera of brachiopod. Among the described and illustrated species, new morphological features of genera Peltichia, Prelissorhynchia and Spiriferellina are provided. Because of limited materials, four undetermined species instead of new species from these three genera are proposed. The Liuzhi brachiopod fauna from lower part of the Wangjiazhai Formation shares most genera with fauna of carbonate facies in South China, and the fauna from the upper part is similar to that from the Zhongzhai and Zhongying sections, representative shallow- water clastic facies sections in Guizhou Province.

This keynote of basic research has been adhered to over the years in the issuance of thousands of titles in serial publications under the Smithsonian imprint, com mencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Annals of Flight Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes original articles and monographs dealing with the research and collections of its several museums and offices and of profes sional colleagues at other institutions of learning. These papers report newly acquired facts, synoptic interpretations of data, or original theory in specialized fields. These publications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, laboratories, and other in terested institutions and specialists throughout the world. Individual copies may be obtained from the Smithsonian Institution Press as long as stocks are available.

Introduction to the Trilobites: Morphology, Ecology, Macroevolution and More By Michelle M. Casey1, Perry Kennard2, and Bruce S. Lieberman1, 3 1Biodiversity Institute, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, 66045, 2Earth Science Teacher, Southwest Middle School, USD497, and 3Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66045 Middle level laboratory exercise for Earth or General Science; supported provided by National Science Foundation (NSF) grants DEB-1256993 and EF-1206757. Learning Goals and Pedagogy This lab is designed for middle level General Science or Earth Science classes. The learning goals for this lab are the following: 1) to familiarize students with the anatomy and terminology relating to trilobites; 2) to give students experience identifying morphologic structures on real fossil specimens 3) to highlight major events or trends in the evolutionary history and ecology of the Trilobita; and 4) to expose students to the study of macroevolution in the fossil record using trilobites as a case study. Introduction to the Trilobites The Trilobites are an extinct subphylum of the Arthropoda (the most diverse phylum on earth with nearly a million species described). Arthropoda also contains all fossil and living crustaceans, spiders, and insects as well as several other extinct groups. The trilobites were an extremely important and diverse type of marine invertebrates that lived during the Paleozoic Era. They only lived in the oceans but occurred in all types of marine environments, and ranged in size from less than a centimeter to almost a meter across. They were once one of the most successful of all animal groups and in certain fossil deposits, especially in the Cambrian, Ordovician, and Devonian periods, they are extremely abundant.
