Because Google Maps makes it a bit difficult to enter latitude and longitude coordinates directly, we will first create them in Google Earth, then import these placemarks into Google Maps. Open Google Earth 2. Type or copy/paste the latitude and longitude of the first location into the Google Earth Fly To box and click the Search icon as you see below 3. With Picasa, users are able to add, organize, edit, and share their personal photos, utilizing 1 GB of free space. In order to use Picasa, users need to create a Google Account. Creating a Google Account To create a Google Account, 1. Go to http://www.google.com/. 2. At the top of the screen, select “Gmail”. 3. On the Gmail homepage, click on the right of the screen on the button that is labeled “Create an account”. 4. In order to create an account, you will be asked to fill out information, including choosing a Login name which will serve as your [email protected], as well as a password. After completing all the information, click “I accept. Create my account.” at the bottom of the page. 5. After you successfully fill out all required information, your account will be created. Click on the “Show me my account” button which will direct you to your Gmail homepage. Downloading Picasa To download Picasa, go http://picasa.google.com. 1. Select Download Picasa. 2. Picasa Getting Started Guide Picasa is free photo management software from Google that helps you find, edit and share your photos in seconds. We recommend that you print out this brief overview of Picasa's main features and consult it as you use the program for the first time to learn about new features quickly. Organize Once you start Picasa, it scans your hard drive to find and automatically organize all your photos. Picasa finds the following photo and movie file types: • Photo file types: JPG, GIF, TIF, PSD, PNG, BMP, RAW (including NEF and CRW). GIF and PNG files are not scanned by default, but you can enable them in the Tools > Options dialog. • Movie file types: MPG, AVI, ASF, WMV, MOV. If you are upgrading from an older version of Picasa, you will likely want to keep your existing database, which contains any organization and photo edits you have made. To transfer all this information, simply install Picasa without uninstalling Picasa already on your computer. On your first launch of Picasa you will be prompted to transfer your existing database. After this process is complete, you can uninstall Picasa. Library view Picasa automatically organizes all your photo and movie files into collections of folders inside its main Library view. Double click on the Drawing to open it. 2 Publish to the web Go to File > Publish to the web. Click on Embed. Select the Drawing size. Click Publish. A pop-up box will confirm you want to publish. Using Google Drawings to Create Homework Exercises We show how Google Drive’s Drawings tool can be used to create homework exercises suitable for both online and face-to-face classes. This approach allows students to create graphs actively “from scratch,” similar to the traditional pencil-and-paper approach, with a minimal investment of time and money. This could be a useful active-learning tool for online, blended, and tradi- tional courses. Background Although enrollments in online and blended versions of traditional courses are rising rapid- ly, recent research using randomized trials finds that exam scores for the control group taught in the traditional face-to-face format are higher than for the treatment group taught in the online format (Alpert 2016; Joyce 2015; Figlio 2010). Given the central role that graphs play in economics classes, one potential concern is that students don’t obtain enough practice creat- ing graphs when homework is completed online rather than by hand. Instructors who assign homework online for face-to-face classes may have a similar concern. Increased use of slides, especially when used by students in lieu of note-taking, may also mean that students are less actively engaged with graphs during lectures. Students who rely solely on the provided slides will miss the minimal, but potentially valuable, practice constructing graphs that tradition- al note taking allows, even if the instructor takes care to explain the process of constructing graphs step-by-step. -

Vincent Van Gogh ii Abstract Originating in the theory of distributed computing, the optimistic consistency control method known as Operational Transformation (OT) has been studied by researchers since the late 1980s. Algorithms were devised for managing the concur- rent nature of user actions and for maintaining the consistency of replicated data as changes are introduced by multiple geographically-distributed users in real-time. Web-Based Collaborative Platforms are now essential components of modern orga- nizations, with real-time protocols and standards such as WebSocket enabling the development of online collaboration tools to facilitate information sharing, content creation, document management, audio and video streaming, and communication among team members. Products such as Google Docs have shown that centralized web-based co-editing is now possible in a reliable way, with benefits in user produc- tivity and efficiency. However, as the demand for effective real-time collaboration between team members continues to increase, web applications require new syn- chronization algorithms and architectures to resolve the editing conflicts that may appear when multiple individuals are modifying the same data at the same time. In addition, collaborative applications need to be supported by scalable distributed backend services, as can be achieved with \serverless" technologies.
