by Lauren Gubler CVHS Instrumental Music Presents POPS Concert 5.31.19 | 7:00 PM Good Evening! Few experiences are as captivating as going to Broadway and seeing a live musical, where dancing, singing, acting and stage craft come together to provide a moving experience for the audience. Whether it is seeing Tony and Maria explore the other side of the American dream, or governess Maria keeping kids distracted during the Nazi occupation of Austria, or even seeing a person with social anxiety trying to fit in, musicals have a way of transporting us out of our day-to-day reality and into another world, where wondrous feats of artistry occur. Tonight the Crescenta Valley High School Instrumental Music Program presents a concert filled with songs from musicals. It’s an eclectic collection with songs from classic musicals like The King and I and Porgy and Bess, as well as movie musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, West Side Story and The Wiz. We have music from some modern classics such as Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables, as well as the recent Broadway smash Dear Evan Hansen. Our students have had another exemplary year. We started with the Marching Band placing 4th in their competitive division in CSBC with The Planets, earning numerous High Music, High Auxiliary, and High Percussion awards. Then Concert Band, String Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra all earned Superiors at SCSBOA Regionals during Festival season. In fact, one judge expressed that she had not heard a high school Symphony Orchestra better than ours in her vast years of judging! Our Jazz Band, rebuilding due to a large senior class last year, didn’t skip a beat and ended up earning Superiors at its last few festivals. My hope for you tonight is to enjoy our music and have it inspire you to go out and see live musicals. It’s so important to support live music and the arts! We live so close to many world class venues. Be it the Walt Disney Hall, The Pantages Theater or the Hollywood Bowl, there are many choices for live entertainment in Los Angeles. By being here tonight, you are supporting live music! If you find value in what you hear tonight, please consider making a donation to the Crescenta Valley Instrumental Music Foundation. Proceeds from to- night’s ticket sales go to ASB, and only a percentage of that comes back to the music program, so we could use your support. Thank you for being here tonight and supporting the arts! I had forgotten.” Captain von Trapp - Sound of Music For almost a decade, I have had the honor to be a part of Crescenta Valley High School’s music program. ver those years, I’ve sat in wonder at the talent and hard work put out by the hundreds of musicians Othat have walked through the doors of the music room. Each year brings new and exciting music for both the parents, as well as to the whole community. That is what I’ve grown to love about this program: the sense of family that surrounds the community. upported by a multitude of volunteers, parents, and teachers, we are truly blessed as a music program. In a time when Sthe arts are lacking the funding at the federal and state level, our parents continue to work together to provide for our musicians. The success of the music program depends on the financial support of dedicated parents and our community businesses. We need everyone’s help. The musicians show their appreciation by representing their school and community with pride, tradition and honor. As your Foundation President I encourage you to get involved and stay involved. Whether it is attending a competition or festival, donating food or treats, or joining friends at a dine-out to support the music program, stay involved. Soon we will be celebrating the end of the year and Seniors will be moving on to college. If you are a senior parent, I thank you for the many years of dedication to our program. The music program is a community, a family, and that does not end with graduation. It is beneficial for all to have a community that continues to support the arts in our schools. I want to thank the members of the 2018-19 Board. It has been a pleasure working with you. Thank you to the hard working parents, we could not do this without you. To the students, continue to work hard. You are all so very talented and I am simply amazed by your passion for music and performance. Finally, thank you Mr. Schick, it truly has been a crazy, busy, fun year. Your dedication to your students is unwavering and we appreciate all that you do.
