The line-up comprises six musicals, ranging from shows by a Pulitzer Prize winner, a murder mystery, two musical reviews, and two magical family friendly shows. There is something for every musical theatre lover! Darrell Schulte, Town Hall’s President of the Board of Director’s says, “We are delighted to be bringing you a 36th Season at Town Hall, and are grateful for the support of the community.” Cheryl McNab, Executive Director advises, “Town Hall Art Center has been bringing quality theatre productions to the Littleton community for 36 years. Frank Baum Berkeley, CA (June 5, 2013) – Berkeley Playhouse closes its fifth season with the Tony Award-winning musical THE WIZ. Kimberly Dooley (Lucky Duck, Seussical, The Musical, Once On This Island) directs and choreographs this soulful re-imagining of L. Frank Baum’s family classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, featuring a cast of 46. THE WIZ plays July 13 through August 25 (Press opening: July 13) at the Julia Morgan Theater in Berkeley. There, she learns that the only way she can get home again is to see the magical Wiz in the Emerald City. Along the way, she meets a Scarecrow made of garbage who wants a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a Lion who wants courage, and together they set off down the Yellow Brick Road to seek help from the all-powerful Wiz. This stage classic about the power of believing in yourself features such soul-stirring songs as “Home,” “The Feeling We Once Had,” “If You Believe,” “No Bad News,” and “Ease On Down the Road.” THE WIZ opened on Broadway in 1975 and closed in 1979, after four years and 1,672 performances. -

The South African who wrote the English lyrics for ‘Les Miserables’ talks to Marianne Gray in London HERBERT Kretzmer has very little to be miserable about. Apart from living a fascinating life, which started in Kroonstad then went via Paris and New York to London, he also wrote the English lyrics for Les Miserables, the world’s longest-running musical, which is now coming out as an all-star film. For the film, he has written the lyrics for an additional song, Suddenly, which has been nominated for an Oscar as Best Original Song. We meet in his elegant townhouse in Kensington, London, to talk about the film of the musical which is based on Victor Hugo’s novel set in 19th-century France. The musical has been running worldwide for 27 years, has been seen by 60 million people and shows no signs of flagging. The film stars two Australian leading men —Russell Crowe as the relentless Inspector Javert and Hugh Jackman as the hunted ex convict Jean Valjean — and the gorgeous Anne Hathaway as the hapless Fantine, mother of Cosette, who sells her hair to raise money. Hathaway actually had her beautiful long hair shorn to the scalp during one of the movie’s possibly most emotional sequences. Kretzmer only went on set twice during the shoot. He says he is now a “spare wheel”. “Nobody wants a writer round once his work is done,” he laughs. “He’s just being a tourist.” At 87, and with an OBE (Order of the British Empire), a chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and an honorary doctorate from Rhodes University (which he dropped out of when a student), he still is totally on the ball as he chats, in a soft South African accent, about his extraordinary life. -
Wagner College to Stage Galt Macdermot-Matty Selman Musical 'Goddess Wheel'
March 29, 2012 Wagner College to Stage Galt MacDermot-Matty Selman Musical ‘Goddess Wheel’ By ADAM HETRICK The Lysistrata-inspired musical “Goddess Wheel,” by Tony Award winner Galt MacDermot and Matty Selman, will receive an April staging at Wagner College. “Goddess Wheel,” according to Wagner, “tells the story of the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens. The women, fed up with the war, decide to withhold sex until the men sign a peace treaty bringing the war to an end.” It has music by MacDermot (“Hair,” “Two Gentleman of Verona”) and book and lyrics by Selman, both of whom are Staten Island natives. The musical was first staged at the American Repertory Theater and the Prince Music Theatre under the title “Lysistrata” in 2002. Cherry Jones starred in the central role. NYU’s CAP 21 program also offered a developmental production of “Goddess Wheel” in 2005. Rusty Curcio will direct the production that has musical direction by James Higgins. The band for “Goddess Wheel” will be MacDermot’s New Pulse Jazz Band. Performances run April 18-29. The cast will include Danielle Dallacco as Lysistrata; Leighann Colin as Penelope/Persephone; Ilana Bolotsky as Young Widow; Tara Kirk and Ashley Burger as Women of Sparta; Caroline LaTorre, Heather Kirschenbauer and Erica Weiderlight as Goddesses; Matt Sydney as the Chancellor; Ryan Cole as the Spartan Envoy/Soldier Ghost; and Andrew Khouri and Matt Favetta as Men of Athens. Few experiences are as captivating as going to Broadway and seeing a live musical, where dancing, singing, acting and stage craft come together to provide a moving experience for the audience. Whether it is seeing Tony and Maria explore the other side of the American dream, or governess Maria keeping kids distracted during the Nazi occupation of Austria, or even seeing a person with social anxiety trying to fit in, musicals have a way of transporting us out of our day-to-day reality and into another world, where wondrous feats of artistry occur. Tonight the Crescenta Valley High School Instrumental Music Program presents a concert filled with songs from musicals. It’s an eclectic collection with songs from classic musicals like The King and I and Porgy and Bess, as well as movie musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, West Side Story and The Wiz. We have music from some modern classics such as Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables, as well as the recent Broadway smash Dear Evan Hansen. Our students have had another exemplary year. We started with the Marching Band placing 4th in their competitive division in CSBC with The Planets, earning numerous High Music, High Auxiliary, and High Percussion awards. Then Concert Band, String Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra all earned Superiors at SCSBOA Regionals during Festival season. In fact, one judge expressed that she had not heard a high school Symphony Orchestra better than ours in her vast years of judging! Our Jazz Band, rebuilding due to a large senior class last year, didn’t skip a beat and ended up earning Superiors at its last few festivals. -
