One of the few succulents that call Asia its natural habitat, it’s able to survive winters under snow down to -40° C. This succulent’s leaves range slightly in colour, blue or green tinted in grey, and form petite rosettes. Elegant stolons reach for viable pockets in rocks, cracks, and crevices, and fill out a pot in just a season or two. Densely-packed, budding spires grow from the centre of the rosettes and bloom with pink and/or white flowers. CARE TIPS Chinese Dunce Cap lives in a continuously life and death cycle. Throughout the growing season, the main rosette sprouts stolons which grow small rosette on the ends. By the time the pups have rooted and grown large enough to survive on their own, the main rosette will soon begin blooming. As a monocarpic succulent, the rosette will die after blooming, but the pups live on and sprout their own stolons of pups. LIGHT: Orostachys aren’t as tolerant to direct sun and heat as other genera. Light sun, semi shade, to 50% shade is a comfortable range. WATER: Allow the soil to dry out between watering from spring to autumn, and reduce during winter dormancy. SOIL: Orostachys prefer a well-draining gravelly soil mix. They are also adaptable to both nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor soils. PLANTING: As a versatile succulent, 15 cm pots or bowls with holes for drainage, or a shaded spot in the garden as long as it is cooler with good air circulation are all options. It does not thrive in hot, humid areas such as glasshouses. FERTILISER: Fertilise when the plant begins looking lackluster, or slows in growth, using a diluted fertiliser. BLOOMING: Chinese Dunce Cap is a monocarpic plant, each rosette blooms once and then dies. Flower spikes grow from rosette centres in autumn. DORMANCY: Dormant in winter, Orostachys lose many of their larger leaves and protect themselves by tightening to a fraction of the size during the growing season. PROPAGATION: Chinese Dunce Cap produces many pups on the ends of stolons. Pups can be divided and repotted in spring. They will bounce back to life in spring and summer. The flower rosettes are small compared to most aeoniums, and consist of thick and fleshy oval shaped or a trowel shaped leaves. The young leaves look similar to the leaves of genus Sedum. The leaves are sticky and are initially green, but soon form red stripes on them. Its inflorescence is a little bundle of small, golden yellow flowers. Aeonium sedifolium grows in full sun or partial shade on eroded volcanic soil. The plant is native to western Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the islands of La Palma and La Gomera. The leaves are light blue with faint pink tips The main rosette grows to approximately 8 cm in diameter and produces an abundance of chicks forming clumps of small rosettes. Echeveria Halbingeri requires full sun/part shade. This plant can burn in the hottest, sunny days of summer and will benefit from protection from the afternoon sun. Though often seen as solitary, it will offset to form a good size clump over time. In spring the bright yellow flowers tip multiple unbranched reddish stems that bend over with the weight of the flowers. How to grow and maintain Echeveria pulidonis (Pulido’s Echeveria): Light: It thrives best in full sun to light shade. In indoor an east or west-facing window where they receive four to six hours of sunlight is ideal. Soil: It grows well in a well-drained succulent mix, with an ideal pH around 6.0 (slightly acidic) or an equal part sharp sand with all-purpose potting mix. Water: Water Echeveria plant regularly during the summer and spring. keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. You can allow the topsoil to become slightly dry between each watering. Reduce water in the winter. Temperature: It prefers an average summer temperature of 65ºF / 18ºC – 70ºF / 21ºC. In winter, cool to 50ºF / 10ºC. Fertilizer: Fertilize with a controlled-release fertilizer at the beginning of the season or weekly with a weak liquid solution. Use a balanced 20-20-20 fertilizer at 1/4 strength on mature plants, and a fertilizer with less nitrogen on young plants. Re-potting: Re-pot as needed, preferably during the warm season. To re-pot, a succulent, make sure the soil is dry before re-potting, then gently remove the pot. Knock away the old soil from the roots, making sure to remove any rotted or dead roots in the process. Treat any cuts with a fungicide. Place the plant in its new pot and backfill with potting soil, spreading the roots out as you re-pot. Leave the plant dry for a week or so, then begin to water lightly to reduce the risk of root rot. To propagate a leaf cutting, place the individual leaf in a succulent or cacti mix and cover the dish until the new plant sprouts.
